EVERY Photographer/Videographer NEEDS This Light! Okay, Maybe. | Zhiyun Cinepeer CF100
#photographyforbeginners #photographytips #zhiyun
I've long been a fan of stick and tube lights mainly for their ease of use, portability, and ability to put them in tight spaces without much effort. In this video, I'm giving my thoughts on the Zhiyun Cinepeer CF100, a 100-watt stick light that packs quite a punch.
*UPDATE:* The light can accept both PD and DC. Although PD won't give you an unlimited amount of use as a DC cord will, PD is an option to extend the usage in certain situations. You would want to use a power bank that can deliver at least 100W.

Reminds me of the old days when we used nylon stocking over the front of lens, also star filters give a similar effect plus star ray on high light sources. Nice video thanks for sharing.
Finally! You made the best video for DOF.
Definitely learning a lot from this
Great video, such a shame it doesn't have more views. So diffused is the opposite of specular , and soft is the opposite of hard. but you can have hard diffused just like you can have soft specular
Anthony, this was very informative. Others propose achieving the correct skin tone through a numerical approach. Consider creating a supplementary video to explore this method in more detail and enhance the overall content? 👌
Brilliant video
Thank you !!!!
the 5d mark iv is still a formidable camera today in my opinion. I guess the new tech makes it easier but photography is a skill set to where you should still get great pictures on new as well as old technology. The camera companies have gotten just like the phone companies where they are constantly making new models to get us to spend our money. But I don't think you really need to if you master the camera that you have. I love how durable the 5d Mark IV is too
Nailed it. Thank you, Sir. Perfectly explained.

Very good video man!
Thank you so much!
I’m so glad Neewer went from a company that in the early days only rebranded other companies’ products to a company that manufactures their own. The Q4 looks legit.
I agree! Their products are definitely much more solid/robust today than they were in the past. I have so much random Neewer stuff too. They make a LOT of stuff.
@ Yip. Your vid has definitely encouraged me to look into their products more.
Great video! Do you think that the modeling light on the Q200 is bright enough, that when shooting through a soft box, a model's pupils will close enough? I want to use this for indoor work but I hate when the model has fish eyes due to no modeling light or low power modeling light. Thank you.
Maaaan I dunno. It's only 30W so bare, I could see it being useful. Through a softbox, it's possible but it would depend on the size of your softbox. I just had an interview setup today and I was using a 150W light; I had to have it set to 90% to expose for my subject. Now obviously for what you're talking about, you don't need it bright enough to be your key, but 30W just isn't a lot of power when being pushed through a softbox. To answer your question though, I think it can be bright enough but it depends on the size of your softbox, the number of diffusion layers you have, and how far/close the modifier is to your subject.
I’m confused is the white less powerful than the silver?
Because silver is more reflective, it yields a half to full stop brighter light. In other words, at the same exact flash power, a silver-lined interior will be brighter than white, generally.
@ is it enough of a difference where it would make sense to return the white and get the silver? I shoot outside and it’s fairly easy to get the switch done
@ yes and no. Does it make much of a difference if my flash power is 1/8 vs 1/16, not really. But when you need that extra half or full stop, it’s worth having silver. I always buy silver but there’s definitely a benefit in having white if you shoot without diffusion.
I really had no idea how much of a difference this made untill I saw your comparison at bout 2:16. Hitting up Urth for a 62mm before your video even finishes.
Yeah, it absolutely makes a difference, lol.
Man I just splurged on Neewer gear this holiday season because of their sales. I picked up two of their new 300B lights and their projector LS-38. May go ahead and grab some filters also. Their quality has definitely improved on time.
I have the 150B and I love that thing! I do want to pick up that projector though, please do let me know your thoughts on it!!
i don't use flash with natural light, but its something I wanted to learn, just in case. I prefer the magazine look of natural light, and `if they used flash invisbily, then i want to do it as well
This is a great technique to know, even if it's something you won't use often. When you need it, you'll be glad you know how to do it!
Great work man. Whenever I buy beauty dishes I typically lean towards white interiors!
I can definitely see having white in a beauty dish; my smaller metal beauty dish has a white interior. I think I need to start using bare modifiers more in '25!
🤌🏾
Thank you!
