Years ago I did a work on addictive properties of certain drug group. We were able to cause addiction among all vertebrates and quite some invertebrates, but not insects and other arthropods. And the drug we tested isn't working trought any basic common receptors straight(opioid, adrenaline, serotonine,GABA..)and the effects are caused indirectly trought some less known part of nervous system. To this day is exac mechanism unknown, but can affect seastars, lampreys or us. So I can imagine really wide group of aliens sensitive to some drug. They all would probably have at least some basic neuroreceptor(s) in common and if there does exist convergent evolution, retroviruses, biological similarity among the true alien species:Hutt, Sarlacc, Tusken, Rakata or Space Whales, then there is a change of some similarities in their neurology too. In our exobiology we have of course no idea. But in any case we must count each brain of each member of each species as unique with unique predispositions to the effects of psychofarmacs. All brains are really complex - look at the human brain, and then think that it is not the most complex thing in the star wars universe, there are bigger and far more complex and confusing brains.

I think we often take this for granted how similar all life is, and I really want to make a video one day on how many biologists think that alien life wouldn't be all that different. Of course there are some wild ways it could happen, but the Star Wars or Mass Effect world with so many humanoid shapes and even similar psychological states is reasonable. It's both possible that life from Earth would evolve into something so alien, we will not recognize even it's biochemistry or that alien life can go trought convergent evolution and look like something we know well. It happened on the Earth multiple times (Dolphins and Ichtyosauru have similar shape; mammals or sharks, some reptiles are giving birth and scorpions after are feeding the youngs they gave birth, there are many such examples and many more complex:society, etology, behavior and true real language of some cetaceans is like carbon copy of human - the generation tech will be happy) and is possible the life started multiple times. Many scientists think that human shape and other aspects of our bodies could be really common and basic adaptations for intelligent terrestrial life everywhere. It’s actually weird to me that they chose to make the Pykes the main villain syndicate in BoBF instead of Black Sun. I guess Black Sun was used so heavily in legends that they thought they’re overdone or something, but I would have loved to see them in live action personally.
Yeah I wasn't sure until making this vid, but they are still around in canon at least for a long while, I think into New Republic era. But I agree they probably wanted something new and connected back to clone wars show
I’m guessing it’s because they didn’t want to alter anything from Legends, where as the Pykes weren’t apart of Legends so it gives them a lot more creative freedom.
They might not want to use black sun in case they ever adapt pre-phantom menace stories. In legends, Darth Maul essentially destroyed Black Sun completely a few years before TPM and it never rose to great prominence again after that.
The black sun could be used in a potential season 2. In season 1 boba was only just starting his crime family so it makes sense for him to have a much smaller opponent
I guess Book of Boba Fett just features a subspecies of Pyke, because their heads seem to fill their "helmets" in The Clone Wars, and said helmets have that cobra look to them. It would also explain the chin tubes, maybe the Boba Pykes just have a different form of them, akin to chickens having different combs or Twi-leks (And chickens, again) having different numbers of digits.
The Pykes in the Book of Boba Fett are actually how the Pykes were meant to look based off of their earliest concept art back in 2007, while also suffering from not wanting them to be purely CGI. The clone wars has an almost woodblock design which is why the Pyke’s heads are octagonal instead of bulbous, but the concept art for the Pykes for Solo is closer to what Lucas intended although that didn’t get translated to the film, but you can find it on Wookiepedia on the Pyke’s page and it looks very good. If Star Wars 1313 released we likely would’ve gotten actual good looking live-action Pykes instead of what we got with Solo and the Book of Boba Fett.
Finaly someone is explaining why organic slaves were used in the mines. I used to question why they dont just get a bunch of cheap droids they dont have to feed and stuff for the job. But since they would corrode and break down fastern then slaves die, yeah it finally makes sense to me why they dont waste money on droids for that since they are probably more expensive to buy then slaves.
Perhaps pike face tentacles perform gas exchange via their surface, or have very small holes with a sort of highly complex sinus behind it as a filter?

