When it comes to using an AD200 in a modifier the question that people will ask is, "should I use the bare bulb or should I use the fresnel head, or does it matter, can I use either one?" In this video we're going to find out if it matters which one you use.

I know this video has been out for a year now but it was exactly the information I was looking for and you explained it very well. Thanks so much!
You are most welcome @Susan Pszenitzki! Thank you for watching!
Finally a simple but meaningful explanation, Thanks!
You are most welcome! 🙏🏾
Thank you this was very informative video, I always wondering about the difference about the bulb or the fresnel head. Your video are the first to really point out the difference. I hope you can create another video like this with the real world shootings and point out the difference of bare bulbs vs fresnel head. Thank you!!
I will add that to my list and most definitely make a real-world video comparing the two! Thank you for the suggestion!
Truly appreciate you taking the time to do this so I didn't have to. Answered exactly what I was looking for.
Happy to help! 💪🏾
Awesome video. Just what i was loking for.
Great video! Interestingly enough, in the Sharpen video about "Overpowering the Sun" the AD200 with the fresnel head smoked an AD600 when they were both using a shoot-through umbrella, but fell notably behind when they were both placed in softboxes. You touched on the difference of the intensity of light between the ad200 bare bulb and the fresnel head, but it's good to be aware that the modifier itself can additionally make an enormous difference on top of that.
I agree 100% @Ryan Redmond. I have modifiers that cut light by 3.5 stops when all levels of diffusion are in (which is usually overkill anyway, lol).
Thanks bro, very linear and logical flow of information backed up by quantitative information.
You’re speaking my language! 😂

Great breakdown! Super interesting as someone that does this exact setup with a 42in ez glow soft box. I went back to using the fresnel head because I dropped the barbule once and had to replace it, but I think the differences for what I do like headshots and just enhancing the ambient light for lifestyle photos typically indoors, the bare bulb would be nicer. Great video!
I'm too lazy to ever use the bare bulb, lol.
Brilliant, thank you!
Very practical. Easy to listen to. !!!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏾
Really appreciate your work here. I tried to compare this by comparison test but i didn't see much difference by then. Maybe it's difficult when you are the one sitting at the front of the camera rather than a mannequin Thank you you for pointing out the output between the 2.
Awesome. I just got my Evolv 200s from Adorama today, and this saved me a lot of time. Thanks!

Thanks, I did a comparison today with my MS300's and AD200's today. I needed more power for an optical snoot and learned that I get a lot more power out of my AD200 with the fresnel head. When I watched this, it just confirmed my hypothesis.
Yup @Dawn Stafford, fresnel head provides more output, bare bulb provides more even spread. Tools in the kit.
Is there any difference quality of light between barebulb and round head when using ad200pro? Is it the barebulb produce harsh light compare to round head? Thank you in advance
@@albertprabowo7195 I would love to know this as well @AnthonyToglife I came to this video with the exact same challenge: That I want more power with my optical snoot and uses the AD200 bare bulb now. Another reason I would like to use either round head or fresnel is that I think they (at least the round head) offer modelling light opposed to the bare bulb. And this can be vey helpful with the optical snoot. Let me know if you found out more ;-) Thanks a lot in advance ;-)

with through the umbrella, one can adjust the position of flash and have more or less area covered with bare bulb and intensity also remains the same in comparison with Fresnel head. that is what i concluded from my online research. but now this video is new to me and it shows that w.r.t soft boxes the case is different. here one cannot adjust the adpro 200's distance from the edge of the diffuser like one can do in umbrella right? sorry i am newbie and so such a question
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much!
You are most welcome @Charles Gossett!
Very helpful comparison! I've been shopping for my first strobes, and been chart a course to build a system over time. Naturally, the AD200 is high on the list, but I'm sort of cross shopping with studio strobes that are cheaper. I suspect that I will start with a 3 light setup with an AD200 and a pair of speed lights as secondary lighting. The fresnel head of the AD200 will probably match the speed lights better, and now I know that the fresnel head isn't something to be super concerned about, especially as a beginner.
That is a system I use quite often - an AD200 and two speedlights, and it has served me very well. Some photographers will push the AD300, which I understand, and I could argue that’s a great option, but I like having two AD200s with the AD-B2 adapter that I can use for a 400w light if needed.
@@AnthonyToglife Yes, that will be my plan. I was going to get some MS300s or SK400s, but eventually I will venture to outdoor shooting. What good is 400W if I can't use it where I need it, right? I'll probably start with an AD200 as my key light for a while, and then add the AD-B2 when I'm ready for some outdoor shooting.
I've seen people pull off lovely beach shots with speed lights, to be fair. Although I'm sure it must've been at full power with a horrible recycle time.
The AD200 makes a lot of sense. Even if I outgrow it, it's a perfect fill light for a larger setup.
What about light output difference between the fresnel head and the round head?
I unfortunately don’t have a round head @Kenny Pringle or else I’d try it out, but my thought is that the light output wouldn’t change much, only the light pattern/spread. But that’s just an educated guess. 😉
Such an informative video ! I'm glad I found your channel.
Thank you @Apa Macam! I'm happy you're here.
Thank you for doing this comparison I too was wondering about this very same difference. Keep up the great work and all the best with you and yours.

