This whole scene made me cry, I mean wow. Finally after years he physically tells Uhtred that if it wasn't for him there wouldn't be a King, he wouldn't be there. What an amazing King he was, an amazing character in this show. "My England.."

The relationship between these two was the soul of the show, and this is their very best scene together.

I feel like without Athelwold their relationship would’ve remained solid until Alfred’s death. After Uhtred saves athelflead in season two Alfred respects Uhtred on a whole new level. Even Alfred’s wife is way more welcoming to Uhtred.

This scene is easily the most Iconic scene out of the entire series.
It’s the culmination of nearly 30 years of things needing to be said that both characters needed to hear.
It was Alfred’s words and actions here that won him Uhtred’s loyalty and Alfred finally admitted just how Much Uhtred meant to him and how much he actually valued him.

The best interpretation of Alfred in my opinion, David Dawson made this character his own, forever and ever.

Fell in love with this show and got into some of the books of Bernard Cornwell, I got into it around the first covid lockdown. Being from the UK with Briton, Saxon Viking and Norman ancestors It was great to see such an important yet forgotten by many time in English and U.K. history being put to writing and screen
This series had such a great cast. Especially Alfred’s actor, all were great but a few stood out and David’s portrayal of Alfred did for me and he’s still a highly underrated actor

I love the part where he says he remembers when he gave Edward to Iseult - I was disappointed when he didn't thank her for saving his son and I loved that he finally said that he always remembers her! You can see the surprise on Uhtred's face!
    Such a powerful scene! ❤👏

This scene was so incredible! I don't have words for how fantastic these actors were in this moment (they're great in the whole series but this scene really hit another level). A phenomenal show that I wish more people knew about. Absolutely amazing!!

One of the greatest scenes in television. This show in it's early stages was phenomenal! Perfectly accurate to the historical records we have for this time. It was let down slightly as the seasons went on due to the fact the entire series and film take place over the course of around 50 years and Uthred doesn't age a day, but excluding that, brilliant show from start to finish!

As often as I've watched this scene, I still well up seeing the tears in their eyes. There are so many stellar moments in this series, but this has to be the most powerful. I'm not sure I can think of a scene in anything else I've ever watched that matches it for intensity, to be honest.

This scene for me was the best of the Last Kingdom!
Alfred is one of those people that are indenial about their love for someone! I think that his faith was so strong that he couldn't comprehend why someone not of his faith could be his most faithful! Like Edward said "he believed in his God and doubted those who did not...and yet...it was a heathen he did trust most."
His scene with Edward with the people of Wessex was brilliant too! It makes me wonder how many great warriors there have been over the years who we have heard nothing about! "Unwritten...but I am there!" ❤

And Alfred plays uhtred yet again very convenient he says all this now after all this time the whole family screwed uhtred time and time again he was a total simp to aetheflead aswell...we all just got lost in the sentiment of this to be blind to the manipulation

@michaelkean5969 he is being genuine but throughout his whole life he did nothing but disrespect uhtred after he saved wessex over and over again the fact they fell out was because alfred yet again let's uhtreds wife be openly disrespected and did not treat him like the other ealdormen and then was going to arrest him for defending his dead wife which any man would of done...now he needs him again and he knows full well these are the words and respect he has desperately craved off him he didn't even write his name once in his saga but admits he wouldn't be king without him...alfred told him what he wanted to hear at the perfect time it was going to benefit him it was pure manipulation

Shame that a series like this has twisted historical fact and left loads of gullible people thinking that Alfred won the war v the vikings by employing one! The reality is the Vikings were beaten by a load of south west farmers who handed the Vikings their assaes in a sling, that is by the way a professional Vikings army! As usual being English or English history is distorted, where in this case a series made depicting the real Alfred and the English farmers defeating a vile load of people from another country raping murdering people throughout England for money would have been a far better representation of what really did happen!
