As someone who was raised on a farm, it was a shock to me to see city folks so amazed at the stars. I had no clue city lights blocked the view of stars.
I was 32 when I first saw the night sky in full darkness; went to death valley during a Vegas trip and were driving back in the dark and I couldn't believe it actually looked like those pictures of the night sky with all those stars so visible. Actually, on the way toward back to the city, when the city came into view far ahead of us you could see the light from the city shining up into the sky, it's no wonder people in heavily lit populated areas never see the sky like that.
It's really so sad. I wish I could see it like that all the time.
Me too I was so shocked.... During summer breaks we used to sit in our yard and see the starts and mother use to tell us stories it was so nice
At the beginning of COVID when factories in China shut down, I was able to see a handful of stars from my home in Hong Kong. It was only around 4 or 5, but it blew my mind.

When I went to this beach once, I saw the stars in full image, was such a awesome sight. Might even have topped when I saw Mars for the first time.
I went camping once and got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Seeing the Milky Way for the first time was mind blowing. I stayed up for a hour just looking at it. As a backyard astronomer it was one of my most memorable experiences....
First time i seen milky way was with all of my family on my auntie's country side house at midnight
The overcast cleared, there's no lights in a country side and one time we lifted heads up
Yes, it was majestic, my grandpa talked about which stars were where and we listened and watched.
Apparently, we knew about it next day, that night was extra bright and we could see that - the whole of milky way and beyond was seen, there was so much stars, i couldn't understand at that time
Apart from that night being extra bright, it was also a Meteor shower, and we could also see that - I counted at least 30 meteors falling. I wished for everyone (especially my family) to see this at least one more time
i live in suburban area (class 5) , thanks to my father i know what milky way is , its barely visible here and i never seen it in best sky , one of my hobbies is astronomy (starded before 2 years) i do have two telescopes , before 3 days we were on vacation and there is sky class 4 also i asked father to stop where it is class 3 and its awesome , i dont understand people who dont appreciate dark sky , especaly my father ,who teached me a lot when i was younger (5-7) but now he just ignores everything , like he hates me to be into that (now im 19)
Where i live i can see many stars but nothing like i see on pictures of night sky that are taken near popular observatories
@@abyssstrider2547 actualy you cant see color of milky way you can see just like black white version of picurues if im correct , pictures are usualy taken by long exposure camera this also goes for dso objects that you can see on internet

Well some lights look aesthetically nice. However, seeing the hundreds to millions of stars is unbeatable.

Yeah, I live in a village. I see stars everyday but I only get chance to see bright million stars maybe once a year, because we have meet several conditions, first it must be in dry season. We have dry season between june-september. And the most important thing, power failure for few minutes in the middle of the night. 😅 So the entire village will get really2 dark.

I'm unsure if that's the best idea. Criminals love to do their shady business in the dark and would definitely take advantage of it.
There are millions living in urban centers that have never seen the night sky. It is quite sad, not to mention the animals effected by this.

yeah people who says it effects your health are lying they feel different because there not use to it not because there is some larger health issue and effected by animals yeah o think of the animals as you constantly burn there homes down pollute there land and our lands sounds more like childish whatifism at that point honestly i think its to late to even save earths people 2030 and what will the bread basket of America look like but yet lets ignore the larger issues for these childish minute problems

@@knightmare6619 I remember seeing the 7 star constellation called saptarishi in our local language and also other stars and planets like venus when I was small. But now, only like 2-5 stars are visible and on top of that sky mostly remains cloudy.

