Stumbled on your channel and I just want to say that I am so proud of you. I resonate with your story. I'll be 8 months alcohol free in a couple of weeks and I wish I had documented how much money I've saved etc. Excited to be with you in your journey. I had trouble with sleep myself. I had to sip herbal bed time teas to help me to rest and deep breathing exercises also helped.

Do you feel pressure from people around you in social situations to drink, or do you find that most people are supportive? I think I’m very close to quitting altogether but it’s something that worries me as I have a lot of people in my friend circle and family that like to drink. Also well done 👏 💪

What an amazing video i have felt the absolute 100% same for the last few years but finally have gone sober as a new year resolution. I thought it was just me. Sometimes the anxiety and worry about what you have said or how you have embarrassed yourself leads to more drinking and you realise it wasn’t that bad but now I’ve just made it worse. A constant stress. Thank you so much Alex! You have just confirmed everything for me and you are a role model to the younger generation. Subscribed! Ps. Please can you keep us updated on your sober journey?

I saw your insta post about this a few days ago and it made so much sense. I am suffering today after being so drunk last night, had black outs, argued and cried. My day has been ruined, head is banging and I'm back in work tomorrow and will probably feel just as bad. I have watched this video and have decided to join you in your sober journey. Thank you for the inspiration x

As a 21 year old who doesn't drink and hasn't done throughout my life (apart from having worked through sips of different alcohols to try them), this one resonates. I often get lots of questions why - and it's simply because I don't like the taste but deeper down, I've seen alcoholism affect so many people through my life and I want to be in control of my life and decisions - it doesn't make me any less "fun". It does get a little isolating because I always found I wasn't invited out like everyone else but thankfully, since starting my paramedic training almost 3 years ago, I've had nothing but acceptance and love. Do whatever is best tor you Alex, whatever helps you to love the beauty of life💗

proud of everyone on the sober journey. i’ve never drank alcohol and never been interested, helps that i’m Muslim and it’s discouraged in our faith- due to all the reasons Alex and so many in the comments have said they found as negatives.
i often feel quite sad when i’ve been around others who are drunk or hungover and see them be not their best self or the way their body language and anxiety changes. it’s sad because i wish they could see themselves and know there’s so many other ways to be social, be happy, be confident and have fun without alcohol.
i’m 28 and have had amazing moments and experiences without the help of alcohol (despite having other barriers like mental health and health conditions) and that’s not because i’m any better or special- it’s just because it IS POSSIBLE. so possible.
please don’t let society’s obsession with alcohol make you feel like you have to partake- you don’t. it’s not legal because it’s good for you, it’s legal because it’s lines the pockets of many who do not care about you.

So nice to see you again Alex. I don't drink alcohol - in my early twenties I had a medical condition and the doctor advised me not to drink alcohol until the condition cleared up. It opened my eyes to a lot of things. I would go to parties and being sober I would see people slurring and staggering around - I was embarrassed for them. I would go out and still have fun without drinking anything. When the condition was gone I realized I didn't need it in my life.

I drink every day. Mainly a glass of wine with dinner or sometimes a beer. Nothing heavy at all. However, whenever I go through a stressful time or feel depressed, I do then drink a lot more. I’m finally aware I use it as a coping mechanism and absolutely go through phases of heavy drinking. The idea of stopping is a little scary to me, so, in a way, I think that’s a reason I should stop. Or at least have long absences. This video helped! Thanks

Thank you so much for opening up this conversation online and for younger people. I'm 26 and have done around 300 days sober. People ask the obvious question of 'why did i stop drinking' and there are multiple answers to this question. There were a few things with friends that I found quite tricky to navigate as whenever we would hang out, everyone would get quite boozy and I'd feel pretty left out, it's fair enough but also didn't make me feel great about this decision (I have a bit more of a tendency to take drinking too far so it's less of a choice for me). Maybe you could do a video for drinkers on how to support their sober friends as I think a lot of people don't even think about it.

Im 32 and reached a year sober on 18th December - the best thing I’ve ever done. I think a common myth is that problem drinking is black and white,it absolutely isn’t I think most people are in that grey area in between as I was myself, but for me if drinking effects you in any negative way then you are still a ‘problem’ drinker, you don’t need a ‘rock bottom’ moment. The changes were slow but as I got more and more into it and gained momentum they come thick and fast,my skin,my digestion,my mood,my ability at work even my parenting. It helped to see alcohol for what it actually is,willpower will only last so long and you are setting yourselves up to fail if you still see alcohol as this positive super social party essential, see it for what it is - a poisonous chemical responsible for a lot of evil in the world,a life wrecker,if it was discovered today it would be declared unfit for human consumption, you’ll soon be *glad* you aren’t drinking it and won’t need willpower. With all the money I saved I bought a gym membership for my local club, has sauna, steam etc I’ve been able to get back into running, the indirect benefits of becoming AF are endless. Life changing.

