Revolvers were a major innovation in firearms technology, and they played a significant role in military and civilian life from their invention in the early 1800s to the present day.
In this video, we will take a look at the evolution of revolvers from 1814 to 1900. We will discuss the early designs, the development of new technologies, and the most popular revolvers of the era.
Early Revolvers
The first revolver was invented by Samuel Colt in 1836. Colt's Paterson Revolver was a six-shot revolver that used a cap-and-ball ignition system. The Paterson Revolver was not a commercial success, but it paved the way for future revolvers.
In 1847, Colt introduced the Colt Walker. The Walker was a larger and more powerful revolver than the Paterson, and it was designed for use by the US Army in the Mexican-American War. The Walker was not as successful as Colt had hoped, but it helped to establish the revolver as a viable military weapon.
Development of New Technologies
In the late 1800s, a number of new technologies were developed that revolutionized revolver design. One of the most important innovations was the development of metallic cartridges. Metallic cartridges were more reliable and easier to load than the cap-and-ball ignition system, and they quickly became the standard for revolvers.
Another important innovation was the development of double-action revolvers. Double-action revolvers allowed the user to cock and fire the revolver with a single pull of the trigger. This made revolvers much faster to fire than previous designs.
Popular Revolvers of the Era
Some of the most popular revolvers of the era included:
Colt Single Action Army: The Colt Single Action Army, also known as the Peacemaker, was the most popular revolver of the American Wild West. It was used by cowboys, outlaws, and lawmen alike.
Smith & Wesson Model 2: The Smith & Wesson Model 2 was a double-action revolver that was introduced in 1861. It was one of the first successful double-action revolvers, and it was widely used by both military and civilian users.
Webley Revolver: The Webley Revolver was a British revolver that was first introduced in 1854. It was used by the British military for over 100 years, and it was also popular with civilian users around the world.
Conclusion
Revolver technology evolved rapidly from 1814 to 1900. By the end of the era, revolvers were reliable, powerful, and easy to use weapons. They were used by militaries and civilians around the world, and they played a significant role in shaping the modern world.

Colt Single Action 1872 will last forever as "the Western revolver". Has a line that is a simple beauty.
sure dear sir
Kinda funny how no one knows it creator but it’s the most iconic gun in western time and movies
1873
@WorldDataList-tc9gf Single Action Army 1873 not 1872

Exactly!
The author of the video is a cretin who is wrong about such well-known things.
All I know is God made man, but Sam Colt made ‘em equal

Equally dead by inventing a disgusting death tool? Yeah pretty much
@@Dannymart_88445 would it make you feel better if people were only killed with sticks and stones?
Prior to sidearms, people were at the mercy of those with strength and skill to wield edged or blunt weapons, and only those with similar strength or skill could defend themselves or others.
With a pistol, even a small, elderly, or weak person could defend themselves. That’s why the above expression exists.
@lornenoland8098 let me think of something smart to say and then I'll get back at this argument okay? Its gonna take me some time
@@Dannymart_88445naw...don't even bother...
We free men have better things to discuss ...
Samul colt is called father of revolver because he made more revolver models then others
yes sir
Not even revolvers either that man and his company have had their hands in American firearm production from then until now though it's no longer an American owned company since 2021
@@shadow_b0itrash415the last great products by colt are Python/anaconda. They just kept producing the same m4 for years without any upgrade plus some meh pistols. S&W is much innovative since the second half 20th century and better today
Colt fronted the money and marketed the gun, he had very little to do with the design.
I believe you are about five years early on dating the Smith & Wesson Model #3. It was actually developed around 1870 and was, three years before the Colt Single action, adopted by the U.S. Army as it's first large caliber metallic cartridge service pistol. Thanks for an interesting spread.
thank a lot dear
thanks a lot
What in the world was going on in 1860?
@@busara45thevillain22civil war
S&M model 3 came in 1870 and the Colt SAA came in 1873. And the Schofield variant of the S&M model 3 (which deserves its own spot) came out in 1875.
I wondered about the Schofield. Why wasn't it on the list.
Colt SAA AKA Peacemaker of 1873 with .45 Colt cartridges in a 6-shot cylinder.
SURE SIR
@@WorldDataList-tc9gf William Mason designed the Colt SAA and Elisha Root developed the 1855 Sidehammer revolver not Sam Colt.
You forgot the S&W M3 Schofield

