    Has there ever been an ending to a show more infuriating, more intriguing, more talked about? And talk about it, Sopranos fans do, with discussions always taking place as to what actually happened in the final scene. Was it just an unorthodox time to end the scene, was it a showcase of Tony’s constant paranoia, or was Tony killed in that moment? If he was murdered, who killed him? The members only guy? Well if he did, then who was that? Who was he working for, and why was Tony killed? So many questions, so little answers, but according to the creator of The Sopranos, David Chase, the answers are all there. Today I wanted to discuss a clue in the series related to Eugene.
    The Sopranos ending explained.

    It still amazes me how ppl think Tony lives.
    We were looking through his eyes or pov everytime it showed the door. When the guy goes by in the members only coat, he goes in the bathroom gets his gun out, comes out.
    Tony looks up to the door again, [now every other time he looked up the camera swaps to Tonys POV. Which is the front door. Thats his eye sight] So it still goes to his POV but its black because he just got his brains blown out.

    • @misterbuttersworth9904
      @misterbuttersworth9904 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      Exactly! The key is the door chime that goes off which signals Tony’s POV. At the end is the only time we hear the door chime from Meadow entering and Tony never sees her because he takes a bullet to the cranium

    • @louetemi3604
      @louetemi3604 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      The door chiming is important. Tony looks up every time the bell rings, with the last time being AJ and the members only guy. The director then shows the restaurant full of people, showing Tony has let his guard down, unlike him. His last door ring is Meadow, who comes in just in touch to watch her Dad get clipped.

    Tony's death is actually foreshadowed in the fith episode
    When Tony takes Medow to college, the only reason the guy who is in witness possession doesn't kill him is because he is with his daughter Medow. Aka his guardian angel
    Again, when Tony is shot Medow is the voice that brings him back
    In the last episode Medow can't park and thus can't be there in time and Tony is shot from a 3 o'clock angle

    The ending leads back to Patsy. The only person who would know where Tony and the family were going to be that would behind Tony's whacking because Meadow and Patsy's son were engaged. Don't forget that Patsy held a grudge and originally wanted to kill him because of his twin brother's death.

    • @dagtiqueg
      @dagtiqueg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      That was the biggest question for me: who could have known Tony would be there? It's _possible_ Patsy could have known via his son who'd have known via Meadow, though nothing that's shown directly confirms this. But your contention that Patsy is the _only_ one who could have known is compelling, because I can't think of anyone else who would have..

Even Tony, in response to Carmela saying "I don't like this", writes it off, "come on, who is she gonna tell?"

      @ryanschlanser1657 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      And Butchie's motivation btw, would be payback for executing Phil infront of his family, a huge no-no in the mafia. Likely why they specifically targeted Tony when he was out with his family. He was not in hiding at the time after all, would not have been hard to find by himself

    For me Tony was killed by The Members Only jacket guy, hence the title of the episode. My thought is for years we watched the show and "heard" and "saw" everything. We always watched Tony Soprano. In the last scene we watched what Tony was seeing. David Chase never filmed from Tonys vision before, only from ours. That fact ties in what Bobby said, "You probably never hear it coming + everything goes black" . That explains the fade to black, Tony himself went dark. Therefore dead! .

    There’s a breakdown which is excellent and explains the entire scene…the door chime is the key
    It rings when Tony walks in and after he sits down; whenever the door chimes, we see Tony’s reaction to it and then TONYs POV of what he is seeing; happens for everyone that walks in….
    At then end, meadow is running up to the front door, the door chimes, Tony looks up and we never see his POV because he gets taken out and never see Meadow walk in….
    Brilliant Direction for the finale and something never done so creatively…
    Chase didn’t give a crap about what the viewers wanted and you have to respect that…that why we never knew if the Russian guy in the Pine Barrens lived or died because he felt that not everything in Life is explained and wrapped up nicely

    If I had a chance to ask David Chase a question it would be this: if David Chase, while scripting the series finale had a crystal ball and knew James Gandolfini would pass away, would he have killed Tony Soprano in the finale? I think the ambiguity of the finale arose from all the chatter about a potential Sopranos movie during that last season. I think it was Chases intent to allude to Tony’s assassination while at the same time affording him the ability to get a film green lit.

So much more could’ve been developed, and in a year or two they could’ve did a final six taking Tony (played by Michael) into the late 80’s tying in close to the timeline (late 90’s) where the Sopranos began.

    My take on the ending was: Tony does get killed at the end - it is the logical conclusion to his character and to the series... however they did it the way they did, with the fade to black and not actually showing him getting killed, to leave questions in case some studio came at them with a big wheelbarrow full of cash to make a The Sopranos movie and they still needed Tony alive for those.