I originally stopped drinking with the idea of just taking a break but now I see no valid reason or benefit of starting again. Today is my birthday and I never ever would have believed I’d be sober on my birthday! But I am focused on reaching 100 days in Jan. I am sleeping better, thinking more clearly, I am a better mum, more patient and generally just a nicer person. Keep going! It’s a challenging journey but sooooo worth it 😊

Well done for taking a stand and hopefully helping others to see alcohol is a crutch to something more important .

It’s my birthday today and I’ve had my first sober birthday and absolutely loved it! Gorgeous meal and off for Sunday lunch today. I’m the same as you in that I’m not alcohol dependent but the pros outweighs the cons in terms of sobriety. Looking forward to following your journey x

Sober here too! I’m 38 and grew up with alcoholic father. I never ever wanted to end up like that. I noticed that alcohol only ever made me either feel sick or more anxious the days after. So I cut it out completely before it ever became a problem. It’s expensive and a known depressant. It baffles me that it’s such a big part of our culture.

Good luck with your journey!!! There are so many good non-alcoholic substitutes now that taste as good as any standard beer or wine. I really resonated with the being “present” comment. I took at hiatus from drinking for a few months and it was very good for my health , productiveness and my happiness overall. Unfortunately there’s too much of a social stigma around not drinking. That was the worst apart about not drinking the socialising element. Eventually people do get used to your lifestyle choices and adapt. ❤

I work in the alcohol and drugs recovery field. I don’t drink. Regardless of whether you give up for health benefits or you have an alcohol misuse disorder, I haven’t met anyone who becomes sober and doesn’t report back at how much better life becomes without alcohol. What I have found with folks who aren’t problem drinkers is they drank socially every week and just thought all the symptoms they were experiencing was part of getting older and when they stopped realised it was the after effects of their drinking. They wish they’d done it sooner!

Hi Alex, So good to see you again.
I absolutely agree with you, what you’re doing is amazing and I applaud you for it. I used to drink occasionally in my younger days only to be sociable, but honestly I’ve never liked the taste of it. I also know and seen what alcoholism does to people and their loved ones.
Personally I think a person can have a very enjoyable time out and still have fun without the drink and hangover that goes with it.
Look forward to your future videos to see your updates. Take care x

I’ve just watched this video and decided to go sober after a Christmas / new year spent with me getting very drunk at family occasions and embarrassing my partner and children. When I think about my past, all my regrets have been after I’ve had a drink. I am not very confident, so I drink in social situations to try to fit in and be liked. Unfortunately, once I start drinking I don’t stop until it ends up with either me getting upset, doing embarrassing things or arguing with my partner. Enough is enough as I’ve got too much to lose if I carry on.

A had my last drink 10 months ago. I woke up with that ‘never drinking again’ hangover that stuck. From the age of 15-25, I was a binge drinker. Upon evaluation it was damaging my health, relationships with my family, friends and girlfriend and was living life with lots of drunken regrets, both things I had said and did. My decision to quit came spontaneously, and I couldn’t be happier. The first few events that you attend where you would have been drinking are strange, certainly in the first 3 months. But after having every weekend since quitting being hangover free, being in a better overall mood, knowing my health has improved, got leaner, took more control of my life, improved more at sports and hobbies, actually gained social confidence (as I’m no longer reliant on liquid courage), feeling more present, improved skin and hair quality, saved lots of £, reduced blood pressure, increased longevity, quitting social smoking/vaping and MANY other benefits there is certainly no going back to drinking alcohol.

    Chin up mate
Keep it up, and just keep moving in a positive direction
Just be careful, I have found that it is always an ongoing process…it’s not just in the difficult times that we may desire old lifestyles and ways of coping. I have found when the new sober lifestyle becomes more “normal,” and the enthusiasm / energy required settles down on a personal level, and the need to justify the step runs out of steam, there is a creep to rejoin the culture of drinking
It’s easy to look back but keep moving forward!

I quit because of Lyme disease and it’s been a blessing in disguise, really don’t miss it. Even with a health condition people get upset if you don’t drink. Seems a pretty perfect thing to cut out your life and combat the cost of living crisis too. I think it says a lot about how we’ve set up our society to do jobs we dislike and drink around them to numb the discontent.

Jan 17th will be 6 month sober for me. I didn't hit rock bottom either, just decided to go sober as a lifestyle change. The biggest challenge I've faced is people asking me "WHY?!" non stop at social events. I don't need to explain myself. Coming up with a short and concise answer will help you out. I go with the "Oh its sober (enter month here)" and people seem to let that go.