In Bali, for once a year, there's a ceremonial day called Nyepi Day (Nyepi means "quiet"). We, the Balinese, turn off any kind of electric device for 24 hours (except for emergency service such as hospital and fire fighter). Also, we spent most of our time in our house. Thus, there are no vehicles passing by the entire streets in Bali. We celebrate Nyepi Day as a day of reflection our life.
During Nyepi Day, we could see the milky way with our naked eyes. There are no light pollution and air pollution. Only a peaceful day

Try to put small Red LED - Green LED - Blue LED in parallel and a potentiometer.. and rotate that Potentiometer and see for yourself which one turn on first indicating how much power it needed than the other
And Since most white LED need 3 type of them working at near same power usage... They use more power... instead of warmer tone which mostly using RED and GREEN.. they use less power

@@cavemann_ Bright white LEDs do neither, their light is glare inducing and reduces visibility at night. You can't compare efficiency when the new white LEDs don't even do the job that HPS lights did, which is actually improve visibility and safety.
@@EdmontonRails Well my experience is different. LED lights improve visibility and I don't want to see them go.
I'm so in favor of switching to softer lights. As I'm so sick of seeing bright ass leds on vehicles at night.
Have you ever been in a car during the nigth in rural areas you can't see shit even with those ligths, we can't just solve this problem, is due to the properties of ligth itself, however I acknowledge that in cities we can reduce car ligth we already have street ligths we don't need more
@@tesmat1243 I have I live in bumbfuck nowhere mn where dial up is considered fast internet still and I can see just fine with my yellow halogen lights at 12am. Yall just need to drive the speed limit, not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and pay the fuck attention to the road directly infront of your vehicle.
I've been able to slow down enough or stop complete every time a deer or some other Animal has jumped out at me.

@@corrsali on any weather impaired days you are legally allowed to slow down aswell as incouraged to slow down so you can have enough stopping distance, when the occasion arises. Also mist, fog, snow and heavy rain glare back any sort of bright light. That's why you are not supposed to use your brights in those situations. I refer back to my previous comment. Leds are not needed on vehicles.
Why do cars even need their lights on in cities, literally everything is already lit.
There is no experience like being out in the middle of nowhere and staring into that cosmic sea.
Everything melts away, leaving just you and the stars.
It's so sad ppl nowadays have never seen a clear nightsky with stars or meteor showers bc of light pollution and most don't even bother to care.

@@avancedonia Would be still nice. I love the night sky and enjoy seeing the stars outside, but I have never been able to see the milky way and the stars in all of their glory. The night is my time for inner peace and I would love to see nature beauty at night not restricted by light pollution

I miss when various stars can be seen in my town. It was more than a decade ago. Now only Sirius and the Moon can be seen at night along with some skyglow...

Really I've never been into really big city. Are the night views really limited to just Sirius? The nigh might be so dull. Because here in my small city I can still see Orion, Cetus and other constellation quite clearly
@@anonymousstout4759 I could see Orion during end years, but that's only visible constellation left. The light pollution is big that even during blackouts, there will still be that skyglow all over the place.

I was once in a car accident. The first thing I noticed was how calm the Forest was and how beautiful the Milky Way is. I never saw it again.
Everybody who has a telescope and tried to see deep sky objects knows this well.
When you have been out to a darker place, returning to your town in the middle of the night is like getting from clear into dirty water.
TRUE! I saw the orion nebula from bortle 5. Then from bortle 3 i think and it was like seeing different objects!

This is my first time actually hearing about the negative effects, but I have always absolutely HATED lights at night. My family hates me because I have to completely black out all artificial light in my house. What’s weird is the moon does not bother me at all