Awesome video I haven’t been so interested in flash but I know it’s because my lack of experience will give it another go with a speed light and see what I can create. Thank you for the video and the thoughts to explore in my photography.
@Christopher Rodriguez I truly feel it's important to at least know how to use flash, even if you choose not to use it much. Sometimes natty light can be very restricting in your compositional options and it's nice to have the flexibility of OCF to do whatever you want, not to mention the creative options it opens up. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your flash work. ;-)
Good video, thanks. It helps me make some educated decisions when I use my new Godox AD200.

@Ernesto Sue Photography thanks my guy!
Would love to know what the differences are with round head as well compared with Fresnel and bare bulb?
Unfortunately I don't have the round head for my AD200 @Chas Bell, but, I would imagine the result would be about the same since the round head is still directional (light forward) and using a deflector plate would essentially eliminate most of the benefit of using a round head.
Another informative video Anthony. Keep it going brother.

Repeating this experiment with a double head mount (2xad200) and comparing it with a single ad400 would be interesting. While I do not have an octobox, i may try it with a rectangular softbox. I wonder if a double ad200 bulb setup does create a hot spot in the center or not.

interesting I would have never considered the fresnel head but this was interesting to see, for me the whole idea of a modifier is to soften the shadows, but at times the fresnel might be an interesting choice.
@Robert Birnbach I often use the fresnel mainly because it's already attached to my eVOLV 200 and I'm too lazy to swap it out, so I was equally intrigued to see the results from this test. For me I think I"ll start using the bare bulb more mainly to alleviate that green color cast, but if I need more power or a slight punch in the highlights, I'll go fresnel. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Great video, but I'd like to add that you can get a very much softer light from the fresnel head by manually set its zooming range to wide angle (14mm-20mm). Have you ever tried that?
@patrickb4321 I always keep any fresnel-style light set to it’s widest zoom; I only zoom it out when I have a specific need/purpose.
Interesting. Simply out of curiosity I did this same test about two weeks ago. Not as technical with the light meter mind you but I came to the same conclusions. Definitely going to start trying out the bare bulb more often.
@I Am Hassan curiosity will get ya every time, lol. I didn't start using the bare bulb until I started using the AD-B2, now I'll reach for it a lot more.
The question I was expecting an answer for. I also use the old ad200. Good job. (I always use the bulb btw)
@Almarillion I think I'll start using the bare bulb most of the time. If there was an easier way to transport the AD200 with the bare bulb attached, I would probably always use it but the case is designed for the fresnel head.
@@AnthonyToglife i carry both heads in the default case. Just need to remove the bulb from the head piece as it has a seperate section to put in. Reattaching takes 10 secs or so.
@@Almarillion nah my case is the same, it’s just more work attaching/removing the bulb for transport versus simply using the fresnel head.
Helpful video...thank u. In using the Fresnel flash head, I'm finding out that the modeling lamp is triggered on when controlling it w/the flashpoint R2 trigger. The manual says it'll turn off after one hour, but I surely don't want it on the whole time draining my battery. Is there a setting I'm missing. Have you experienced this.
I have never once experienced this @skydivejw, and I have that exact trigger. I don't readily know of a setting because I've never had this problem. Perhaps you have a defective trigger?

The AD100 has the highest green tint. The V1 just needs a .8 magenta to correct it if mixing with other lights otherwise just customer WB that thing.
Fresnel heads give an over inflated mater reading in softboxes as they are more focused, I personally will take bare bulb over that any day.
Bare bulb in umbrellas like shoot through need a wide reflector really.
The deflector plate in Glow modifiers eliminate that more focused light @Richard Bradbury, and if one feathers the light (as I prefer to do), this also eliminates any issues with meter readings. I wouldn't necessarily say fresnel heads give over inflated readings though; if you have the center of the modifier facing your subject, it would be best to not blow out that part of the face or subject by metering more around the perimeter of your modifier. I hardly ever use the bare bulb and I personally don't have any issues metering or using fresnel heads.
Interesting output, Anthony whats your thoughts on removing the baffle on the bare bulb, as that second defuser is cutting down the light.
I could @Michael Phillips, but, what I really wanted to illustrate in this video was an apple-to-apple comparison; in other words, how do they both perform under the same conditions/circumstances. From a practicality standpoint, yes, removing the inner baffle would help, and I actually have a video comparing the light with the inner in and removed, and for the most part, the inner only provides marginal (really need to look hard) improvements to the quality of light.
Great information in this video. But I'm curious--where'd you get them guns?
LOL @Shane Liffin, home grown! :-D

