Oh John! Hard to believe I survived 27 minutes of watching somebody else fish the blitz. Those moments are so special. Love your very careful treatment of the fish. Thanks for a great time!
What an epic day, and no one else there fishing!!! Those are the days that memories are made to last a life time.
If you see someone fishing one of those rods you can walk up and say, "Hey, give me my rod back, I know it's mine because it's got my name on it!"
And the lure too 😂
Yeah, guy'd be standing there with nothing wondering what just happened.@@user-zl9je5il4v
What!!!!😂 my names they r call sticky rice mahhh
I don’t know how, but you must have eyes on the water 24/7. That was incredible , and I noticed that lately you’ve been sharing a little more detail and tips in your videos, much appreciated. Thanks.
That's so awesome to see. What a feeling to be fishing a blitz . Gotta love it ! Great video as always John .
Insane that the fish are coming right up to your feet. Incredible footage John.
awesome! ive never witnessed a blitz in person. i hope to someday. i have never even caught that many fish in 1 outing. amazing. if i can ever obtain even 1/8 of the knowledge you have john, id be happy. id give an awful lot to fish with you someday. i dont even care if i fish - id just watch and be happy learning. just to see how you approach it all, decide where to fish, when to fish... its simply amazing.
Pretty good fish swims right by your feet at 3:09 👍🏻
One of your best videos Skinner! I thought the fish would shut down when the boat moved in but it actually pushed the fish right to you. Amazing video. And thank you for releasing your Stripers. We have so few here in Virginia now they should put a moratorium on them in the Chesapeake Bay.
Nice! Thanks for sharing so much info about the gear you use, your books, etc
Nothing short of amazing. Excellent vid. Congratulations!
Amazing! That was truly EPIC.
One for the record books, John. Awesome video.
Awesome fishing!!! Thanks for the video and for sharing.
spectacular footage of the frenzy 👌
one of your wildest ever, thanks. you don't see that every day.
Also appreciate the tips and pointers as always .
Thanks for some incredible footage! I'm surprised there weren't more bluefish mixed in, though.
The little drop out in volume was you no doubt using a few bad words at the boater who put the fish down lol. Nice video John!
Hi Rich!
Crazy action John
Awesome footage John!
It's like the mullet runs here in Florida. Killing blues and mackerel.
Awesome video bro
Awesome man, the kind of thing that dreams are made of...
Hey I live in the S.F. bay area. Not a lot of old school bucktail fisherman here. Swimsuits and jerkbait on casting gear. We fish a lot of muddy water. I do like watching your channel.
it's been that kind of fall. fish are here one minute and gone the next. better than last year, nothing like '21. still not a ton of smalls in the rivers and that's troublesome.
Awesome day man enjoy it while it lasts!!!!!😅👍👍👍🎣🐟🐟
I was just thinking if there were some good quality blitz videos!
Fantastic John! I bet you’re gonna miss that when you’re back down in FL!
Such a cool POV to see a striper blitz like that at your feet all day! Most of us will only dream of seeing a school swarming like that in person. Great video as usual, John!
It just doesn't get any better than that!
Wow that was aweseom...must have been a blast
Wow nice lots of birds fish on 🐟🎣
The beauty of nature
Dream fishing footage. I've yet to witness this in the 20+ years I've lived on Long Island. I heard it used to be more common. Someday soon, I hope.
Don’t get your hopes up. Jersey and VA guys are absolutely decimating these fish.
How so?
John you can throw a beer can out there a catch them lol they look like blues busting and you have the hole beach to yourself it looks like 👍
Whats kind of neat here is how the bucktail stands out in this scenario despite loads of bait around, I think do to its size. In an identical scenario on menhaden (peanut sized), I have found its not as easy with the bucktail to 'stand-out' like it did here. Seems like a balance of 'how far to I want to blend in with the bait' vs. 'stand out enough to be seen and eaten'. What are your thoughts Skinner?
Fishing dreams are made of this...
