The light switch on the outside of the cell was for the night light so the screws could check on you while you were asleep without waking you up

Shepton Mallet Prison has been used as a filming location for the highly anticipated drama series, 'Beaumont'. The prison is also a popular location for film productions, ranging from small scale productions, music videos and educational productions, through medium scale entertainment and drama, right up to major Hollywood blockbusters. and many offender's were hanged at the prison..

That was a very interesting video matt.
That wasnt any old van Matt. That was what they call a sweatbox. Used for transport of prisoners. I doubt a very nice experience. And they werent fire alarms. They were riot bells. Cool explore.

1860 - prisoner Judge escaped through the 2-foot-wide (0.61 m) tunnel which carried the prison treadwheel shaft to the grain mill on the outside of the prison wall. He was later captured at Shaftesbury.

About the mold, it could already be dead or treated just not cleaned/re-painted yet. Maybe the regulations are more relaxed, it costs them less to rehab the building for 'safety'. I like the sound of that. A little common sense can go a long way for safety, saves a lot of money and headaches for the owners, and more likely we can see these places.

Shepton Mallet became the County Gaol responsible for executions. Between 1889-1926, seven men were convicted of murder and therefore executed within the prison. They were buried within the prison grounds and are still remembered there today.
Prison, do we not all live in one type or another?

The 18 wartime GIs executed at Shepton Mallet prison …
Initially, the remains of American prisoners executed at Shepton Mallet were interred in unmarked graves at "Plot X" in Brookwood

The prison closed in 1930 after decades of declining prison population. The last woman had left in 1918 and only 50 inmates remained.

Why would they close it down it's so clean and looked after. Australia jails like Long bay it's a mess. And they still have people there. Parramatta is close. In bad condition but Long bay is not far from it.
As an ex officer I can tell you they only take locks off simply for security.. every cell door in the uk uses the same key… also them cell doors are anti barricade hence the little bar on the frame
Oh and forgot to add the switches outside cells for light are just for roll call… we would go to cell open hatch and turn light on to make sure they were in there and they had to move or wave so we knew they wasn’t dead
