More rock musicians can't read musical notation than can read it. Rock is essentially an oral tradition where parts are learned by ear and memorized. At least in that aspect, it qualifies as folk music.

Neil Peart was Julliard trained and Carl Palmer did time in an orchestra, so it does happen. Just not as often as the other way around. Given that Bill Ward was hugely into swing jazz before playing rock, and was a big fan of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa I could believe he could read a drum chart, or that he learned by ear. Either way he's awesome.

It's got something to do with when people sing they tend to make bigger sound that releases more air that in turn makes people stress syllables a lot more and a lot more clearly then their normal speech. This is also the reason some non American singers might sound American when they sing. It's always blown my mind with Ozzy to.

@Trahfk McGhee Speak for yourself. My point is there's a significant increase in the number of garbage artists vs great ones. The ratio is overwhelmingly lopsided, much more than ever before. Of course a few gems will earn their way to the top, but the majority of music today is written by the same song writers, and performed by the most profitable artists, and produced by one of the only 3 major music labels left who control the industry. Universal, Sony, or Warner. Quit drinking the kool-aid.