Cool images with the different color modifier interiors, the Silver one does have good balance in light and shadow. Great video!
Thank you Agnetha!
I'm glad you added the sheet with this. Because I'm curious about the flash powers. I've got an idea of where it is going to be but am curious if I'm right. Thank Anthony.
Yeah, I knew that info would be asked for, lol. It actually was last minute to even right it down; I took the first shot and was like "I should probably track this."
My favorite photographer/videographer in Las Vegas. Hands down! His demeanor on these videos is the same in person: cool, calm and collected.
Ayeeeee I appreciate that so much my guy! Thank you!!
I think there's a significant difference between silver and white without diffusion. With diffusion, the difference is practically minimal with the silver modifier having ever so slightly more contrast. But I agree that it's not that significant once the diffusers are used. I just think it's super hilarious that the BlackDish has the hardest light with the deepest shadows in the bare shots without plates or diffusion because Brandon Cole, in video after video, repeatedly spewed misinformation about the black interior giving the softest light with less highlights (which a lot of us knew was garbage from the get go anyhow lol). Not what I saw in your comparison here LOL. And you really see what I'm talking about when you compared the modifiers in their bare forms. Another thing is that everyone I've seen talking about using the BlackDish so far doesn't use the black dish it comes with as it already robs you of at least 2 to 3 stops of light. Man, the light from the BlackDish with the deflector plate alone looked abysmal. I really have a feeling nobody is using in that configuration after some testing LOL. I just thought of something - I wonder what the light from the BlackDish would look like with a silver deflector plate. Probably like crap still lol. Thanks for this vid. Great content, as usual. Happy Christmas Eve and Happy New Year!
I've never really found there to be a significant difference, but I also think it depends on the modifier. With these beauty dishes, it's damn near the same, but with a true parabolic modifier, silver seems to be a bit punchier. At the end of the day I think it's only really noticeable when being able to compare images side by side. Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Wow that black modifier with the deflector plate gives a very different look! Given the modifier is positioned camera left it's odd that the light looks like it was shot with the modifier camera right instead when you look at the falloff on the model. I'd have never predicted a result like that. As for the rest they do look largely similar when diffusion is added or if the modifier is bare. My modifiers are all silver for the same reason as you cited here, you get a bit more output for a given flash power. Looking forward to more in 2025, happy new year 🎉😊
I was quite surprised as well. When I initially tested the Black Dish, I had it positioned in the standard beauty dish positioning, so I didn't notice this. I thought the exact same thing, it looked like I had the modifier placed camera right and not camera left. It was odd and really threw me for a loop, but shot after shot, I got the same result.
@AnthonyToglife I'd say it could be a good look if you want something very different from the norm. I guess this is why experimentation is a good thing, you discover things purely by accident that you can use in a live shoot some day 😊
Awesome video, well explained. I've been struggling with this.
I'm happy this video was helpful for you! Happy new year!
Thank you for this info. It seems to me that just about everyone is using these filters nowadays. The K&F one seems to be reasonably priced so I may have to check it out and if I hate it I'm not out too much money.
I've been using my K&F VND's for a good two years now, I've never had any issues. I think you'll be good to go with their filters provided you get the higher end ones. I can't speak for their lower tier filters.
Happy new year, Anthony!
Thank you! Happy New Year to you as well.
Great...
Thank you, thank you!
Only commenting for the algorithm...Good stuff as always. Add your camera settings with the shot, that's always helpful to the viewer!
Thank you @koolhand12, I appreciate it. As to the camera settings, you won’t find them in my vids as I don’t feel they add value. The settings I needed to get my exposure aren’t universal and providing them gives beginners the perception that those settings is what they should use to achieve the same.
I 100% agree that this would probably be the only reason I haven't gotten rid of the BlackDish yet. I totally agree with you that ND filters, gaff tape and all that stuff is much more hassle that is completely unnecessary sometimes if you have something like the Blackdish. It really would come in handy for being able to knock down some power, which is an annoying issue sometimes. This vid made me think I made the right decision in keeping it. So thanks!
@@jasonbodden8816 yeah G, tools, right?! These days I don’t feel like doing anything more that what’s absolutely necessary 😂😂
@ I hear that!! 😂
Always a joy to learn. Thank you.
I appreciate you my friend, thank you!
