As the youngest of four, I can attest that older siblings are always annoyed.
I am the older sibling, and I agree--I can also see how the older sibling must be annoying too, trying to give advice the younger ones don't want to hear.

I was definitely annoying as a younger sibling. I idolized my siblings. They were 6, 8 and 10 years older than me. I followed my closest in age brother around when I was little. In fact, most of my issues stem from that vs issues with my parents. Having that big age gap made it worse than the typical sibling rivalry probably.
It makes sense you haven’t made any vacation content because Hank is on a journey of meaning.

me too. i live 1 mile from the gulf of mexico. i can see the ocean whenever i want. it’s not jamaica, but still amazing sunsets. i react to every cat i see like i’ve never seen a cat. like a foreign exchange student who sees snow for the first time.

Almost out of battery on hanks camera a tale as old as time
Making content often hinders the ability to just experience the moment, BUT also allows for a record and a memory trigger later to vicariously experience it again instead of mostly or completely forgotten, as well as sharing it with many others, including someday when you're gone your kids and on down. Fully immersing in the moment and doing nothing else allows for better experiences and better sharing that moment with those you are with right then, but so often forgotten, sometimes completely, a short while later. Of course inevitably everyone and literally everything anyone ever did or experienced will be forgotten... BUT at least for now even decades later you'll always have on record that time John hadn't slept for ages and found something Hank was doing super annoying. 😋 And probably also now going to leave your great grandchildren random watching your videos long after you're gone wondering what that was. 😋 -Daven
On vacations, I've taken to bringing along a point and shoot camera for this very reason.
I feel like making content and recording a memory are similar but distinct actions. Making content involves an effort to be entertaining for other people. Recording a memory may or may not have the same effect, but no effort is expended towards that end.
@@SofosProject True, but at the same time any time you do have that camera out your mind is always going to go to what's going to capture this best and if anyone being filmed or photographed, if they notice their behavior and mindset may also change slightly taking out of/away from the moment. Instead of just experiencing more naturally and unhindered by other thoughts or considerations. -Daven
being able to experience the past makes the present less appealing, which is arguably not good
Sometimes capturing that picture to commemorate the occasion is totally the right thing. Sometimes you should just be present in the moment. I think balance is the key.
One can definitely overdo the camera. I don't know that one can really overdo being present in the moment, per se, but taking time to capture memories and mementos can still might be the right move, at least some of the time. Also, sometimes you just want to go out into the world and take pictures. Sometimes taking pictures is a reason to pay more attention to the world, not less. Context and balance.
I'm calling it: 2023 is the Vlogbrothers' Renaissance. We have The Format, John committed to bits, this masterpiece. Take it down a notch and let it go bonkers.

On opening the video I had a moment of mild surprise and vague familiarity at the change in venue but I was just like, "Oh John and Hank are relaxing in a tropical location. How great for them!" Then I heard you start talking about Ting and rum and I literally had to do a double take because there you were talking about a drink from my home. Hello from Jamaica! New Nerdfighter here. I just finished watching EVERY Vlogbrothers video since 2007. I felt like I needed to know all the lore. It took me a couple months or more, but I'm all caught up to present day.

Literally me in Aruba this past summer. There are so many stray cats and they’re all so cute. I was feeding them in alleys and taking pictures. Got home and realized I have more pictures of them than anything else