Nice video good 👍
Loved it! Subbed.
Welcome aboard!
Great video!! When you cast into a school feeding , how far past the fish do you try to cast?
There is hope! Here in NC we have the pin fish blitz. Things have changed a bit and not sure why :(
Epic blitzing...I'm hoping those fish are on their way to Western Suffolk cause we haven't seen much action like that at all on the North Shore here. When was this video made John?
I try to find my biggest profile fishing lure, a 6 inch darter in brown or green. Even white does really good
Totally insane
I guess you were looking for Albie's and the Bass were a bonus and you were the only one on the Beach.
Beautiful day, great beach and I love the sound of the waves on the the small rocks. The fishing was ok too haha would love to have a day like that. How do you keep from getting wind knots in your braided line? I went to a fishing store to get a rod and reel to do the same kind of fishing and they gave me braided line. I had so much trouble with it I went back to mono.
I've found the key to avoiding knots in braid is to avoid letting the line go slack. When I cast I hold my index finger just off the spool as the lure is touching down. Just before it hits the water I stop the line with my finger. When you start winding make sure you have a curve in the rod to keep it under tension. I use mono for 90% of my fishing but for this kind of lure fishing braid gives you a huge advantage. I'd recommend giving it another try.
A 6/0 bare hook would work.. days like that are fantastic... but I prefer quiet with the odd lunker .
Today I went out and got skunked, I came back home to this
If ever there was a time for the fly rod!
Hi John. I know you live by the bucktail, but I wonder how a Crippled Herring would work. It is very similar to a Bay Anchovy in size and shape.
I'm not John, but the appropriate size and color jig would certainly work, the old adage "Match the Hatch" always applies.
Hi John, first of all nice 👍 video and good catch. Do you have any video series about bucktail , how to use and retrieve. Thanks
www.saltstrong.com/skinner/ has my course on it.
Town beach. McCabe's goldsmiths inlet Kenny's all good
Hey Mr Skinner, I’m brand new to the fall run and I have a question. I’ll be fishing the surf at island beach state park in NJ starting this upcoming weekend to thanksgiving. What time of day do the Stripers bite? Is the bite throughout the day or in the morning/afternoon? And how would one find stripers if they’re not hitting the top of the water? Thank you if you see this!
I'm not Mr. Skinner but would suggest topwater, poppers and Spooks at dawn, even as the sun is coming up, to locate fish, then again sunset and even into the night with dark swimmers and bucktail jigs. They seem to be on the feed at those hopurs and less skittish. Of course blitzes like these can occur at any time when the fish are on schools of bait. If you have a 4x4, can you get a permit to drive on the beach? Makes chasing schools a lot easier.
Well, that was cool to watch, but I never realized what poor fighters stripers are. Those fish don't take any line at all, you just crank 'em in.
that is every angler's dream🤣
Why do you prefer a bail less reel? I have never used bail less. just curious. Enjoy your videos
what day was this? I was fishing a mile or so west of Plum a couple days last week and didn't see any stripers. Uggh.
Hi John - I was out there over the past two weeks and hit three days of these blitzes from the shore, two of which were during that high NW wind. My original plan was to target albies, but they were few and far between. Are these blitzes unusual on the Sound and for how long do you think they might continue? Are you still due for an influx of albies or was this just an off year for them?
I think we'll have good fishing on the onshore winds. I'm still confident on the albies.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Many thanks, John!
Oooh Man this is tough to watch after just getting off the water nothing lol, had perfect conditions after work, very over cast, lots of bait, and fishing a really nice rip and nothing, I usually fish into the night but it was too slow. they have been comin in waves where I’ve been fishing on the south shore and there either there or there not, on the bright side when they have been there they’ve almost all been in the slot or above
This is northshore
@renchen5977 Yes I know bud I never said this wasn’t the north shore I was just sharing my experience on the south shore lol
Just One more cast!
REBEL Crawdad
I noticed about at the 3:10 mark there was something big that swam in front of him right after he hooked up to a fish.