Same i sleep better in the dark too. But i still try to have the Moon light in my room if possible to still be able to see what's happening. But yes, when you're in the dark with close eyes, you can indeed sense source light lol
The fkin what, you guys have lights on in your home at night? WHAT? My entire family switches lights, phones, TVs etc off when going to sleep. Never thought such light-in-the-night loving people existed until now.
just find a really good sleeping mask. if can't, you can try making your own, which covers forehead and sides of the nose which usually are the problematic areas. idk why the forehead, i mean we humans are not cicadas and don't have those light sensors it seems, but the "third eye area" definitely can sense some light. and on the sides of the nose there's usually a gap so some light gets through. another thing why so light sensitive, is that many people are night owls and also don't get enough movement to get tired and just sleep. some people have other problems, like anxiety. i know one thing - when i'm tired and have a nap during the day, no amount of light bothers me then. but at night..like omg, if someone turns on the light in the next room i can sense it 🤦
@@fishyc43sar Unfortunately, this is absurdly common now. Even if all lights in a home are switched off, more and more appliances have LEDs that stay on all the time, since blue LEDs are so cheap to manufacture.
I live in a more rural area, Sadly my neighbors all think they need to have lights on outside 24/7 for security purposes. It's not one home, it's 90% of them. So I moved from the big city to a much more rural area and the light pollution is just about as bad.

All bullshit. Most break ins occur during the day when people are at work. So they mindlessly install spotlights. Point them down on your property. Not pointing out. Light trespass is a common reason for police complaints.

Yes, in Dubai there are barely stars to see. I love star gazing but u can't see much in Dubai. In my hometown, you can see the constellations. The big dipper was just right up there if I look up from our house

I notice the night sky getting brighter and brighter every single year and finally i found this video. It is a concern of mine for years.. bc it looks scary
I once thought my suburban neighbourhood was bad with light pollution, I could see a scattering of stars but they were slightly faint and I’ve never seen the milky way in my life. But when I visited a relative in London I was so surprised to see that the night sky was perpetually lit up by the city and you could not see a single star. I wish so deeply to live in a rural area just so I can see the Milky Way just once.
I suppose you don't need to live in a rural area to see the milky way, just head somewhere far from any city or any light sources and, well, look up
Only time I saw the Milky Way in full glory was when we camped on a beach at the coast. Tried to do that again and it was too close to town.
You cant see the milky way in rural areas, the light pollution is so bad it carries over and covers it up even in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, I fucking hate cities for many reasons, but this one just seals the deal, we've been trying to bring attention to this issue for decades but now all of a sudden its an issue because it affects city folks aesthetic... light pollution literally physically harms the environment and wild animals.... city people don't give a shit about anyone around you, "fuck the neighbors, I do whats best for me and screw them over" that doesn't fly in rural areas, you do whats best for everybody, and the sociopaths who only care about themselves go away and move to cities.
I’m going to be honest, I didn’t even know this light pollution problem existed. I’ve never heard anyone talking about this and how this was even a thing. I greatly appreciate this video, and I definitely agree. I haven’t seen the stars in so long, and literally my city never sleeps.

as someone who is afraid of the dark but is thoroughly captivated by the night sky, the amount of times ive wished for atleast a district wide (where i live) blackout is astonishing. like fr star gazing makes me forget all my worries for a while. its like a simultaneous out of body and grounding experience.

I remember looking up at the night sky when visiting my home village in Bangladesh the first time after being raised in the UK.
I was utterly shocked, I was 12 years old, the stars looked like grains of sand that has been thrown and scattered. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and felt like I was dreaming.
Lived their for two years then returned to London.
It felt like I was robbed of all the stars that supposed to be part of my night wonder.
Ugh, this just made me crave seeing the stars even more than I already was 😭 and the only time i was able to was when i wa on holiday and I was so amazed and intranced
This is why wanna move tk the countryside. Nothing can compare to seeing the stars and being able to just walk without any kind of artificial light when there's full moon.

Short storytime:
Some time ago, I went to Gwadar. It's a beautiful place in Pakistan and that's where my dad works. We went to a beautiful beach there, and at night it was stunning. I saw so many stars there that I had never seen in my whole life. I even saw my first ever constellation there- Ursa Major! A couple months ago, I went back (really excited to see the stars). Unfortunatley, I saw nothing. The sky was clear, no clouds, but there was a weird light tinge in the sky, caused by light pollution. When I came back to the city, things got worse. I had to drop my hobby of star gazing, since everywhere I went, it was too bright :(
Hawaii has really good sky viewing! Not in Oahu though with Honolulu, but The Big Island has some pretty views.