Good tips and demonstration. Great video. I wish you a Happy New Year!
Thank you so much Agnetha! Happy new year to you as well!
Great idea for a tutorial. Lots of tutorials show how to set up off camera flashes but very few explain how to make the flash exposure fit in the scene. So yeah if the ambient is casting soft shadows then ideally your key light should create similar shadow fall off on your subject. Likewise if the ambient scene has very defined crisp shadows then it makes sense to have your subject lit similarly. Colour temp is also important to match and can be done easily using gels on the strobe or flash. Look forward to more of the same in 2025 😊
I actually touched on color temperature in the original video as I was shooting during golden hour, but it didn't make it into the third iteration hahaha. I definitely will having a lot more vids like this coming in 2025! Cheers good sir!
Always a good lesson!
I appreciate you G!
Just a quick tip here for you Anthony, but if the weight that you added was immersed into the water, then it's effective weight is about 50% of it's actual weight, so maybe double the weight next time.

Wow, that is so totally cool You got Neewer off camera flash. Awesome video!

@@AnthonyToglife Happy Holidays!
The real difference might be in the fallout outside the area illumination. If you are in a small room does it affect the rest of the room the same? You can also be closer to you subject with a parabolic. Subtle differences sure, but most light modifiers have very subtle differences
True indeed, most modifiers do only offer subtle differences which, for most people, are either unnoticeable or without impact. But, if you're one of those photographers needing that subtle difference for whatever reason, you may have a point here.
Great video, man -- thanks! I haven't had a ton of use with Neewer strobes. Just last week, during a shoot in-studio, I saw a couple of Neewer's but those weren't strobes, but continuous. I'll definitely check em out. Fun fact -- my love of the Godox AD400s started with a really good review you did (some time ago) and I've been using those exclusively ever since -- so if you're endorsing the Neewer Q4 that tells me it's rock-solid and worth a look. Great job, my friend -- Happy Holidays!
I appreciate those words my friend, and you know me well enough to know I wouldn't put something in front of y'all that I couldn't stand behind myself. I really hope to meet you in person some time in 2025, it has to happen!
@@AnthonyToglife Absolutely! We'll make that happen for sure.
Defraction and depth of field calculations are things I've never heard of in my 1.5 years of getting serious with photography. Thank you!! New sub!
Happy to help you learn something new!
Are Godox and Neewer the same thing just marketed under different names??
I can’t say with absolute certainty but I would say no. They’re products aren’t near identical like brands that do that.
Nice little video. I too am interested in your evaluation of the Q200. There’s been little buzz about it on TH-cam, though MarkusPix’s evaluation intrigued me (full disclosure, I picked one up during Black Friday but haven’t had time to put it through its paces - my only issue is the size of the plug if one needs to use a separate trigger, to incorporate it in with another system). Godox (and Phottix) started the same way NEEWER did, rebranding gear. It’s good to see NEEWER evolve too.
The Q200 is relatively new, so yes, there isn't much content on it. I am definitely going to be doing a review video on it, but I want to try to get a loaner Q3 to use in my comparison. Question, what are you referring to when you say "the size of the plug"?
@ The sync cord size. Alien Bees used oversized ones, most everyone else used plugs the size of a standard headphone jack. The Q200 uses one the size of the Olympus mini jack. I happen to have one of those cords (I forget if it was for early Godox or Cactus) but it’s not something readily available.
@@earlekimel7771 the only port the Q200 has is a USB-C port, meant for charging. I don't think there's a way to trigger the Q200 via cable...
@@AnthonyToglifeJust checked my manual for confirmation. Literally next to the USBC port is the 2.5mm sync jack.
@@earlekimel1955 ha, that hole was so small I just thought it was for the guide pin of the flap/cover, lol.
I was using Neewer, then went to godox. Since the Q4 released, I went full Neewer, sold all my godox. Looking to replace my Q3 200w strobes with the q200
I’m gonna see if my rep can loan me a Q3 to do a comparison video with the Q200. I have to admit I don’t like their naming convention; the Q200 should be the Q2 Mark II and the Q3 being the original Q2, or something along those lines.
This just sounds like a Neweer commercial where you're not trying to offend Godox in case they want to sponsor you. 😂😂 I can dig it.
