- The 2019 Corvette C7 ZR1 (~$240,000 CAD current market price, ~$165,000 USD current market price) is said to be the last swan song of the front-engine Corvette layout. Before making their switch to mid-engine for the C8, Chevy decided to throw everything at their last beastly C7. It can reach a top speed of 341 kph (212 mph) thanks to its 6.2 L supercharged V8, which stands so tall it needs a shaker hood just so it can fit. Thomas and James put this absolute weapon to the test on the Throttle House Test Track. Let’s see what they think! SUBSCRIBE!

The viper has been out of production for nearly 6 years now (2017 model years were made in 2016) and new cars are still hunting them trying to catch up. Such an amazing car. Wish it could come back.
Plus it borderline matched the BAC Mono they tested which is just strictly for track use!
Oh and the fact that the ACR is in a manual makes it great
The ZR1 was NEVER made to rival the ACR. Chevy customers would not buy a harsh track car, so Chevy wasn't gonna build one. The ZR1 is a comfy grand tourer with adaptive suspension and a fair bit of aero. It's more of a middle ground between an Aston Martin DBS Superleggera and a Viper ACR.
@@aaronvector4750 chevy stated a goal for a sub 7:00 Nurburgring time when in development of this car, the main focus of the car is to be a track performance car, not a grand tourer with a massive wing on it lmao
@@aaronvector4750 According to Road and Track, for the Ring, Mero ran a time of 7:06 but they didn't make it official because the goal was under 7. They are less than 4 seconds apart at The Ring, Dunnville, Willow Springs and Laguna Seca. ZR1 is faster at Road Atlanta and VIR. 15 team championships, 14 manufacturers and drivers titles along with 113 IMSA race victories including 8 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 30 wins in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship, 82 in the American Le Mans Series and 1 in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. No team in IMSA history has won more races or championships than Corvette Racing.
@@voss9933 Incorrect. In fact, Chevy never intended for any of the 7th generation vettes to post official nurburgring times, so they never did. The only times we have is from when Jim Mero went full send while the car was still in development and not even fully dialed in yet. The Viper GTS-R team are the only Americans that stated they wanted to get under 7 minutes at the ring. Have you even seen the reviews and comparisons? The ZR1 is even more of a grand tourer than the ZL1 1LE and C7 Z06, let alone the Viper ACR which is nearly impossible to drive on the road without having a backache.

agreed, I feel like a lot of the car community overlooks suspension components when comparing cars. acceleration is always everyone’s selling point. as someone who’s owned cars that can be luxury comfort, brute speed, and track monster… I appreciate the handling aspect of cars a lot more
One of My best friends just died in one of these cars. It was dream car. This is as beautiful expression of a vehicle as he was a human. Thank you for a gorgeous video of a Vehicle that does it service, that shows the expression of a car that a properly crazy man would love. I drove a C5 today. Even that car reminded me of how special the Corvette is. They are amazing cars for the price of entry.

I have a supercharged c5 on water meth. It is an insane daily driver for me to be honest. Makes everything fun (except speed bumps) anytime you have to drive.
I have a C5, 6 speed convertible. An absolute blast to drive.

It’s not gonna be the same. Not supercharged, twin-turbo’d
C6 ZR1 not much different. C5 Z06 w/ a cam/blower/suspension/cooling mods….lighter/faster, C6Z is a different animal anyhow & can be made into a N/A monster. The C7 vette in general did nothing to change the game other than fancy cute interior & edgier sheet metal….throw a C5/C6/C7 up on a lift & walk underneath….they’re all essentially the same damn design lol. The C8 was overdue, the C7 is a stop gap measure.

@@derakbell8143: The ZR1's horsepower and torque exceed the limits of the 10-speed automatic. I believe there were also packaging concerns, as the Corvette features a rear-mounted transmission.
This configuration of the 8-speed is unique to the Corvette. It is entirely because it is a transaxle (rear mounted). The [Ford] 10-speed can handle over 1,200 ft-lbs of torque. Would the 10-speed be better than GM's regular 8-speed, yes, but because the 8-speed can be a transaxle, the improved handling is more than work the tradeoff.

