Both Masaya and Lim played Liszt’s insane Transcendental Etude #4 “Mazeppa”.
Lim was masterful, playing it at the highest speed with passion and precision. IMO, better than Trifonov and equal to Berezovsky!
For Masaya, however, the “Mazeppa”was not as impressive.
The judges get to compare the 2 very young virtuosos and perhaps decided that Lim was superior, at that moment.
Had Masaya left out the “Mazeppa”, perhaps he would have proceeded to the finals.
Because Masaya was very impressive in his other Warhorse showpieces.
Since many on here don't know Korean, here are 13 facts about Yunchan Lim: (a lot of the interesting details about Yunchan right now are in Korean, as the Koreans themselves are suddenly trying to learn more about him):
1. The "piano academy" he entered at age of 7 wasn't really an "academy". It was just his local neighborhood piano school, not designed to churn out talent by any means. His friends were all gone to Tae Kwon Do or swimming or piano, so he had nothing to do, so out of those 3 he chose piano (thank God).
2. When he was young, he practiced ~5hrs a day, and now he practices non-stop (>12hrs). In an interview, he said that he practices until he collapses 😂. He said he was thankful to his host family in Fort Worth for letting him practice at 4am in the morning, but his teacher Minsoo Sohn, who was texting with him from Korea throughout the competition period, said that 4am was an understatement: he was shocked to see Yunchan sending him audio files and consulting him at 7am in Texas time, and told him to please go to sleep. Most pianists would crash and burn with that kind of schedule, but not Yunchan. And needless to say, his parents didn't push him, and are instead worried about his obsession. (AFAIK they are not from a musical background, and his mom didn't even know what a metronome was)
3. What Sarah says at 6:45 is actually very similar to something Yunchan has said in a recent interview: "if you have good in your heart, the music will come out good. And if you have bad in your heart, the music will inevitably sound bad".
4. Yunchan said he felt like his performances were not even 30% of what he was achieving in practice. Though his teacher believes that Yunchan was just too lost in the moment to properly assess his own playing and if he actually heard his own performance again, he'd find it really wasn't that bad :P
5. After winning the competition, he is anxious about the attention, and really just wishes he could "go to the mountains" and just focus on piano in isolation. His greatest excitement isn't in winning, but that he can now finally move on to learning new repertoire.
6. Yunchan doesn't really like piano competitions, and his teacher said he would highly discourage doing anymore from now on unless Yunchan were dying to do another one. So we probably won't see him in another competition.
7. Yunchan has a fascination with older pianists and often digs up esoteric details/recordings of pianists, and piano pieces. He likes Sofronitsky (highly recommend!), and Horowitz. He's also mentioned he admires Trifonov and hopes to have a wide range of repertoire like him. I think this also explains his humility, since he measures himself against the old greats. He says that "in front of music, we're all just students".
8. Yunchan highly values contemporary pieces as well and even has played his friend's composition in concert (a kid genius Korean composer named 이하느리 (also on youtube)). Yunchan also composes, but is shy about it so far and thinks he's not smart enough for it. He's played his own composition in a concert once, but he's otherwise very secretive about it and even his teacher is dying to hear it.
9. Yunchan also found the Liszt transcendental etudes to be so difficult that he had a big slump because of it. And he got out of the slump by...discovering Bach's Goldberg variations 😂
10. His teacher says Yunchan's playing is the result of constant simplification. He keeps working on removing the unnecessary. Reminiscent of Chopin's words: "After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art."
11. His teacher's main word of direction to him for the competition was: "you need to show the people how beautiful this music is." This I think explains why he played the way he did.
12. Yunchan says his teacher Minsoo Sohn is his role-model and is like his "religion". He also finds inspiration in Uruk, an ancient Korean classical musician from over a thousand years ago, who was obsessed with music.
13. Yunchan's entire education was in Korea. We're increasingly seeing more incredible pianists and competition winners coming from Koreans who never studied abroad. Another recent example is last year's winner of the Busoni competition, Jae Hong Park (who also played an incredible Rach 3 in the finals). They're mainly coming from Yunchan's school, "Korea National University of Arts". You can find many of their performances on TH-cam, and at least one of them is a very famous TH-camr 😉.