We have 24 hours a day brightness during summertime and almost no sun light during wintertime here in Helsinki Finland. Yet i never heard about the problems with too much light. The lack of light like we have in winter time, yes, it is a problem, when it is always a night time and a bit of slight gloomy brightness for a few hours during the day.
Still, that’s what the ecosystem in that part of the world got used to and adapted to. I doubt that animals or plants like 24-hour brightness in parts of the world where it should be dark during the night.
@Jo Mama animals and plants do care, ever notice how plants in cities don't thrive for that long and always have to artificially and manually be replaced by the city's gardener? It's cause of the light pollution at night. Like what the video said pollinators such as bees and moths are always killed due to led light which reduces pollination. It also affect the trees which causes them to wither and loose leaves due to the artificial light during night time

This is so sad. I remember when my family first moved into the house we live in now we could see the stars because there weren’t very many stores near my house, we lived on “the outskirts” of town and now we can’t see them because they’ve built so much around us…
I belong to a remote village in Assam, India but due to my father's job I never had to really live in my village. They have no street lights, no proper roads and there aren't much vehicles moving around either.
So, this one time when we visited our village my father took me for a night walk. I was quite annoyed because I didn't want to step on mud or worst, cow dung.... but you gotta trust me on this we didn't need any light at all! The moon light was all we needed. I could clearly see the road. Not to mention, the sky that looked extremely beautiful and magical.
I'm not sure if I'm ever going to experience that again though :( I guess we really are ruining nature in the name of ‘development'.
I'm a mariner. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the night sky in the middle of the Ocean for the first time in my life. So many stars, our galaxy looks like a cloud of silver dust. I've been going sea for 10 years now. I still fancy that view.
The philosophical implications of a starless night sky must be huge. We have literally wrapped ourselves in a blanket of darkness, losing our connection to nature, wonder and the universe. Pushing us to a more human centric view of life, it's a sad reality.
As someone who's worked in Film, Television and Theatre, I've often wondered why outdoor lighting doesn't employ even the most basic mechanism to control control light pollution: the barndoor.
Honestly, urban planners would benefit from hiring a few gaffers and cinematographers when making policy and designing urban spaces.

It's a flap that surrounds a light source, controlling the focus of the light.
You see it behind the scenes for film from the lights with the square screens on the side.
Funny enough, the suggested use for barnlight for street lights was suggested decades ago but for some reason, still not implemented despite being extremely affordable and energy saving design

I can't believe there are places you can't see the stars, thats unimaginable to me. In the winter I love taking walks after dark and just look up, or take a yoga mat with me and just find a quiet place to lie down and watch the stars. If you've never seen the stars, I hope you will!
On clear winter nights in the mountains where there are no lights around for hours, the starlight and moonlight are so bright that everything glows with a subtle hue. The moon and stars can be bright enough to cast shadows.
I spent my childhood till high school in the countryside. So during that time I get to see the night sky in all its glory. I made a makeshift telescope from a broken binoculars. I can definitely say it was such an experience.
I enjoy the stars so not seeing them would be like losing one of my eyes
To me, nothing is more disappointing than when I'm camping in the countryside and at night I can see the bright halo of light caused by the city in the distance. :(
I wrote a letter to the city I live near once about light pollution. About a year later, they switched the streetlights to smaller ones that point down, and now a lot more stars are visible. Not the Milky Way, but it's a start.
My highschool dorm is near the top of a montain. I can never forget the scenery i saw whenever i go stargazing..
Seeing the night sky with little to no light pollution is breathtaking. The few planets and stars I can see in the city don’t hold a candle to the galaxies I see with the naked eye in rural areas.
The thing about India is so true, as। Kid in late 2000s I saw the sky clearly from my village the morning star too sometime, but now from the same village nothing more then stars are visible, in the city area like delhi, you can literally play a game to spot the stars
I remember going camping with my family every summer. Everytime I went to go use the restroom late at night, I'd look up and see the milky way and I had a sense of wonder and amazement at how beautiful the night sky really was.