I am 21, I never drunk much when I was 16, I might have had the odd can of something but I never took to drinking and going down the local beech getting smashed. This has opened up my eyes and got me thinking, your right!!!!!! I have woke up after a night drinking and felt anxious. I have been a major sufferer of anxiety so that doesn't exactly create a good mix. But yup I have woke up after feeling incredibly anxious. I have forgotten the night and what was said. I have gone to a nightclub and woke up with a mad hangover, ended up at a McDonald's at 4am spending way to much money and eating at that time is just a no lets face it. You have opened up my eyes with your video and I might have to give some serious consideration as to whether I will keep on drinking. Aside from the after affects, alcohol is expensive and you often drink more than you should, you will gain weight aswell and in particular for me being incredibly overweight to the tune of 100lb or so it really isn't a good mix. My weight is an issue all un to itself but I struggle to care about myself almost collectively. I care about my weight but I don't care or respect myself to do anything about it. Maybe a change for me which your doing swell obviously is to just quit the drink. I have found myself drinking out of upset and depression and so maybe I should really be quitting it whilst im ahead

Good to hear from you again.
Sounds like a good decision to give up alcohol and you look well on it.
I used to drink like a fish in my student days and all through my twenties as I never suffered from hangovers but then I hit 30, got married and had kids and had my first ever hangover and OMG that was not great when you have 2 young toddlers jumping on you first thing in the morning so I started to only have the occasional drink now and then and I've continued like that ever since. Am 60 now and can go for weeks or months without having anything to drink at all. I do occasionally have a drink but just have one or two and that's it, I can take it or leave it and never crave a drink.
It is a choice and you have chosen well.
I hate the way people drink in this country, thinking they have to get bladdered to have a good time. I used to have a house in France for 10 years and I never saw anyone drunk over there as they drink in moderation and usually with food. It is frowned upon to become drunk over there as they have a healthy attitude towards alcohol and drink it in moderation.

I've been sober for 2 years now - and despite it still being uncomfortable at times, it's the best decision I've ever made. For me, it was always a huge social buffer and used to be something I could easily hide within when times get tough. For most, it is a case of moderation - truly I do think that. It can be something that most can moderate with some careful attention. BUT if you are even questioning going sober give it a go. Set out your whys. Buddy up with someone. It could be the change that can help you to open doors you didn't even know could open. Don't normally comment on videos but best of luck to everyone!

Great to see you back Alex. I'm glad that you are making a decision based on what's right for you. I didn't start drinking until 20 years old, and it was only an occasional cider, i'm 29 now, and i must admit i drink more now, usually Prosecco or a GNT, never mix my drinks, i do want to cut back to be honest, my older sister is an Alcoholic with Bipolar, and it scares me to think i could end up the same.
Luckily i've never had a hangover.. but i am hoping i can reduce my intake.

  • @MrBanks2024
    @MrBanks2024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good luck with it.
One word of advice - make sure you find alternative ways to socialize. The pull to drink is often actually the pull to see friends. Perhaps play piano out for your family.
When it comes to sleep my ex partner (with ADHD) would have problems sleeping and use alcohol to sleep. Sleeping without any support DID NOT WORK. But what did work was, say, beach noises or very gentle music - white noise. I think in the way stimulant medication can help people with ADHD calm because it helps then concentrate on a low level rather than have their mind shooting everywhere, some very low level stimulation helps your thoughts from going everywhere when you hit the sack. Instead you just focus on the soothing niceness. For the same reason I find meditation sends me to sleep rather than just lying there with no control over my thoughts whatsoever.
And you're right. IT SHOULDN'T BE A BIG DEAL. People can consume the legal drugs they want, or not. Lots of people don't like coffee, no one cares.
To be fair I just don't let it be a big deal. I tell people I don't drink loads, if I go out I'll get cokes and call them vodka cokes a lot, that kind of thing. As it is you pick up on their energy and they won't even notice.

Wow, I absolutely love this video and am in a very similar position so am happy I stumbled across it. I’d love to see one focused on sleep as I feel like my life is being held hostage with the lack of sleep I get, which is of course my fault for the bad habits I can’t get out of.

I'm 30 and watched Huberman on alcohol where he says it has no nutritional value, sugar is better as an energy source, the effects of it are essentially just your mind being poisoned, and the mood highs are inevitably balanced out by lows. It was non-judgemental but he logically broke down. Now I just don't want to anymore. I'm not essentially teetotal but I am not far off I go weeks and weeks with nothing and just have the odd drink here and there. Most I've had in months was 3 bottles of beer. That was mainly because my company was calling me the drinks police and I was just making a point I'm not trying to forbid.
This wasn't all there was to it I was already cutting down just naturally trying to keep things together.
I remember 15 years ago I stopped eating meat and everyone acted like it was a thing now no one cares. And the food alternatives are so much better. People will find much better ways to have fun and unwind.
An ex partner of mine had ADHD and was getting drunk regularly. Ruined our relationship. It seems obvious it needed to cut down a lot but it is hard with everyone pressuring you and the impulsive and promise of fun.
Good to see someone else speaking up about it.

So this could be seen as the ‘worst’ year for me to quit, but I see it as giving myself a huge present!!

I’m not strictly sober as it were. But I don’t drink and never like feeling drunk. And I would feel drunk very quickly. So I always volunteered to drive my friends around. Great excuse. Now I’m nearly 60 and can’t remember when I last drank anything alcoholic.
What I do instead is subscribe to The Wise Bartender. A monthly subscription box of non alcoholic drinks. It’s great. There is so much more available than Seedlip. The boxes come with one major mixer type distilled bottle, a couple of beers or perhaps a cider and mixers. Sometimes alcohol free cocktails. I really enjoy experimenting with them and it feels like I’m having a party.
