    This was fantastic, Cobalt! Very cool to watch and compare how we both approached the same topic, some areas were similar but others were quite different - I love the subtle editing flourishes and historical results that you think of to add in all sorts of situations.

    The super kill screen is an elegant solution to the problems presented by uncapped length matches in tournaments. This was the first video I've seen discussing it.

    This video is amazangly made! The pacing is really good, and I love how you visualise what would happen/has to happen in certain scenarios! Your commentary is very good, using proper terminology while still making things understandable for thsoe who don't know competitive NES Tetris well. Seeing all these clutch plays made me want to improve my skills in Tetris!

    for anyone who is going like "Oh but can't they just play on the super killscreen with rolling?" The framerate of the game (60fps) literally prevents them from being able to play past the super killscreen
    they have 1/6 of a second, or 10 frames to move the piece, and the fastest movement made by rolling is around 30hz, or 1 movement every 2 frames, and as I said above, the player has 10 frames to move the piece, So with the board *empty*, they can get a long bar vertically to the left, with perfect 30hz movement. Hope this explains everything
    Edit : if i addressed something wrong, please let me know

      But didn't Alex clear like 5 lines on 39? So with a good board and next pieces they could at least line out for a while right?

    • @vicious_rhubarb2247
      @vicious_rhubarb2247 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@forthebirds4 Yes it's theoretically possible just requires crazy timing and board awareness that is unsustainable for longer periods of time, at least at the current level of top play
      For instance if I recall correctly Alex T is currently the world record holder for most lines cleared on a super killscreen start with 13 lines, and in a real tournament game with super killscreen at level 39 nobody has made it to level 40 yet (requiring 7-10 lines cleared after the super killscreen speed takes effect)

      I always envision it like this: pieces drop 2 rows every frame, while inputs can only be registered on every 2nd frame. This in itself would give a 1:4 advantage to gravity. But since the board is twice as high as it is wide, the advantage is lowered to ~1:2. This would almost be true, if there was no stack. Another issue comes from piece orientations. The height it falls until it reaches the floor (or the stack) is lowered even more. So, gravity has the upper hand compared to the side-to-side movement.

    This was amazing coverage! And you picked up the "introduce it for the newcomers" habit which I love so much from agamescout too. My only gripe is nobody explains why people talk about move timing in hertz, which for those of us not familiar with it isn't obvious. But boy did this match heat up!

    Could you explain why the decision was made to add a super kill screen at lv 39?

    • @leothompson2777
      @leothompson2777 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because with everyone rolling, matches were long and boring when everyone conquered the original kill screen speed. You could just take singles and doubles right at the bottom to basically go on forever. At least this way it forces you to build a score again, instead of just play on, and on, and on.....