I’m a huge Trifonov fan. And I’m being honest when I tell people Lim played the 12 Transcendental études better than Trifonov.
As for the Rach 3, as soon as Lim learn to show a little more restrain with some of the octaves in the final movement, his Rach 3 will be among the best in history.

I watched Yunchan's performance live, very very impressed, not just his technique but also his demeanor/humility, reminded me of the younger version of you know who. It really does take the good heart/ good character to truly reach the audiences. These 2 Pianists are born to play piano.

I was there at the Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth and I watched & heard Yunchan play the Rach 3 in the final round. At the end of his performance I must have yelled Bravo two dozen times. I have several photos with him at the after-party.
And I forgot to say, Yunchan is also very polite, courteous and accommodating to his fans in terms of being photographed with them and answering their questions (even though his English is not very good). Combine that with the fact that Yunchan is also quite a good-looking, handsome, and attractive young man, I think he has all the qualities of becoming the next big megastar of the classical world (And did I say his manners and demeanor are also very well-polished, like a prince? He is perfect!).

Mr. Lim seemed to be genuinely surprised by the jury decision. In his interview, he said he never imagined he would win. He said he just wanted to have a self-evaluation of his play on this international stage before getting into his adulthood. He said winning was not on his mind. His demeanor and words at the interview were so shy and humble. I really liked him as a person as well as his music.
He is genuine. He plays from the heart and that is why he connects to every single heart. Add it technique, expression and dedication. We all can see his beautiful heart. As soon as I heard him play I knew he was going to be the winner.

Yunchan said an interview that his purpose of playing the piano is to express the pain deep inside us and to heal people, again with music.
"Music (played by me) can't deceive so I always try to have a genuinely compassionate and understanding heart toward human beings and the world."
He is inspired from lots of old literatures and everyday incidents. For example he read Divine Comedy of Dante countless times to play a piece of Liszt.
Also he often deliverately cuts himself from modern things or social media to fully interact with the original composer and his intent, and be immersed in the music itself. He said there's a magma-like singing inside him but to perfectly express that beauty of the song he needs to struggle, study, think a lot, and practice sometimes overnight, go beyond the skills to the realm of pure art..

It is scandalous he didn’t win the Mozart prize. It was the best concerto of the round by far.
I'm not a pianist and I also haven't seen the video. Did he play it perhaps too romantically and with a lot of rubato etc?
Just my guess (having not seen the video), I'm guessing it was a style thing. If not, then I would most likely stand with you because this young man's technique is phenomenal.

Strangely, when I listened to Lim YunChan’s performances, I reflect on myself more than the happiness I feel. You feel what miracle can happen when you put all your passion into the life you have been given and do your best. I think that anyone can become a performer like Lim YunChan on the stage of their lives. His performance seems to be comforting and encouraging us to be indomitable and strong. When I ponder over the days and days, I always reflect my life and dream of the future. It’s a very surreal, immaculate, valuable, and unique performance. Thank you, Lim YunChan, you’re so inspiring.
I keeping playing the end of the Rach. Everyone knows that they have heard something unique. Lifetime stuff. It ends. And then look at Marin - she's in shock. And then so is everyone else in their way - expressing 'shock and awe'. The Leader. The violinist who thumps her thigh with her fist - more than just applaud. And the audience ignites - not a great bravo - but way beyond. They express their shock. And humanity is released. This is no performance. It simply is. And will be for all time.
I totally agree with your opinion that Yunchan rather creats his own space while others play in their given space.
While I was listening to his Listz etude No.12 last night, I thought "Am I watching a 4D movie or what?" In addition to a beautiful melody, I could see snow covered field after a harsh snowstorm, hear whirling sound and feel coldness, deep desparation and killing pain inside when you adore someone you can never get. I could understand why Listz chose to be a priest at age 54 after he knew he could never marry his lifetime lover. I never had this kind of experience in my life before.