    Guys, come on. Mr. David Chase was already foreshadowing HOW Tony Soprano would be murdered, as far back as season 3. Tony S comes out of a diner, with "diner" at the 3 o'clock position relative to Tony's head. Christofer Multisanti comes back from the dead and says "3 o'clock". This ALL foreshadowed the final scene of the series.
    Fast-forward to the series end: When the man in the members only jacket whacks Tony, he comes out of the men's room right into the... you guessed it... 3 o'clock position, next to Tony's head. Not to mention, in the final episode, TS told his sister Janet that he was "minutes away". Double meaning: minutes away distance-wise, but also minutes away from death. In the same episode, he, TS, stood next to the van with "On Ice" printed on the van exterior. Right next to his head, in the 3 o'clock position. The camera settled in for a second or two, just so all the viewers could see this. "On ice" is slang meaning "corpse".
    Conclusion: Tony Soprano was executed by the man in the Members Only jacket, who shot from the 3 o'clock position. Case closed.
    But there is more evidence! When TS walked into the diner at the end of the final episode, there were 3 red tail lights reflected onto him from cars in the street. These symbolize the 3 times he was shot. First, by the two black dude assassins in season 2 (?) These black dudes were referenced by two black men who walked into the diner at the end of the series finale. One of these men even holds his fingers kind of like a gun, to foreshadow the shooting to come.
    The second red tail light symbolizes the shooting of TS by Jr. Soprano.
    The thrid red light is on Tony's head, foreshadowing and symbolizing the kill shot of the assassin that was to come only minutes later.
    As Mr. Chase said, it is ALL there. ALL of it.

    A point of observation: Not only just Eugene, but several "hired" hitmen are often seen wearing a members only jacket throughout the series. Lou Galina, for one (and really just the most fresh in my head after rewatching,) is seen wearing one. I love the idea that his death marks our death as the witnesses of the world through his eyes. It’s a nice existential moment to contemplate. Does his consciousness turn into our consciousness and is he for us what we were for him in that show?
    Do the audience reactions symbolize where he goes or what his reaction would be. People were really pissed off, dumbfounded, and upset. They called cable operators in some cases to see if their service was interrupted. In that interpretation Tony is in hell or purgatory
    People eventually moved on to watch something else which could also represent reincarnation into the next life or getting out of purgatory.
    Ultimately we and Tony, don’t get to know the answers or get to see what really happens because our time on that earth is done and like they said in Goodfellas (Chase’s main inspiration for the show) “had it been wiseguys, I wouldn’t have heard a thing. I would’ve been dead”.
    Very cool to experience it from that angle
    I guess the real question is do we accept death and move on or fight it and become ghosts haunting the scene

    Eugene is just a clue that he dies. The answer is actually really obvious as to what's going on. Yes Tony is murdered and it is the members only jacket guy. He would be at low-ranking made man probably getting a promotion following this. But the reality is pretty simple. Honestly it was Butchy all along. I would be willing to bet you money that Butchy egged Coco on to threaten Meadow. He was there when Tony beat Coco. He was the one who undermined Little Carmine's attempt to broker peace between Tony and Phil following the Coco incident. He was the one that convinced Phil to go to war. After the death of Tony's lieutenants oh, he was the one that set Phil up, or at least gave his permission. He set the girl Rihanna to date AJ in order to spy on Tony. Before you say he would never have relied on her I guarantee you that was not her first report. From the moment she started being with the family he knew Tony's whereabouts at all times even when Tony thought it was completely Secret. All we had to do was pick and choose which time. I guarantee you yet also verified her information multiple times prior to that incident. If that had fallen through they would have just picked another time. With Phil and Tony out of the way and the New Jersey leadership out of the picture Butchie effectively became they had a both of those families. There is a solid chance the girl Rihanna did not last week following the death of Tony. She would have known too much and likely would have been found dead of a drug overdose. Meadow and Carmella likely would have lived, however if it looked at all like AJ was going to seek revenge he would have been taken out. But yes it was Butchy all along.

So probably either a gun in there, or he went into there to get the gun ready. But because of the role he set for himself he has to play by the rules and use a made man. That being said you are right and he could use anyone. If he felt it wouldn't hurt his image he would use a street punk and then get rid of him later (see what I believe happened to Rihanna).

      Meadow being delayed because of her bad parallel parking is one of the main reasons I think Tony was killed. Because she wasn't there, his "3 o'clock" was exposed. I've always felt that David Chase intentionally delayed her so as to clue us in on the fact that he was indeed killed.

    The one who killed Tony, was Eugene's brother, but he acted on orders
    from little Carmine, who acted on orders from the heads of the other New York families.
    They gathered, spoke, and came to the decision that Tony must be taken out, for Phil's death.