I hated the way pikes were turned into fish in live action. They really felt like cobras or something when watching the clone wars. It made them more distinctive too because there are so few reptilian species and so many fish ones.
Surprisingly large amount of negative comments here. Metanerdz is easily the best deep lore/deep dive star wars lore channel out here, yet people will always find something to complain about. Guess these people haven't seen any actual 'bad channels that DO use filler to boost watchtime, or repeat content over and over, or use clickbait to get views. Metanerds does none of that. Could you talk about some of the musical shifts that have occurred in the new Disney Star Wars projects? In my opinion it’s a detail most people won’t consciously notice, but it is a huge component to the original success of the original two trilogies. John Williams did an amazing job at making emotionally driving music with easily recognizable Melodie’s that became iconic. Lucas himself even spoke on the fact that Star Wars was meant to be a space opera of sorts… The vast intricacies of the music matched the vast intricacies of the original films.. Now it’s simplistic pop oriented music that lacks emotional depth and easily recognizable character themes....it’s more on par with the Marvel films which similarly lack artful and memorable music. It’s copy and paste. I personally feel it lowers the potency of the stories, and strays from the original spirit of the films. Try to remember one melody from the Disney films … Check out the soundtrack to empire strikes back and then compare it to Solo, Rogue One, The Mandolorian, or Book of Boba…

Tarkin's Star Cruiser being named the carrion spike is cute. Carrion being rotting flesh seems to work as a metaphor for his contempt for a rotting galaxy and his "just" action or tool used to cleanse it.

I made the assumption that the pikes have multiple forms. like the people of geonosis and trade federation there would be many different variations of there people ether determined through regional differences or casts like servants, worker, soldiers ,etc
Very interesting Star Wars lore video about one of the unique types of alien races. As for a pseudo explanation of the appearance of the tubular appendages on the live action Pikes, my theory is that they could be similar to their species' breathing appendages that are inserted into the tubes on their face plates since, similar to the Duros and Muun species, don't seem to appear to have visible nose slits.
The drugs both for treatment and as psychoactive recreation work much better and without such side effects as any other doctor of medicine would tell you. Especially psychofarmacology is quite hard in practical applications, and anything can cause anything or nothing as its effects. I can imagine maybe Bacta to have some applications across so many species. Skin is common orgán with highly similar properties or at least is there something like skin.

I'm very curious on what these criminal empires are like in the sequel era. Is Boba the dominate force? Does Crimson Dawn even exist anymore? How powerful are the Pykes, Black Sun, and the Hutts? I hope we get these answers some day.
I don't know about Boba's empire, but while groups like the Hutts, Pykes, Black Sun and Crimson Dawn still existed during the sequel era, their power and influence has since dwindled. Instead, newer organizations have supplanted them, like the Guavian Death Gang, Kanjiklub, Droid Gotra, Son-tuul Pride, and Red Key Raiders.

Very disappointed with the live action look of the Pykes. Yes it would have probably cost an absolute fortune to cgi the tall, spindly look of the animated version into the live show but the makers could have tried to get the look a bit more on par with their animated brethern. The animated Pykes just look so creepy and totally alien. The TV version just looks like a guy in a fish mask

Ah! Haircut! Looks good. I have to say I've found it difficult to watch SW series since Lucas stepped down. Some design choices have been disappointing, and some character's personalities have changed between Legends and Canon, but I really enjoy your reviews on all of the SW lore. We have seen different variations of species in Star Wars before. It’s actually weird to me that they chose to make the Pykes the main villain syndicate in BoBF instead of Black Sun. I guess Black Sun was used so heavily in legends that they thought they’re overdone or something, but I would have loved to see them in live action personally.
Yeah I wasn't sure until making this vid, but they are still around in canon at least for a long while, I think into New Republic era. But I agree they probably wanted something new and connected back to clone wars show
I’m guessing it’s because they didn’t want to alter anything from Legends, where as the Pykes weren’t apart of Legends so it gives them a lot more creative freedom.
Black Sun are more covert while the Pykes are overt?
They might not want to use black sun in case they ever adapt pre-phantom menace stories. In legends, Darth Maul essentially destroyed Black Sun completely a few years before TPM and it never rose to great prominence again after that.
The black sun could be used in a potential season 2. In season 1 boba was only just starting his crime family so it makes sense for him to have a much smaller opponent
I guess Book of Boba Fett just features a subspecies of Pyke, because their heads seem to fill their "helmets" in The Clone Wars, and said helmets have that cobra look to them. It would also explain the chin tubes, maybe the Boba Pykes just have a different form of them, akin to chickens having different combs or Twi-leks (And chickens, again) having different numbers of digits.
The Pykes in the Book of Boba Fett are actually how the Pykes were meant to look based off of their earliest concept art back in 2007, while also suffering from not wanting them to be purely CGI. The clone wars has an almost woodblock design which is why the Pyke’s heads are octagonal instead of bulbous, but the concept art for the Pykes for Solo is closer to what Lucas intended although that didn’t get translated to the film, but you can find it on Wookiepedia on the Pyke’s page and it looks very good. If Star Wars 1313 released we likely would’ve gotten actual good looking live-action Pykes instead of what we got with Solo and the Book of Boba Fett.

