Go read "The Enemy within: Thatcher's Secret War Against the Miners".
At the time it was reported that Arthur Scargill embezzled money from the NUM. However, later we found out that this was not true and it turned out the intellegince services put money in his account and then sent the bank statement to the papers. Absolute disgrace that the state done this to one of our own citizens.

Its a clear as day to me that Roger Windsor was a plant.
Out of all that the only thing is the £25,000 at the start.

Scargill was a loser who conned Union members to follow his lies, and support a strike.
NUM members were desperate. Scargill gave them hope. Then robbed them.
There are NO TRADES UNION LEADERS WHO DO NOT LIVE A GOOD LIFESTYLE. Paid for by the poor members, who have to live hand to mouth.
The Union Leaders denounce Capitalism, yet socialism is more biased against the needy. and want to get as much as they can out of their struggling members.
With Capitalism you have an idea where you are going. Socialism is all smoke, mirrors and deception.

A repulsive figure . He was also totally inflexible . He had them by the nuts and could have easily reached a deal ie better pay and that would have been best for both sides BUT he was hell bent in bringing down Thatcher's gov. Revolution is what he had in mind. The Brits dont like that which is further proof how little grasp he had of the national mood let alone on the other half . Not everyone is working class . He would have fitted right into 1917 revolution in the soviet union .

About 6 years ago I remember reading an academic paper written in the 1990's (if my memory serves me right) by a former miner who had been a staunch supporter of the NUM and Scargill.
During his research he. learned that during the 70s the Labour government had closed more mines than the Conservatives ever had and that about 100 more mines were due to be closed by the coal board on the instructions of Labour. Maggie as the new PM ordered a review of the planned closures and as a result about 25% were to be saved from closing down. But Scargill wanted to make a name for himself which he managed to do whilst destroying an entire industry.

    • @THEJR-of5tf
      @THEJR-of5tf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wilson and Callaghan, were closing uneconomical mines without a problem from the Unions.
When Maggie did the same Scargill said a miners strike would bring down the tories.
However Maggie wrong footed him, The "THUGS" sent in by Maggie were actually sent in by Scargill to further discredit the Government.
Allegedly Scargill and his cronies amassed a fortune from the strike.
When the Men and their families were getting into debt, and starving.
Socialism is like Orwell's 1948. Everyone is equal!! But some are more "equal" than others.

Nottingham miners refused to strike until we held a NATIONAL BALLOT, but Scargill refused because he knew he was afraid of losing and that led to the picket lines and the downfall of the miners ,i had always said as i was on strike at the time if he had had a national ballot and the NUM voted to strike, we would have won but denying a national ballot he split the unions and all is now history.

The editor of the Daily Mirror (who worked on this story with Cook) Roy Greenslade apologised to Scargill over this story in 2002 and in the same year Roger Windsor was ordered to pay £250,000 in restitution and costs by a French court. Some time ago, in '83 I think, I was driving through Manchester in the early hours 4am, I had local radio on, they played a recorded interview with Scargill.
Long before anyone heard of Paxman, Scargill was asked a question and went on one of his rants, the question was repeated and he went on another rant, question repeated again, he started another rant then stopped and said "I've already answered that" Interviewer said "No you haven't, I've asked you but you didn''t answer the question"
Scargill completely lost it and went mental, he made all sorts of threats, this was to be the man's last day in radio, he would never work in any media again etc, etc. I thought that should have been repeated every hour on every radio station to let those who didn't know already what a shit he was, but he must have had some veto on the broadcast, shame.

The unions committed suicide, as someone who was there and a union member (because where I worked was a “closed shop”, I saw first hand the union leaders trying to take over the government. In the seventies it was constant strikes and insane inflation as the bully boys tried to show how strong they were, of course constantly striking, pushing up prices, and making the goods they produced ever more expensive and opening the door to foreign imports. Well done boys, congratulations, you were so bloody clever weren’t you? They worshipped scargill like trump followers.

@freebeerfordworkers So true, I got an HGV license and my dad helped get me a truck driving job there. I was a skilled car bodyshop painter at the time but I actually quadrupled my wages so I was very happy with things, then the union bully boys announced that we were striking for more money, I was used to talking to my boss if I felt I was worth more money and we discussed I man to man, I couldn’t let myself become a tool of the TGWU so I told them that I was very happy thank you and I wouldn’t be joining in. As it was the strike was called off but I was shunned by many of my colleagues.

Family members were miners, I've heard more than a couple of accounts of union reps on the picket lines with big wads of cash and registers to give out to those picketing. The idea was, you gave your name, they ticked you off and you got your money for being there. You can probably guess what happened the union reps were ticking off the names of people that weren't there and then pocketing the cash themselves. Money is always the common denominator regardless of which side of the political fence you sit on.

In 1994 a French court (because he stole the money in France)found he stole £29,000 on the money and used it to pay his mortgage off and he ended up having to pay £250,000 in costs as well. Windsor was also paid £50,000 by The Daily Mirror for this story. In 2002 the then editor of the Daily Mirror apologised to Scargill and admitted it was a mistake and that they paper had been conned. It appears Roger Cook is not able to admit his error.

The Wikipedia on AS gives a decent overview of that time and what was accused etc., and there have been many articles and books since then that makes what is here less cut'n'dried. I don't blame Roger Cook, and I'm not suggesting a stitch up by him - I think the integrity of his body of work stands for itself - but he only had the narrative presented to him at the time, and not perhaps the full picture.

@@neilmcintosh6638 I obviously understand Wiki's limitations, and so was only using it to illustrate my point about the definitiveness of this documentary, when there was clearly much disputed in what was asserted here in entirely one direction. And I say that as someone with very clear memories of the strike, and who worked on the soup kitchens and fund raised for the miners and their families, but I had no great admiration for Scargill at the time, so I have no reason to jump to defend him personally. The fact that I disliked/ distrusted his motives him makes it intuitive to have my prejudices confirmed by this. However, the propaganda machine at the time, and for a number of years after always made me suspicious that there was a strong agenda to rubbish the integrity of the strike and any of those closely involved with it.

@@neilmcintosh6638 The wiki pages have footnotes to sourced articles and books. It was a smear against the union and against Scargill. (And I'm not a fan of the bloke.) Funny how an old anti-union hit job gets uploaded to TH-cam in the same period when unions are fighting back against a cost of living crisis that is hurting millions of ordinary working class people. Just a coincidence, no doubt.

No. The evidence is there. Mortgages being cleared, that in itself is enough.