    So I never watched the series until just recently and have just finished the final episode. That being said it is my belief that Tony got whacked from behind as he was stepping into the restaurant and this entire scene is just his subconscious.
    I also believe that Paulie either did the deed or ordered or arranged the hit. Paulie has always had connections to the New York Families and has betrayed Tony to them in the past. He also has to recognize with Bobby and Christoper dead Sil on a coma, and the other capo missing , likely flipped, that what remains of the New Jersey family cannot survive and will be a target for mob gangs of non Italians, so he aligns himself with A New York family who will be in a better position to eliminate Carlo.

    I think the three of them get killed. If the hitman used a silencer, the family might be the only witnesses with a clear description of the otherwise indistinctive guy. The number three shows up a lot. When Tony enters, we see 3 bright hanging lights behind him (one might be a reflection, but a clear one). There are 3 boy scouts. Carmela, uncomfortable, adjusts herself 3 times. The man is served 3 creamers. When the table is shown from the perspective of the shooter there are exactly 3 wall lights seen. Meadow's license plate starts with a 3 followed by a (triple 3) 9, and she gets the parking right on the 3rd try. When Tony flips through the songs the word magic appears 3 times. 3 onion rings, a food with a hole, are consumed.

    I think the man in the Members Only jacket was a plot device created by the writers to build tension before the fade to black. I don’t believe he had anything to do with Tony’s death. Other theories of involvement by specific characters are minimally plausible. I believe Tony had a heart attack.

    I love these video analyses of the ending. To add another point to your Tony vs Teddy foreshadowing. Notice during the close up of Tony @ 3:44, Tony has a chipped, misaligned right front tooth. At 6:09 you can see that Teddy also has a chipped right front tooth. I know the actors are actual human beings, and I'm not trying to highlight the physical impairments, but being they are actors, the HBO production would have had thousands of actors to choose from to portray Teddy. It does seem more than a coincidence they selected a Teddy actor that was caucasian, heavyset, AND had a chipped front tooth from all their casting options if they did not intend to link Teddy to Tony.

    The scene where Eugene kills the guy in the restaurant is extremely unrealistic. The mob almost never kills people that owe them money, at least not first beating them to within an inch of his life so that Teddy would not be smiling and reaching out to shake Eugene's hand but shitting in his pants huddled in a corner.

    • @dondajulah4168
      @dondajulah4168 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poeticriffraff umm, the mob doesn’t “ask” people for money. They make it clear what the consequences will be when you don’t pay. They might give you a light beating as a first warning which might require a short hospital stay. During that time, they may mention where your kids go to school or where your wife works as another threat mechanism. The second warning will be one which required a lengthy hospital stay and some kind of permanent disability or disfigurement. At that point, you are not going to be smiling and extending your hand to anyone that you have not met before. You will be in a state of permanent PTSD. Even then, the mob probably won’t kill you because it achieves NOTHING that a life altering beating does not achieve while carrying almost ZERO risk compared to killing someone in a public place. Only time the mob is going to kill someone in front of witnesses is if it is too difficult to take the target somewhere isolated. It is just plain stupid business practice to go from being late on a loan payment to murder. That is not how it works when collecting money out on the street. The mob has been doing this for a while and understand you cannot collect from a dead person and that there is ALWAYS a way to get someone to pay their debt. How do you think they got some black guy to assassinate Joe Columbo? Do you think he was thinking he was going to get away after he pulled the trigger? The mob will have you rob or be a front person for a fraud or take a fall for a crime to repay your debt . A murder in a public place always carries a high level of risk and the cops will always devote resources to solve that kind of crime. You beat a guy within an inch of his life and there is surprising almost no police interest in solving that crime relative to a murder and the consequences are much less severe. And that is assuming that the victim is cooperative with LE which would be extremely unlikely

    • @dondajulah4168
      @dondajulah4168 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poeticriffraff go back and watch the first episode of the show as a perfect demonstration of how the mob handles people that do not pay back their debts. And that guy was bragging to people about not paying his debts which is about the worst thing you can do. Tony broke his kneecaps and then had him defraud his employer to pay off the money he owed. Also look at Richie handling Beansie by putting him in a wheelchair. He did NOT kill him because it was more effective symbolically to have people see Beansie rolling in his wheelchair to enhance his rep as a rough guy. Also, Beansie would not testify to anything. If he is dead, the cops are forced into conducting a full investigation which would likely lead to a murder indictment t for Richie and all kinds of headaches for Tony and his family. Murder is a tool reserved for persons that represent threats to the business or specific violations where murder as a solution is a rule. It is not a tool used to solve common everyday problems like civilians being a few payments behind or even refusing to acknowledge a debt.