In my opinion it’s a detail most people won’t consciously notice, but it is a huge component to the original success of the original two trilogies.
John Williams did an amazing job at making emotionally driving music with easily recognizable Melodie’s that became iconic.
Lucas himself even spoke on the fact that Star Wars was meant to be a space opera of sorts…
The vast intricacies of the music matched the vast intricacies of the original films..
Now it’s simplistic pop oriented music that lacks emotional depth and easily recognizable character themes....it’s more on par with the Marvel films which similarly lack artful and memorable music.
It’s copy and paste.
I personally feel it lowers the potency of the stories, and strays from the original spirit of the films.
Try to remember one melody from the Disney films …

Very interesting Star Wars lore video about one of the unique types of alien races. As for a pseudo explanation of the appearance of the tubular appendages on the live action Pikes, my theory is that they could be similar to their species' breathing appendages that are inserted into the tubes on their face plates since, similar to the Duros and Muun species, don't seem to appear to have visible nose slits.

Especially psychofarmacology is quite hard in practical applications, and anything can cause anything or nothing as its effects. I can imagine maybe Bacta to have some applications across so many species. Skin is common orgán with highly similar properties or at least is there something like skin.

I don't know about Boba's empire, but while groups like the Hutts, Pykes, Black Sun and Crimson Dawn still existed during the sequel era, their power and influence has since dwindled. Very disappointed with the live action look of the Pykes. Yes it would have probably cost an absolute fortune to cgi the tall, spindly look of the animated version into the live show but the makers could have tried to get the look a bit more on par with their animated brethern. The animated Pykes just look so creepy and totally alien. The TV version just looks like a guy in a fish mask

I honestly don't think they're the same species the pikes in the clone wars have three fingers while the book of boba Fett pikes are wearing five finger gloves
That's funny i didn't catch that. I was going to mention that they could just be a subspecies or varient, but that's always true lol and idk it felt lazy going to that again

The people of the Iberian Mountains throwing range weapons (jalvins) at heavily armored French Knights in the Medieval Period were far superior in intelligence than the Pyke Syndicate:
↪Attacking Boba Fett at close range why? The Pyke Syndicate could have hired 50 Elite Snipers with Mandlorian peircing exploding slugs (bullets).
↪The Pyke Syndicate could have used 50 Drones to Drone Strike Boba Fett when he was walking around in the open with his helmet off.
↪The Pyke Syndicate could have had 50 Starships in orbit and when in public Boba Fett takes off his helmet to scratch his nose; open fire on him with 500 Turbo Laser Cannons until there is nothing left of Boba Fett, but glass where Boba once existed if Boba Fett comes back after being hit with 500 Turbo Laser Cannons; then Boba Fett really does have Mandlorian Plot Armor.

Ah! Haircut! Looks good. I have to say I've found it difficult to watch SW series since Lucas stepped down. Some design choices have been disappointing, and some character's personalities have changed between Legends and Canon, but I really enjoy your reviews on all of the SW lore. Really a fantastic find for me in 2020. Keep it up, I really look forward to more.

I like to think the Pykes we see in Book of Boba Fett and the ones in The Clone Wars are two races of the species. This really isn't that new to Star Wars. We have seen different variations of species in Star Wars before.
Examples: Otolla Gungans and Ankura Gungans, Dathomirian Zabraks and Iridonian Zabraks, Lethan Twi'leks and Rutian Twi'leks, Ualaq Aqualish and Quara Aqualish, Northern Mustafarians and Southern Mustafarians, Kadas'sa'Nikto and Kajain'sa'Nikto