@TMIDD light meter gang gang! LOL! I do think I'll start using the bare bulb more, mainly because I don't want that green color cast.
Good information!
Thank you @Tom Macioszek!
Thank you. There is another point I thinkk: The importance of the modeling light.
There is no modeling light on the bare bulb, and for me it is important to have a modeling light to see how you are changing it.
So I think there is no choice it is the fresnel head.
What is your opinion ?
I never use the modeling light so that isn't a factor for me @user-cz7wp4jz6n, but if that's something you use, there is no other choice. ;-)

@@AnthonyToglife likewise, when you share your knowledge like this you unlock so much potential in others and that's an amazing thing! I pass on what I can, when I can. - my way of giving back! Take it easy bro.
Great video and info! I never tested this myself but expected the result would be something like this. I usually use the bare bulb because it is spreading light nice and even and I never really ran out of power. One question though: you mentioned you used double diffusers. Did you do that on both the bare bulb and the Fresnel head? I would expect that the use of a double diffuser instead f a single would also make an important difference in output power. So maybe the bare bulb would not need a double diffuser and recover a bit more of the power loss?
Hey @Pascal Hibon, I did use a double diffuser for both, mainly because when doing tests like this, the conditions need to be controlled. The point wasn't to try to match outputs, but to measure the amount of output from both options under the same conditions. I've also done tests on single layer versus double diffusion and their is a difference in the quality of light, so using one diffuser to "match" the output of the fresnel head wouldn't be a viable option for many.
The bare bulb should be used with just one layer of diffusion, not two, hence the difference in the output
@@carlosandreviana9448 as I mentioned in my reply to the OP, the point of the test wasn’t to match output, but to see how both options performed under similar conditions.
@@AnthonyToglife I know, but it would be interesting to check the output quality and strength of the bare bulb with just one diffuser
@@carlosandreviana9448 duly noted, I’ll test and report back!