Fishing the bucktail
I paused at one point and counted 38 fish in one frame...that looked like so much fun..Are silversides the same as bay anchovies?
No, but they look similar.
Do you ever keep a keeper striper for the table or are they sacred ?!
The clear water up there is impressive, as well as the number of fish from shore. I'm in lower Cape May county on the Delaware Bay side and you don't see anything like that down here. Why don't you keep striped bass, just don't like the way they taste?
Because we're all watching them disappear. The numbers are drastically getting worse every year. There's barely any spawns, and we as anglers need to do as much as possible to preserve what's left
BLITZ!
I was into a blitz further north last week, a couple guys were hitting them on teasers, I got a few on SS sinking poppers and a small cruiser. I could get them to eat on the bucktail, or the teaser for that matter. They liked the cruiser best.
Giant blitzes.
Does time of day matter less during the fall?
IPP You've got all the time in the world! NICE anyway.
In New Zealand we call that a boil up😂
Cool! It's a "blitz" here.
She thing happen yesterday in Orient. Its feeding time.
Would you say that these fish are the target range for the 8 footer and when there's slot to over slot fish that it's time for the 9 footer?
This rod would be no problem with larger fish.
Hello John I’m from Long Island and I moved to Florida what part of Florida you live in I been following you yrs I use to fish in Hampton and jones beach I live in spring hills I always wanted to go fishing. With you
Just reach in and grab one 😅
Those are great eating fish you are casually letting go.
We have white bass down here nobody eats em
This is at Salton Sea right?
And the Ding Dongs in the Boat park right on top of them.....
Where are you at, is this beach somewhere in Marin county CA ?
LI, NY.
Have you ever hooked a gull? Unintentionally, I mean
Wow! Did any of the fish actually bump your legs? Must be twenty years ago or more and that happened to me just West of Nissy. Looks like all your fish were right around slot size with a few bigger fish? Hard to tell sometimes with camera angle and all. Anyway very nice! Saw another comment about you "rushing" to unhook your fish. Haters gonna hate. I thought all were good and clean releases...
John, did you ever try making your own strips with pork skin and kosher salt? I've been doing it for years. 20 strips for four dollars 😊
Nope. Sounds pretty economical.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing An older friend of mine who has passed away used to fish the Breezy Point jetty and showed me how to do it 40 years ago.
@michaeloshea3090 Please tell us.. jig strips work pretty good, but nothing beats pork in my opinion.
@@JamesP29 I agree!
@@michaeloshea3090do you recommend that spot? my fishing buddy moved to queens so mountauk trips aren’t as easy to pull off but he’s been telling me good stuff about breezy
Only John Skinner, lol.
John, during an anchovy bite do you ever fish a naked bucktail? For instance when the fish pushed out a bit instead of upping the size, maybe just eliminate the trailer? I’ve had success with it during peanut bites due to the slight profile change. Just curious if you e tried and the success. Thanks
this looks like the north fork
Where in Long Island is that the water is so clean?
Roughly east of Mattituck depending on time of year and weather conditions.
we're gonna have to start calling him the fish whisperer 😎
What's the latest you 've seen albies there?
11/15, but I went to Florida the next day so they might have stayed later.
Why it’s so easy!
Where are you in this video LONG ISLAND? North Shore oyster bay
Yes. Long Island.
I know this area, ask Steve from Wego
Saw this one time. Caught more seagulls than fish.
Right. They can make it challenging.
What state or country is this? Thanks.
NY,USA
Did you ever have a video when you didn't catch anything?
If this is the north shore what’s mtk like
They are in Montauk! I was there this past Saturday on my cc and ran into a blitz just like this about 1 mile off the beach in the early afternoon, they come close to the beach when the stripers chase the bait into the coves you will see this. Its a blast..
what state is this?
NY
Where is this?
Eastern LI, NY
Almost impossible nit to catch fish under these conditions.