I’m not the least bit concerned about a Godox sponsorship Mr. Johnson, but thank you for your assessment.
@AnthonyToglife Nobody is until they are Mr. Toglife. 👍🏿
In the past, I stayed away from this brand. Also, I use Godox and it's been great. I have a lot of their lights, so pretty heavily invested. That said, I recently purchased a Newwer aluminum travel tripod. This tripod was purchased for a very specific reason. I need a light tripod just to hold a smatphone, a smartphone with a phone gimbal or a Sony ZV-1 compact camera. It is never used to hold expensive mirrorless cameras, so it never needs to support much more than 1lb. I have a very expensive professional tripod (over 1k) for that purpose. The other purpose of this tripod is to be cheap and "disposable" If it gets lost or stolen it's not a big deal. I have actually had both happen 😮! So, I recently purchased a Neewer LT7 tripod for this purpose. My older cheap one was falling apart and was always a little annoying to use. I saw the Neewer on sale for $50 and decided to give it a try. It's far cheaper than my previous one ( $150 five years ago) and to my surprise, far better. I was shocked at how stable it was (not really a big requirement tbh) and it worked smoothly compared to my previous cheap tripod(s). After using it for the last couple months its become one of my favorite pieces of gear! Everytime I use it I am shaking my head in disbelief that it was such a bargain! Clearly Neewer is making some great products now, so I will at least consider the brand for future purchases. Probably not lighting though. It would be expensive to switch and the Godox equipment has vastly exceeded my expectations.
I totally understand not switching, IMHO it wouldn’t make financial sense to do so given the Godox lights being damn good. But I can definitely say Neewer has stepped up their game and I absolutely think they’re moving in the right direction. I tend to akin companies to us as people. When O was in my teens and twenties, I did a lot of dumb things. It would be unfortunate for people to judge me today based on the dumb stuff I did back then. Companies sometimes should be afforded the same grace. Neewer is consistently showing that they’re putting out better products than they did 10 years ago, that counts for something.
@@AnthonyToglifeI really love this response! I wouldn't want to be judged by my early twenties. I was clueless at best 😮. Neewer has clearly upped their game and I will consider buying gear from them in the future. As you said, like people, companies do grow up and get better.
When I started photography my first big boy strobe to me was the Neewer 400. It worked when I started and it was portable. The reason I switched was easier portability at the time and lighter products. But Neewer has been good to me.
Yup, I absolutely get that, and portability is something I think people tend to downplay or not think about. If it’s difficult to move around with your gear, that’s just as much an issue as the gear itself being inadequate. I’m looking forward to seeing what gear Neewer brings out in 2025.
Thanks for making a fair and transparent video about switching lighting brands. Not sure if a Neewer rep can answer questions about future products, but I’ll ask anyway. Is a 600 watt wireless strobe on the road map? If they already have one, I’ve missed it. A 600 watt strobe with the Q4’s form factor or even smaller and lighter weight would be really intriguing to me. I don’t expect it to happen soon, but any company that can fit a 600 watt strobe into an AD200-style form factor could have a bestseller on their hands. Also, is Neewer developing a small touchscreen flash trigger like the Godox X3? Both of those could win over photographers to their brand. Thanks for all you do.
Great questions @MarcusSortijas, I will definitely run these by my rep. They don't currently have a 600w wireless strobe but I'll find out if one is on the roadmap. I agree, having something like a 600w strobe in an AD200-style form factor would be cool - but - the battery life would be atrocious. I think we would need battery technology to advance quite a bit before we see something like this. I do know Neewer is working on some triggers but I don't know if they're touchscreen. I'll also run this by my rep as well and get back to you. Can you provide me an email address so I can send you the answers directly? Sometimes TH-cam doesn't notify people when I respond to comments.
Hi. Thank you for your interest in our products and for your valuable feedback. We are pleased to inform you that the Neewer Q6 is currently in the trial production phase and is expected to be available for shipment next month. We are excited about this new addition to our lineup and believe it will meet the needs of our customers. And the development of the trigger is also underway, but its progressing is slower than Q6. Thank you once again for your support and for sharing your thoughts with us.
@@NeewerOfficial please email me at AnthonyToglife@gmail.com and let's discuss some content for the Q6.