Hey Anthony, great video. I know it's an old video but had a question, when measuring light output in the modifiers did they both have a deflector or was the bare build the only one with a deflector.
Hey @norman brown, they both had a deflector. I typically always use it but when I do any sort of test/comparison, I always make sure the conditions are the same. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Anthony. I did photography for 15yrs before I took a 6yr break, I'm getting back in to it and EVERYTHING has changed. Lumadyne, Quantum (Q flash) and Alien bee were really your only reasonably priced battery powered units... Keep the great videos coming..
@@normanbrown495 yesss, I would definitely say a lot changed over the course of the last 6 years. Welcome back!
What's the best way to add gels when using a bare bulb?
You have to get gels designed for “studio” lighting, otherwise you would be very likely to burn a whole through it, or worse, it could catch fire. But in terms of how to actually use the gel, the easiest way is to gaffer tape the gel to the inside of your modifier in front of the bulb. If that’s not possible due to their being no good place to tape the gel to, you can just wrap the gel around the bare bulb. Again, you want a gel made specifically for this use case as they’re designed to withstand heat.
Great straight to the point video, & Ive been using my AD200 pro for probably a year and almost NEVER use the Fresnel head lol & got curious, I think we use the same modifier if thats the Godox collapsible beauty dish... and what Ive learned is that Ive probably been missing out on some power when shooting outside by not using that fresnel. Ill watch out for hotspots & color cast can be fixed in post , but im def gonna try that fresnel head soon !
It's always interesting to hear how other folks use the same thing @Kayotified, for the longest time I only used the fresnel head, lol. It was more so out of habit/laziness haha. That beauty dish is the Glow EZ Lock brand, likely very similar to the Godox one.
@@AnthonyToglife Sorry , mine is also the Glow EZ one , im so used to saying Godox everything lol but I do find that interesting as well
which btw i just watched a video on a guy using the godox ad-s7 reflector on his ad200 & im gonna try that as well becuase its collecting dust. Maybe you should make a vid on the different modifiers you've used. I typically keep the GlowEZ beauty dish on & it might be time to switch it up. I been thinking about Umbrellas too 🤔
Ad-S2* is what i meant , it came with the pro package from amazon
Hi Anthony. At what zoom level did you set the fresnel head? Thanks.
Hi @Antonio Piñera, it was set to 24mm.
Could you please confirm if you used a reflective plate when doing your test?
Hey @Dany J. Mendez I did NOT use a deflector plate in the beauty dish as I wanted to this comparison to be applicable to all modifiers, not just those with a plate. The modifier was double-diffused, however.
Damn bro….are you a photographer, or a football player? 😄
@Rillages 😂😂😂 can I be both? Lolol.
So if you using a AD-b2 your getting the best of both. Even light with power. Because them 10s will then be 20s right ? Or is it not that simple?
@Amerson Griffin I'm assuming you're referring to the meter readings? Using the AD-B2 wouldn't necessarily turn those 10's into 20's, because a big part of the fresnel head hitting 20 in the center is more because the fresnel head concentrates the light. Bare bulb doesn't have that light concentration so it's not as simple as doubling the readings.
@@AnthonyToglife Ooh okay gotcha well I have them both now just thinking on how I should take advantage of both. But you should definitely do more video on the ad-b2 because there’s definitely not enough videos out. I feel like having two ad-200s pros top the AD600 and 400. Because you can use them separate like having one in front of your subject and have a back light. And if you are in the sun you can use them together.
Great video, so you mean that the round Godox v1 shape would be the Best of both worlds? Round, more even and more power efficient.
@jedailprod I'm not sure I understand your reference to the V1, it's half the power of an AD200...
I think he means the round head like the V1 that's available for the AD200
How about round head H200Rvs bare bulb?
I unfortunately don't have a round head to test with @Pururoy but I feel the results would be roughly the same.
I bought the ad 200 pro today. When I turn it on it constantly makes a clicking sound. Does anyone have the same problem?
I don't have the Pro version @Marijana Zorkic but I've never experienced any clicking sounds with mine. Is it a constant clicking sound? How frequent? How loud?
Did anyone test it with the round fresnel? I would think that it would be more even.
I have not but the round head wouldn't be much different than the regular fresnel head when shooting into a modifier. It likely would change the pattern of the hot spot but you're still going to have a brighter light in the center than on the edges.
I can’t even use my bare bulb because it won’t fit in the socket. I’m afraid to apply more pressure for fear of breaking it
@michaeltuffin8147 when you say "it won't fit in the socket" are you referring to the actual bulb or the head itself fitting on the AD200?
@@AnthonyToglife I wonder if they aren't lining up the red dots as the pins are in different sizes to ensure a specific orientation.
@@opx4real I'm thinking they were referring to the actual head itself, as I had that problem as well in the beginning. The female holes on the head didn't quite line up with the male prongs on the AD200 itself; I had to manually adjust the positions to get them to line up.
That’s so weird. The bare vs fresnel on another TH-camr was exactly the opposite. I’m guessing it’s the umbrella that can change the amount of light being spread.
What, exactly, was the opposite? I don’t remember everything from this video…
@@AnthonyToglife the examples off the pair of soft-box. There’s another video out there I just saw a week ago and it’s exactly the opposite. The shadows the flash create between the bare bulb vs the frez. It’s nothing you did. I’m wondering if it’s the umbrella itself.
I wouldn’t recommend using double diffusion with the bulb head
Why is that?
It adds an extra layer making the flash darker in the center than around the edges. You can clearly see it
@@nerdynautilus5373 this is not true at all, and the meter readings prove that. It only appears darker in the center in the video because I had to expose to shown the spread. The center was still 1/3 of a stop brighter than the edges with the bare bulb.
Why is it that Rob Hall in his video states that the fresnel head produces only 1/10 more power than the bare bulb. When by design, the lenses of the fresnel head concentrate the light making it way more efficient than the bare bulb as demonstrated in your test
I can't comment on that @YogaLifeEtc because I don't know what video you're referring to, and Rob Hall is damn good at testing. If I had to guess, he likely metered the heads bare, meaning without any modifier in front of them. In my case, in using the modifier, it's very likely the modifier itself intensified the light from the fresnel head, creating a bigger difference between the two. I will test this later without a modifier to see what results I get, and I'll report back.
Heat and durability are the main reason I go with fresnel head over bare bulb. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve dropped my light stand. I will be using the bulbs soon with the ad-b2 though.
I can definitely understand this @J Shot Productions, although I will say that bare bulb is tougher than one may think.
Great video!
Thank you so much @andrewade7017