@@danieljohnson4418 its most definitely just a packaging concern. The 10 speeds are holding up to continued abuse in upper 800 wheel HP Mustangs and Camaros and yes, it is the same trans. Ford/GM corporate cobuild.
Mark my words, in about 20-30 years here - the C7 ZR1 will go down as a highly collectable Corvette legend for two main reasons - 1) It's the last high-performance variant of the front-engine ICE Vettes and 2) They only made this car for one MY - 2019, so it is pretty rare here, only 2,953 were made..! :-)

I think both are great, carwow does better casual car reviews, especially with normal cars. TH makes better performance cars reviews and obviously the track tests are awesome.

ZR1 vs ACR would be a tough choice for me. I haven't priced them out recently but if there is a substantial price difference I'd pick the cheaper of the two but if similar prices then it would be the viper and that's coming from someone with a C7 and a C3 in the garage...the ACR just presses some buttons that the ZR1 doesn't but both are amazing cars IMO
Around this course, The ACR basically has the same time as a BAC mono and faster than a brand new 992 GT3. Let that sink in. That's with a 6 speed manual, not some dual clutch magic transmission like the PDK.
You missed your chance to buy an ACR they've practically doubled in price, but you can buy a non ACR Viper for less money than a ZR1 and just buy an aero kit for the Viper instead of paying twice as much for the ACR

The Viper, yes.
The ZR1? No.
There are numerous cars that are more suited for the track. 911 GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 RS for example. I'd even go as far as saying the Cayman GT4 is better suited for a track due to its mid-engine layout. And I'm not even going down the route of cars like the Huracan Performante, Aventador SVJ, AMG GT Black Series or the Ford GT.
So although the Viper ACR has a place among the best track suited vehicles of all time, the ZR1 definitely not, but that will change with the new C8 ZR1

C7 ZR1 exterior will ALWAYS look so much better than the C8 models, despite the performance upgrades that I’m sure the new one will have. That side profile & just overall look is too stunning!

The c8 is quicker and faster than a c5, that combined with a dual clutch, the c8 would objectively be more responsive and puts the power down much better than a c5... idk why there is so much hate for the c8 when it is actually a beast. That being said, the c8 Z06 version also eats a c5 for breakfast. It wouldn't even be close with that variant of the c8. These mid engine vettes are scary quick for a sub 100k sports car.
*To think the base C8 Stingray matches the C7 ZR1’s 0-60 time. Imagine what the C8 Z06 will bring to the plate.*

Great review!!! I have the same car (same colour but M7) and love it. When doing your hot lap you have mentioned all the nannies were turned off but did you try doing some laps with PTM on??? PTM could help even a pro driver turn better lap times than with everything switched off.
I'm not sure about your comment about C7 ZR1's being cheaper to purchase in the US vs. Canada in the current market situation and exchange rates. Yes there are more of them in the states but down there they are also going for around US$170-190k (can be even more if low mileage and M7 and with all the desirable options). Factor in exchange, shipping and getting it compliant to Canadian transport laws + paying all taxes and customs fees etc etc it could work out to be more expensive than a Canadian vehicle if one is available locally.
James is really getting good at estimating those lap times!

This vette zr1 and the acr are the last of an era. Two raw machines rady to destroy the track whithout fancy stuff and only with two big wing and a massive glorious engines.
Remeber this, in 20 years we will remeber this cars just like the shelby cobra´s of the 21st century.
For a 5 year old car being able to absolutely dominate most new super cars double its price, the ZR1 is a phenomenal bargain for what it delivers: excellent cornering, lightning lap times, high power and quite possibly the angriest sound I’ve ever heard a car make. Hats off to you Chevy for this Jack of all trades

The new gt3 base model with a manual runs the same Nurburgring time as the acr viper lol except the gt3 has way less horsepower than the acr viper and still does as good and it’s not even the track version.