Phrases of Yun-chan's performance of the Rachmaninoff 3rd keep cycling through my head. His performances throughout the Cliburn were profoundly affecting, but his Rachmaninoff revealed the sweeping narrative of the concerto so that I understood it for the first time. He connects with each composer with respect, great skill, and abundant generosity.
I have watched the Cliburn vids of this year’s competition over and over, and Yunchan Lim was the obvious winner to me. The music flowed through him and he never appeared to be concentrating.
This does not happen by accident! Mr. Lim has his culture (S. Korean) , his parents, his teachers and his personal dedication and discipline to classical music to become a phenomenal creation of musical excellence. It takes a higher intelligence and the foundational support of all who have invested to create a great musical genius with superb piano artistry. What a rare gift to the world to witness and enjoy!

Excellent commentary! What I found even more intriguing than the audiences applause was the ORCHESTRA'S reactions to this marvelous player. Also, kudos to the excellent conductor and musicians, often the overlooked co-performers in any live event.
That Rach 3 was incredibly special. I watch the last 4 minutes every day and it hits on such an emotional level. We got to witness greatness.
the only pianist that lets me see honestly the feelings coursing through him, his fingers and being clearly translated into the sound of the piano.

Yunchan Lim was truly phenomenal in his overall performance. I was first drawn to him in his execution of the Liszt 12 Trancendental Etudes. He kept the audience on the edge of their seats with his brand of artistry. My favourite is the Mazeppa and Chasse Neige. Although he played like a winner, I at first doubted if the jury would award him first prize because of his age and perhaps experience. But they justly gave it to him. He was practically flawless. Lim's performance of the Rachmaninoff was truly unique, viceral and secure. He has got speed but knows how to use it to musical ends. He knows how to commmunicate with showmanship, emotion and to electrify the audience. That's how he won.
Clayton Stephenson as an African America did well to reach the finals. Honourable mention is to be made of his execution of the Beethoven Waldstein Sonata. The artistry and speed at which he took it was impressive. His octave glissandi at the end of the sonata was really clean. Some do it with two hands. Notice also that Stephenson played the Ossia cadenza of the Rachmaninoff Concerto # 3.
Surprise to see Sarah Tuan there. I have always admired her playing especially of the Mozart Sonata in D major and her Liszt-Paganini Etude in Eb major (octave study).
Lim is such a humble guy. He said in a Korean interview that winning a competition doesn't automatically make himself play better meaning he would keep practicing and he wouldn't just be arrogant with all the spotlight. I myself am Korean and I could genuinely feel that he really meant it. When he speaks, it is reaaaaally slow but every word means something to the level that he is almost like a young philosopher. When he speaks, i could tell that he is not even into modern teenage SNS stuff. He just thinks a lot, reads a lot, studies a lot, and most importantly, he practices a lot. His techniques and everything is really gifted but i personally think that the best talent that he has is how much he loves music, and how much pure passion he has. I don't know how else i can describe it. The way he sees music is just sooo pure. Thank you for your analysis and deep research on him! I really like your video👍

Clarity, crispness, seeming effortlessness, and in the Rachmaninov concerto especially, a gamut of emotions ranging from exhilaration to tenderness to yearning to playfulness seamlessly connected.
I didn’t know how to express what I felt by watching Yunchan’s performance. 3D…that was what has moved me in tears. Thank you for the perfect description.

I think Cliburn had that the most deserving winners this year. Lim truly deserved the first prize with the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 3. (Although I was a fan of Anna, I am still happy she came 2nd!)
Great vid. Your and Sarah's comments on why (you think) he won seemed so on point. Here's what struck me - and it was the Mozart concerto that really brought this home. I think in the competition situation many young pianists - no matter how well prepared - are quite understandably sufficiently stressed by competition conditions as to have their ENJOYMENT of the music they are playing somewhat to considerably dimmed. In other words, they become more concerned about the quality of their playing than about the music itself. Like I say, this is completely understandable. Although I play the piano reasonably well, I've never faced that kind of stress myself and doubt I'd hold up very well under it. Lim, however never seemed to lose his enjoyment of the music. In the Mozart concerto it was obvious that he was enjoying both Mozart's amazing music and the pleasure of making music with colleagues. Anyway, just my $.02 worth (which don't go very far these days.) Thanks for the vid and I look forward to more.
That Mozart blew me away as well. Mozart is easy to take for granted, runs, predictable patterns, all good stuff but almost hackneyed. But then along comes someone who makes it fun and yet profound. I've never heard anything like it before (but obviously I've heard the work, just not like that).