I miss the night sky stars in Somalia when I used to live we used to see millions stars at night time we used to have the natural lighting sky of stars and the moon. I remember when the moon goes full moon I used to love it now I been living in the UK London for the last 11/12 years and I have never seen full moon or night sky once. I took so many things for granted when I used to live in Somalia, morning sounds of birds and sound of chicken, I miss less noise and less lights, natural warm sunny weather with tropical, clear sky during the day with no air pollution. I love London but lately with all these researches I am doing, light pollution, sound pollution and air pollution it’s not good for me to live here anymore even tho there are life time opportunities here but my healthier life is more important than money

I grew up in a small desert community and grew up with amazing star scapes and sunrises & sunset. I remember the first night after moving to Houston and the sky never darkened. It turned an illuminated purple....

I was lucky enough to have been brought up in a rural enough place that it had close to 0 light pollution. It was very very little. And you could see the milky way even on the clearest of nights. As I grew older I gained a great appreciation for what I had. Sadly that was short lived and I now live near folks. Towns and nightclubs and the M4. There are no stars here and its sad to see what people miss out on. Not to mention the taste of the air over here. Nothing is fresh about the air around here.
I only saw the night sky in its full glory one time and I can't help but feel everyone in the world would be a little bit happier and calmer if they could regularly see it.
nothing beats like seeing a cloudless full moon lighting everything around you almost like daytime and when there is new moon a lot of stars appear, i used to live in a small town with no light pollution.
I've literally thought about this for so long. That most street lamps and such should turn off during night, at least for a few hours. Almost nobody is out then, its not worth it for the safety imo

I have a family in Rotorua, New Zealand. I decided to pay them a visit in 2020. On the way from the Auckland airport to Rotorua, my uncle stopped the car so we could take a look at the star-laden sky. It was incredible. I'd never forget how beautiful it was. I don't have pictures of it because even though I do have a nice camera, you need skills and special equipments to capture the stars in a photograph. Still, I don't regret coming to New Zealand shortly before the p*ndemic hit (went there in January 2020). I live in a large city with heavy pollution (including light pollution), and I long for stars to be visible on the sky again.
As someone who has the luck of being able to see the sky without city lights at least once a year I'm so sad for who never experienced it, I really hope everyone gets to see it cause it's so beautiful!
Every year in Bali, there’s a traditional special day called ‘nyepi’ (being in silence) and for a whole day, people shouldn’t make any loud noises or turn on any lights outside. Sure, as long as you keep your window closed and taped with black cloth, u can still turn on the light at night, but the light shouldn’t seep outside. There’s a group of enforcers that goes around making sure everyone is quiet and it’s dark everywhere. If u go to ur garden at night during nyepi, the sky is freaking incredible.

I can look outside right now and see a slight amount of light. Bud when I’m at my cabin with limited light pollution. I always have to go out and lay on the dock and watch the stars. It’s still amazes me seeing shooting starts.

5:30 thats why i turn on blue light filter on my Samsung Galaxy at night a couple hours before bedtime.
I have the blue light filter on my phone, i recommend using it (if ur phone/other device has it ofc) at first it looks very weird (very orange -ish color) but in few days you will completly forget about it and your eyes will adapt to it. Its better for your eyes and brain and combined with the lower brightness it saves some battery as well
I do live in Abu dhabi, and we know a deep road, within al Ain road which goes deep, real deep, and even the lights cut out after a good 30KM. scared to go (no people living, no cellular service in a bit, dark, no utility stations just nothing), when we saw the sky we were like "JFC WHAT HOW ARE THERE SO MANY STARS", it looked so beautiful for that moment
For me been growing up in urban city for years, and yes i can confirm I've haven't seeing galaxy or even stars in big city. Because of that i always excited when my dad say "tommorow we go to village" because I finally gotten a seeing of a clear sky with trails of stars scattering around.

