5000m Rowing Machine Test | Edinburgh University

  • Hello TH-camrs! Weclome to another episode where we get to watch some athletes push themselves as hard as they can on the rowing machine! This time it is the 5k rowing machine test. The aim is to cover 5000m as fast as possible. I find this test the hardest out of all the distances, it is very difficult to pace and if you get it wrong it can be a long time being uncomfortable. What is your least favourite erg? Enjoy!

    I’m 59 now and still use the rower for 5k , I’m generally at around 18.45 , steady away these days , I once played golf with Sir Stephen Redgrave and I asked him what his 5k pb was , around 15.30 he said but James Cracknell was faster apparently, 15.15 . Incredible fitness.

    I row privately at home for fun and health. I am not an athlete, not even close to any competition. I just love to row on an erg. I do not test myself, but when I train I can have 18:40 on 5k. It was my best on the day i wanted just to do a workout, but I decided to row it faster than normally. It was not a test, this was just a tough workout. It is no pleasure for me to fall down from the rower after a distance. I just see, that my average pace increases with time. Health and fun - this is my aim.
    Extreme intensities are almost futile for health and fitness. Yes, they have it's place in a workout plans, but they are not anywhere near essential to keep good health and fitness.

    I really like to see that I'm not the only one who is searching for their own limits. One month ago, I finally bought a broken Concept2 E (as I had no money for a new one). I have welded it and bought a PM5 to replace the old PM4. On 2024-01-23, I had my first rowing session (7,517m), and today, after 22 workouts, I have rowed 175,220m. Now I see clearly that a pace time under 2:20 (for a whole 10k) is impossible with my height of 175cm and weight of 113kg, but I really feel the power that comes from rowing, and I hope that this over-motivation will last long.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm curious why you thought that. Did someone tell you this? I've made a few videos talking about the lever, also know as drag factor or resistance.
      The lever controls air resistance on the fan. It is not like putting more weight like a weight stack. It means the higher the leaver the faster the fan will slow down between strokes. Roughly the middle of the scale is close a good mix of keeping the fan going between strokes and also able to feel like you can push every stroke. It is also similar to how water rowing feels too!