Thank you for this compilation that gives us an analysis of the magic that we all witnessed in every one of Yunchan's performances. Hard work and an incredible gift served him well. However, what is mentioned here, his character and lack of ego, and complete selflessness and immersion of being one with the music are the things that transported us through his performances. Yes, you have to have complete confidence in your ability to master the repertoire, but he goes that one step further of identification with the composers...as if he knows them personally. Just exceptional in every way.

Incredible playing and the obvious winner from the first recital. He told an interviewer he practices 16 hours a day seven days a week. Hard for anyone to beat that.

Thanks for posting this well-put-together video. I loved Yunchan Lim's performances at the Cliburn and your heartfelt first video posted during the competition, expressing your amazement, was so enjoyable as it shared so much of what many of us were also feeling.
I really appreciate your well prepared analysis and comments on why Yunchan could get this sensational reverberation from his performance at the Cliburn competition. I am a 72 years old Korean layman in classical music. I by chance woke up at 4 a.m. on June 20 and, from your U-tube channel , heard Yunchan's Rachmaninov piano concerto No.3. At the grand finale, I wept and wept for some minutes and had to go to wash my face. I am no good at music and do not understand the simple scales. I was curious to know why I wept. Since then I visited many classical music U-tube channels to hear about Yoonchan's performance and I think yours is the best. Thank you again.

I missed Lim’s first round but was listening to commentators. Was skeptical, cuz of age. Absolutely blew me away with his Rach!! Maturity beyond belief!
I know nothing about classical music. To me, it is beautiful music from a long time ago and I always wanted to listen to it more often but there’s always no time for that. I, as someone who spend so much of time on TH-cam, ended up clicking Yunchan’s performance and now here I am. I guess if there is no competition like this, I would have not known that Yunchan and other great pianists exist. I will def listen to classical music more and I am listening to other competitors’ performance as well, cause now you want to know what’s the difference. I am happy to find your channel on my journey for classical music and performances of it. Thanks!
I'm a concert pianist and have attended past Van Cliburns, though I couldn't attend this year. Anton Nel (professor of UT and a friend was actually one of the judges this year). I was indeed incredibly impressed with Yunchan. Besides excellent technique, he took some daring tempo changes and really excellent choice of voicing and shifts of dynamics.. Brought Alsop to tears. However I have to agree with some of the other comments concerning his solo repertoire in the recital programs .. while others played much more emotionally mature works. Actually one of my favorite players was Dmytro Choni and I thought he should have won 2nd over Anna. Yunchan did move me to tears at the finale of the last movement of the Rach... and to convey that at 18 is extraordinary. I used to compete in international competitions (never Van Cliburn) but I know the intense concentration, hard work and stamina it takes. I really also loved Dmytro's Prokofiev 3rd. It was refreshing to hear Gershwin's Concerto in F, by Clayton.. though he took some improv liberties I didn't care for. I used to perform both the Prokofiev 3rd and Gershwin in competitions ... This year seemed the toughest of any year. 3 concerti. .. Many who are not artists might now know how difficult Mozart is to convey.. it is so exposed... So very challenging to shift from recitals of Liszt .. to Mozart concerto, then to Rach 3rd. Many might not realize that these artists have memorized to perfection over 6 hours of music. 10000s of pages of the most difficult repertoire ... Such respect for all the artists but indeed the 3 finalists were my favs.
Masaya should have been in the finals. I’m not sure Choni did a better job than Anna because he had a big memory lapse in the Prokofiev 3.
IMO, no question Yunchan is at a different stratosphere.
Choni is my 2nd choice. He’s a nice guy too. He was quoted praising Yunchan as “incredible”.
It’s those “emotional” works from the other competitors that made my wife and my kids bored to tears.( and my wife is a Chopin enthusiast).
As for Yunchan, he played Beethoven like Beethoven, Mozart like Mozart, Couperin like Couperin, and Rachmaninoff like Rachmaninoff. And he’s Rach 3 may be the most compelling I’ve ever ever heard.
The judges commented on this, and most agree.
As much as I enjoyed Anna and Choni, they did not have what it takes to hold an audience from the first note of a recital to the last.
Yunchan was captivating. Since listening to him, I’ve replayed the Rach 3, the Mozart Concerto and the Transcendental étude so many times that I’m now familiar with their scores.
I can’t wait to go to his live performances!