This is one of my concerns since I was in high school. My school located in the city, and every night when I was on my way to go home from school/college I was so sick because of the light pollution. Luckily I live in rural area, so I could see the clearer sky with the stars. So, yeah it kinda makes me prefer to live in rural area or maybe countryside.
Whenever my family goes out to the Colorado River about an hour from Yuma, Arizona, looking up at the stars is amazing.

I've always enjoyed looking at the stars, and considering how bad it is in cities, I should be thankful for the few dozen that I can peer at. I've heard that to see the most stars you'd have to go on an ocean cruise.
I have lived in the Montana for about four years and when my cousins came to stay with us one for them just looked up and said “I never seen these stars” I remembered not everyone can see the stars so clearly. It made me kinda sad
We don't need so much artificial lights, in homes, shopping malls, offices . Also too many electronic gadgets, way too many. Electricity will help water conservation.
When I once went camping for about a week I wasn’t the most excited for any of the activities, I was excited to see the Milky Way for the first time. But when I got there even though we were extremely far from any cities, I couldn’t see it. I still haven’t seen the Milky Way in real life to this day

I remember in my primary school, us learning about different stars and I could see them clearly at night but this days I dont even remember seeing any star unless I travel back up country

I can't understand how people aren't bothered by lights at night, I personally sometimes wish I could just turn off the moon.
I get it in age of 7 year 😐 when my teacher ask me how many kinds of pollution which you know? I answer that with " air pollution land pollution Light pollution and forest pollution can my teacher ask me tell me about Light pollution and my answer was I can't see more star in in night sky because of so many lights in in streets .
I remember seeing millions of stars when my cousin and I were biking to the market. There were no lights at all but the sky would illuminate. This was different if you moved to the main island where you see nothing.

Before seeing this video, I use to complain how dark the area I live is. As the area I used to live in , was very bright during the night. But after learning all this I think I appreciate the small amount of lights in my area
As an amateur astrophotographer, I’m blessed that most of my country laids under a bortle 1 and 2 dark sky. My village is a bortle 1, and I hope that it will stay that way forever. A none dark polluted dark sky is certainly one of the most beautiful thing ever.
I’ve been to rural Philippines the night is pitch black, but when you look up you see all the stars it’s insane.
The saddest thing is how many views this video has, i am always alone expressing my pain on this issue, what about the waste of electticity, how about more motion and solar lights and not using them at all during the fuller phases of the moon when the noght sky is bright naturally

I highly doubt people saw the Milky Way during the 1994 blackout. Blackouts have occurred in my home town and I never saw the Milky Way. Maybe it was the night of a new moon and they only saw a part of it?
Expecting cities to get rid of so much light pollution that people will see the Milky Way is... kinda ridiculous, but it's nice to go out in nature and see the stars once in a while. Also, some of the mental and health effects caused by light pollution could just be harmful effects of cities themselves. For example, obviously people in cities have worse diets, so developing cancer would be more likely.
Light pollution can be so simply solved, yet no one ever takes action until it's too late. I think it's going to be so funny whenever all the damage has been done, and we'll be living in a hellhole, and they'll throw the blame around and try to fix it, when, they could've taken action decades if not centuries ago.
My boyfriend is a truck driver and sometimes we drive for miles in the middle of no where and I get to look up at the beautiful stars. There are so many out there, nothing like where I live. There are some more around his house as I live right by a major city and he lives about an hour away from it, but nothing like in the middle of nowhere. My dream is to go to Utah in the middle of the desert to see the stars with as little pollution as possible. Maybe even alaska someday. I hope to experience such a beautiful thing before I perish some day.
