@@belfastwhatsapp similar to my son, who is now 22. Mental health services are very bad indeed. Try to stay strong, and let those that are able to be there for you give their help and support. Also, look into charities near you that often offer counselling. Contact Mind, the mental health charity, who will be able to point you in the right direction. Speak to your GP too. I hope you are able to get the help you need so you can be well again very soon.

@@belfastwhatsapp CBT can be great for helping with the day to day symptoms, but it doesn't really do anything to help with the cause of the symptoms. If you think about the cause of your problems, whether abuse of any kind, bullying, family mental ill health, or outside psychological influence on you, then I am sure you will find a charity who have trained psychotherapists working with them that would be able to offer you proper counselling. 💙

Sadly school taught us nothing to set us up for adult life. They should be teaching how to handle our emotions, our responsibility to others in society, how to motivate ourselves, how to budget so we can manage our expenses, the consequences of debt, work life balance and a whole lot more useful tools to manage life. I wanted to share that sometimes this loss happens also even when someone is still alive- and its never talked about and should be..i grew up severely neglected and abused from day 1 onwards by a single mother whom has DID and is very narcissistic and a gaslighter. Life was about surviving, never living. Since i had my kids ive been diagnosed with autism( which i could have done with support with as a child) and complex ptsd and dissociative seizures due to my trauma. 7 years ago i felt the need to separate my life from that of my mother in order to begin to mentally heal..tried contact last year but alas mother is too narcissistic so last month i made the incredibly hard decision to completely break all further contact with her forever. I need my strength as i raise and homeschool my two autistic children. Somehow knowing she is still alive keeps the severe pain and loss alive..there's no 'closure ' as usual loss has. Its so sore it hurts in my chest. But im sharing cause no one talks about this scenario..and yet it happens to many ..How to navigate having to let go? Im still struggling to accept it. Any tips or experiences you have please make a video..it may benefit many. Take care you are doing sooo well.😀

Oh Alex I am so sorry for you and your family’s loss, so utterly devastating for you all. Grief is so physical aswell as emotional and mental, I lost my mum in 2006. She had always struggled with her mental health but she was badly suffering with COPD and it had run her so incredibly low she just couldn’t do it anymore. Talking about them keeps them here ❤️ and relevant in every part of your life. Photos and video can be so hard and testing on your emotions but part of grief therapy is watching and going through it all .....when you’re ready too, acknowledging those memories. I didn’t have any video or phone messages, I so wished I had. I do hope with time you feel stronger, feel the love and support that’s here for you and your cause is a fantastic worthy legacy for your brother🌟

Keep doing everything you do. You are incredible and help so many people. When i struggled with my mental health in my early teens I reached out and got help and today I went and got my university ID and I start my lectures on Monday to become an Operating department practitioner.
You motivated me to keep strong and to persue a career in the NHS.
You don't need to thank us as we all love you and want you to be okay and want your family to be given time to grieve and think of all the amazing memories you have with your amazing brother. Sending love always ❤❤

I am sending so much love to you and your family. I can’t ever understand the unimaginable pain of losing someone to mental health. I have suffered myself with mental health and that toolkit you’re working on for schools and universities sounds like an amazing resource. My school (although over 5 years ago now) never spoke about mental health at all. I didn’t know what depression or anxiety actually was and I had no idea about different charities or resources that were available. If i had been aware of the sort of things out there like I do now it would’ve saved me years of pain.
Your positivity and mindset is a breath of fresh air.

    Hi Dr Alex,
I'm not sure if you have time
to see these messages, but my 15 year old sister Pippa sadly ran out in front of an oncoming train and took her own life it's the worst most heart wrenching experience I've ever had to go through .......there is nothing that can take away this feeling you are feeling now, but please take comfort in these words. Time is a healer, focus on yourself and family! Your brother WOULDN'T want you too feel to feel this way I promise you that......Remember there is no time limit on grief, just please focus on your own mental wellbeing and that way you will be able to help people around you be there best self. Sending you lots of love, positivity and you've got this!!🌻🌻🌻❤❤❤

My son is 16, he’s been suffering from anxiety and depression for over a year now after he suffered bullying in high school. He won’t go to therapy and in the current climate it’s difficult to get any support so I’m helping him myself with self help books I’ve read on anxiety in the past as I too have an anxiety disorder, He’s decided against college because of the children he wants to avoid now he’s finished high school, so we’re supporting his decision and keeping him positive. Once covid is over he said he wants to get an apprenticeship, and I really do hope he achieves that. He’s lost all his friends as they turned to drugs and turned on my son for not wanting to do them. He’s made friends online gaming during covid and he’s so much happier but he’s still not going out much. He will take a morning walk now and again. I’m trying not to push him and just go at his pace.
Sending you my love Alex. I’m so sorry for your loss xxx

It's about time there is change in this world. Mental health is not discussed enough in school, college and life beyond. People are not being educated and as a result the people suffering can often feel like they don't know where to turn. My mental health started in college and there was no support or understanding at this time. This needs to be a priority in this day and age... We need to get this to parliament there needs to be some sort of movement to get this taught in school. I will do anything I can to help with this topic.

Thinking of you and your family Alex.
You’ve shown the world that mental health is a huge issue and should be treated in the same way as any physical health issue.
I suffered from depression earlier this year and thankfully have come out the other side now but found there was still such a stigma surrounding my illness which is so wrong.

Maybe as a podcast episode or something you could speak more about Llyr and his life. Maybe about what he was like and what he enjoyed. His friends, school, hobbies. And on maybe what it’s been like for you and your family following his death and what those first few days/weeks were like. Of course this is personal to your family so no pressure. Yet so often we here these declarations about ‘focus on mental health’ which is good, but very rarely hear about how it can truly affect anyone even if you can’t see it, and what life is like for those around you if something tragic happens.
The TH-cam ‘camandfam’ did a very very eye opening video discussing her husbands suicide recently. Very eye opening but I’m sure helpful to those going through it or dealing with troubling thoughts.

Alex, you are a very brave young man. You have a wonderfully kind soul. Channeling your grief into such a positive thing would make your brother so very proud. My son has ADHD/ASD and struggles quite badly with his mental health. I think it’s imperative that schools can confidently educate our children in mental health and well-being as it is unfortunately sadly lacking. It’s about time the education system became less of a ‘one size fits all’ institution and embrace individual talents, rather than figures and failures. Sending my full support and best wishes to you xx

Thank you for making this video Alex. It is so important to talk about mental health and the impact it can have. My brother took his life in May of this year after a very long struggle with anxiety and depression which had gone on for over 20 years. I take comfort from the fact that he is n longer struggling and is at peace. But there are lessons to be learned: Services are often poorly resourced, forcing professionals to make incredibly hard decision about who does or, more importantly, who doesn't receive support; individuals can all too easily attract labels which ultimately become obstacles to care and support; it can feel like a real battle to try to get people the support that they need and the whole business of 'navigating' the mental health 'system' can be a nightmare, particularly if the individual has no family or where they do, the family does not have the confidence or ability to push for services to respond. At times these difficulties call into question the values of the professionals involved, as far too many people are left with little or no support. I'm hoping that Serious Incident Reviews and an Inquest will help services to learn those lessons and not simply become platitudes. I wish you well in dealing with your own circumstances. I wish you well also with the introduction of your 'tool kit'. Thank you again for putting this out.