And I enjoyed your genuine and adorable review on Yun Chan very much. ps : Yun Chan has practiced all day for 3 years in the gray room with no painting on the wallpaper, which was quite a severe time that he has gone through with self-discipline and struggle with himself and music in a way emotionally much difficult time.

he interviewed with some koean media. and he said he didnt satisfied with any of his playing at competition. and he think it was only 30% his could playing RACHMANINOFF NO. 3 comparing at his normal practice. it means he could play better then 70% more than final.^^;;;;;
and he just want to go mountain or like that place and he just want to pay piano again and again alone. he didnt care competition and he just want to check how his position before fully grown. and he still is thinking next repatory not competition result.
I heard he had practicing even for 14hours even right before competition day. he played until ar 4am fron around 1pm. his host dad JEFF detweiler wrote to youtube. (you can find his host ded ?comment at youtube) and he was really appreciated for house owners.host family. he asked them if he can play for long times and they said yes.
and he was really really happy because he could play so that long without any worry...he cant play l;ike that so long at his house like that.his home is aprtment many people live in near. one of his best pick was host home and host family.van cliburn introduce host family and competitioner and even gice piano during competition. very surprising.
I never heard any players play for that long times even the day of competition. he is really crzsy for piano.
maybe that is why we can see such amazing playing. he didnt care result. his , mountain ,comment had made headlines of many koreann media.
I ALSO very surprised . this is the first time the play at competition moved my mind. usually competiton playing is more careful because they care if they put wrong. but he didnt and he did play perfectely both.
Of course, the Yunchan phenomenon started with his opening rendition of Stephen Hough's composition (for which Yunchan won a prize), and just snowballed from there. The variety and versatility he displayed through his flawless technique spoke to the judges and audiences and built a confident wave to the inevitable gold medal win. A large contributing factor was his obvious love of the music and his decided lack of ego. (And dare I mention that hair!) This particular Cliburn competition was an example of a perfect storm, named Yunchan!

I think that the "winner" of a competition or the celebrated performer is someone who makes the audience feel wonderful about being alive at the moment of playing. I am utterly transformed by his Liszt Transendental Etudes. I cannot tell you why. I just know that often listening to new upcoming pianists, I hear myself saying "wow, they are good". But that didn't really come to mind listening to yunchan. I was immersed in the music itself, rather than the performer.
So glad I found you and your channel while watching hours of Cliburn. Really enjoy hearing what you have to say. It’s hard for me to explain Yunchan, but I totally agree that his repertoire choices helped him to stand out - plus he played magnificently. Looking forward to your next video.

I just wanna say that i love your content and what you're doing! There's a slight correction though as Hyuk Lee also performed the Chopin Variations in last year's competition, so Bruce wasn't the only one who played them.

Hello. I’m from New Orleans and I discovered Yunchan Lim about 3 months ago. Needless to say I have become addicted to his demeanor, temperament and unbelievable ability on the piano. No matter what he is playing I am spellbound and hanging on each note. Never in my 72 yrs have I ever followed a performer everyday listening to him for at least 2 hrs.. I search for his full performances but usually I only find ‘shorts’. Can you direct me please? This is like finding you today discussing the VanCliburn finals and choices made by the participants. Yes I want to listen because I can learn.
So any recommendations will be much appreciated.

wasn't one of my "favorite" pianists in the mix... BUT still you got to admire his DRIVE and ambition... REALLY hard work can bring you a long way... with all that being said... there were pieces in his program that really astonished me... even out side of the Liszt... I hope his career lasts and he keeps going and growing!

Sarah is extremely charming and I really enjoyed hearing her thoughts... but as to great artists being moral beings... I hope she reads up on Picasso and her fellow Juilliard alum Miles Davis.
The one thing really stand out is that he doesnt like competetion, very uncomfortable wt it and also he is very shy but his wish is to live in deep in the mountain wt his piano! Just think, u really really have to love piano!!!
