@@flyingdutchman773 I think it sounds very "spikey" "high" and "silver", a piano for me is - in comparison - very mellow, smooth and much deeper, more like navy blue up to a baby blue. I really like both instruments tho
If you listen carefully you'll hear dynamic contrasts (if not necessarily vivid ones). CR is playing on an instrument with two manuals, which enables differences of both dynamic level and timbre. But expressiveness is achieved on the harpsichord more by means of ornamentation, phrasing and articulation than dynamics. To appreciate that you have to adjust your hearing away from what we've become used to since the advent of the piano and become attuned to a different set of interpretive practices.
Thanks for the in-depth explanation. I was always enamored with the rhythmic customs of harpsichord performance, i.e. excess rubato and complete liberation of phrasing. It would be interesting to hear the expressive techniques of the harpsichord employed on the piano, in tandem with those of the piano.
The instrument was not restored in 1787... that would mean Mr von Nagel is actually more than 300 years old. I know he looks like an old sage but he's younger than that ;-)
Question de goût.
Very well-played. Too much echo in the recording, however. Totally unnecessary. It greatly interferes with a Clean listening to Bach's music. BTW, who highlights a "Highlighted reply"? TH-cam? I don't understand why a reply as condescending and rude as that of "Fernweh N" would be highlighted by anyone. When a society (such as ours) is in a state of decline, some of the things to go first are rational discourse, civility and respect for others who have a different POV.
I FINALLY FOUND THIS SONG!!! I’ve been looking for it for years now.
This recording is marvelous! What a spirited performance, and the tonal quality of the instrument is superb. (Thank you for posting, Val!)
His playing never ceases to amaze me, and the choice of instruments here is perfect and fabulous. I'd call Rousset the Leonhardt of his time.
The sound of the instrument is brilliant!.. You can met bach in the piano, but his instrument is this, colorful!
A harpsichord always has a golden and warm sound to me. I don't know if other people hear the same thing.

👏👏👏Christoph !!!
I believe it is the sarabande part that is so luscious and soulful. Soo much better on the harpsichord. I get chills -:-)😊❤

why is he playing on the same level of voice?
+Misho Otiashvili You mean dynamics are missing? Well, dynamics are virtually non-existent for harpsichords: they have no pedals like those of pianos.
+VERITS99 no I mean all time is forte.
+VERITS99 and there are no focuses. he plays like a robot, no emotionally.
+Misho Otiashvili >all time is forte< Dynamics include forte, piano, etc. There is no mechanism provided for harpsichords to implement dynamics.
+VERITS99 thats not truth.

Exactly.
This is one of the silliest comments I have ever seen.
