I recently had to solder a very small 8 pin speaker connector. I looked through all my donor boards until I found the only one that had the same 8 pin plastic connector. I perfectly followed what I’ve seen Alex do so many times and used my heat gun on the opposite side of the motherboard and safely removed the plastic connector. And then… I dropped it onto the ground. The entire time I looked for it I kept thinking I bet Alex never drops and loses important components on the floor. It was gone to the 9th dimension, I never found it. So it was comforting to see that even the greats like Alex drop and lose components on the floor too and not just amateurs like myself!

If you listen real close when the connector fell off it hit some metal. I am thinking from what I could see it hit the hot air gun and then took off and I thought I heard a second clink. Maybe it hit the desk or chair legs to ensure it went to the 9th dimension? Really hate when that happens and I wonder if when you are doing a job it might be worth having a camera or cameras setup on the floor. They might catch the entrance to this mysterious dimension?

When I charge any device, my rule is to put it and not touch it until its charged, also when I unplug I hold it nicely and firmly and unplug cable straight so it doesn't twist/bend anything on connector, and it should last for very long time when technique like this is applied. =3

HI ALEX,another great video.IF YOU CAN"T SEE things ,how can you do a good job? That is so true.I help a lot of people fix all different kinds of things.Like cars computers plumbing, grafting plants etc.I'm a jack of all trades and master of none.haha When i try to teach someone how to get a hands on experience with their repair it becomes apparent THEY CANNOT SEE the parts, they are just guessing at what they are touching.IN a effort to make things work they just PUSH HARDER or faster. It's obvious to me they don't have patience or skill.AS you say ,but you CAN learn both. You always tell your audience, how can you fix it if you can't see it ? ,that is so right. But i bet you most of your viewers are good learners judging from the comments.your a good teacher ,keep it going, and thank you ALEX

Although the towers are ok, I cannot stand dell laptops. I've owned many and other brands, but these are no good. I've constantly repaired mine and others. I feel they're cheaply made.
That connector that fell off the board was a 'make-believe' dell component. I believe they're meant to 'poof' when removed.

One of the more enjoyable videos. Even though the ninth dimension grabbed the connector, you got one over on it because it would have been thrown away anyways due to all of the missing through hole pins. IMO that bracket was useless because it did not hold the connector tight enough to the board.

This is a case of where the manufacturer is using some random parts for, I'm sure, cost purposes but the connector is NOT up to the company's standards.
A connector especially for power and USB are always under stress as they receive a large device and there is a lot of stress and strain on them.
I was using a friend's computer one time, an Asus I think, and when I went to plug in the power cord, I felt the inside connector detach from the mother board.
I was not handling it roughly or torquing the power plug at all when it broke.
I can only assume that at some time, it was possibly plugged in and got hit producing strain on the internal connector loosening it from the board but not completely.
And when I got hold of it, I made just enough stress on it to break off.
With the extra added "hold down" bar, it was still not enough to keep it from torquing and breaking off.
Only a built in "foot" on the front on each side would have prevented the connector from becoming loose from the strain.
Like a car defect recall, this should be reported to Dell but then again, they may not care about the resiliency of their cheaper products.
My DELL XPS is going on 6 years now with only one past problem and that was to buy a new power cord. All the rest of the puter is in great shape and still performing.
I even recently gave it a good cleaning and put on new thermal paste on the CPU. Of course I cleaned off the old paste with some 90% isopropyl alcohol.
    Good show!!!

Those USB-C connectors with SMD pads and through pins are a pain. Even with a metal bracket to secure it, it broke. I have seen the same issue with Thinkpad laptops. The thing is, it is going to get worse as laptops start transitioning to USB-C as required by EU laws. The USB-C has too many pins on a small connector, and unless the user is extremely careful, it is going to break soon or later.

    • @ralphj4012
      @ralphj4012 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Concur. It's a shame the people making these laws have no clue regarding how these connectors are used in the real world. They are likely to break when subjected to multiple connect, disconnect cycles. I also question the supposed current-handling capabilities.

@@FantasmaSpartis No, not the same. Although phones use the same USB-C connector, usually people do not move phones while the cable is connected, like they do with laptops. My guess is that manufacturers are not really interested in securing the USB-C connectors to avoid being ripped off.