Which is crazy for a car that barely has any power, barely has any down force. The viper has way more down force and power yet slower lap time than an N/a 6 cylinder Porsche

Great job on this guys! Love the ZR1 but wished this had the manual 6 speed to truly compare it to the ACR Viper. Not sure why you would get the automatic. The automatic transmission will date the car unlike the manual. I miss these two drivers cars. The ZR1 definitely wins in the sound category. Brutal

The mid engined C8 models (Z06 & ZR1) will not make this corvette obsolete. When optioned correctly (manual shifter) this is the pinnacle of pure raw American muscle. It takes no outside influence from other car culture. They threw a massive V8 under the hood, threw a massive supercharger on it and called it a day after adding some track performance bits. It’s front engine, rear wheel drive, manual shifter, 755 HP whining V8 with uninterrupted quad pipes out the rear will always be desired by enthusiasts, the C8 is good, but it’s a Ferrari with a American V8. It’s not pure. This is pure. Just like the ACR.
Not to mention that this is the last of a dying breed. The C7 had been worked on for a decade, this is the final iteration of that. Meaning, for 10 years they tweaked and modified the C7, and this is the final product. The Corvette in its most intense, and purest form. Unmatched. Unrivaled. Cemented in history as one of the all time greats of track performance.

cars like the S550 Mustang GT500 are essentially the same thing as this. A front engine rear wheel drive American supercharged V8 muscle car (preferably manual) and they will never be obsolete, they will always be desired by enthusiast because they are just so fun to drive fast.

I dunno, I leave my ZR1 in full automatic. After the warm up lap it seems to have figured out when to hold gears and so on. But it does initially act a bit “dumb” till it figures out you are driving it at a track.
That's probably a safety feature so folks don't break it until it's warmed up. I don't know, just my thoughts.
I love manuals but with this much power to control I’d definitely choose the auto.
I love Yuri but throttle house is a little better than straight pipes 😭
I guess it comes down to two things: the personalities of the hosts and production quality. Thomas and James are objectively more fun. They manage to crack the audience every time. And the editing is top notch. They deserve much more subs.

2019 ZR1 with these same options now selling for about $180k US with a couple of thousand miles on them. Go up in miles to around 15k, and they're selling for $160k - which is $20k more than new. Still, thanks to Biden tanking the economy, these will sooner or later come down further in value.

My favourite car channel by far. It used to be Chris Harris when he did it himself without top gear. But the fact that these guys have a genuine friendship and nothing is artificially scripted (see every top gear episode after the Clarkson geenration...it was BAD trying to get a new trio to work)
These guys are true car nerds being idiots while doing great reviews. Also if a negative is there they'll tell you. Honesty is important I don't need another supercar blondie bullshit influencer that doesn't even test cars.

Awesome as always. Not sure if it's just me, but the shaking transitions seemed a bit much. I like the idea, but it was at a level that was distracting for me. Just some feedback, loved the video as always.

Fun fact, the 2019 ZR1 with a manual has a faster time around Willow Springs track than the exact same car with an automatic.
Even though the automatic shifts faster, the manual provides superior control of the car and for a skilled driver when he enters a turn with a manual transmission, he can push both the clutch, gas and brake to put the car in neutral and keep the engine revs up, so when he exits the turn and puts the car back in gear, it has more power from the elevated engine RPM and exits the turn faster then the automatic car can.
An automatic simply can't do this, and so the manual version of the car exits faster out of every corner resulting in a faster lap time.
That’s all true, but unless you’re a race car driver and 100% in tune with the ZR1 as a manual, the auto will probably perform better for most people.
@@DeathByLego it only takes a couple days at the track to master it. I think most people try to defend the auto because they don't know how to drive manual and have no one to teach them.