That wasn’t a Schofield man, heck I’m not even sure that was the right picture.
@@christophercarter6301 It is an M3 Schofield dude

I wish to meet Samuel Colt one day, cool guy.
ohh sure my dear
There was so many good options and still are for revolvers but my favorite will always be the Smith and Wesson model 10 38 special. The K Frame is such a perfect balance and the 38 Special is a great cartridge.

you are a good man, Arthur Morgan

Faltó el Colt New Navy de 1889. El primer swing out Cylinder double Action como los conocemos hoy día.
thank a lot my dear
@CristobalCampbell-wu7fu El de 1892 fue el Colt Army que vino después. Primero fue el Navy de 1889. De esos dos revolveres hubo como 9 variantes. Pero el 1889 fue el primero de esa serie de revólveres.

Inaccurate, weak ASF baby shit cartridge even for the time, overall a crap revolver. Even firsthand accounts from the time said it was shit😂
Idk why but im obsessed with revolvers
The British ones do look good.

I think someone should make a modern break-open revolver. Alloys and machining accuracy would allow powerful cartridges. If we can make a break open elephant gun we certainly can make a modern break open revolver.
sure sir
Break action revolvers are unstable and cannot withstand large calibers
@@cacbishop1462 That's the cliche we have all been told, but with modern materials and CNC machining they don't have to be that way.
Like I said, if we can make a break open elephant gun then we can make a break open hand gun.
The Confederacy didn't even exist in 1855 and the Gasser wasn't invented by Peru. So many inaccuracies
now, despite being such an old revolver, the gasser of 1870 has to have been one of the best on this list when it comes to raw power
Sam colt dropped us some 🔥🔥🔥
I expected the music to stop and was finally through to a real person at my bank!
Only joking. Interesting content.
thanks a lot my dear

Colt Walker was a beast
Samuel Clot 🗿
"Back in 1835, when Halley's Comet was overhead, the same night those men died at the Alamo, they say Samuel Colt made a gun... a special gun. He made it for a hunter -- a man like us, only on horseback. The story goes he made 13 bullets. This hunter used the gun a half dozen times before he disappeared, the gun along with him. Somehow, Daniel got his hands on it. They say -- they say this gun can kill anything."
Why would they ever make a gun without a trigger guard?
Colt 1911 government 45 acp. Timeless classic. American icon.
Wow too long before the first double action revolver in the USA. Europe was ahead of it's time in that respect.
sure sir
There was also a pratical reason, american customers didn't like a lot double action revolvers, or so I read, they were reputed too delicate, on the contrary a double action revolver was surely appreciated by colonial officers and soldiers, expecially if they had to fight a mob of natives.
Naturally this depended by personal tastes, f.e. Custer at LBH had a pair of Webleys.
1875 remington, my beloved
I don't know who Samuel Hamilton was but the Colt Walker was a collaboration between Colt and Captain Samuel Walker of the Texas Rangers
bonjour magnifique vidéo sur les révolver fin du 19 début 20éme siècle merci de se partage vidéo cordialement
Some of these are definitely Red Dead redemption 2 looking pistols
Come on...! The zig zag..? The 1878 Colt Double Action every time...

There's no such thing as an 1858 Remington.
The stamp on the revolvers is a patent stamp by Fordyce Beals for the way the loading lever retains the cylinder pin.
There were models that were mostly designed in 1858, but none were ever produced until 1861, the Remington/Beals Army Model, of which only about 1900 units were made.
The revolver shown is the Remington New Model Army which wasn't produced until 1863, with approximately 132,000 units produced up to 1875.

the LeMat revolver is french
@CristobalCampbell-wu7fu The gun was made by a french guy, in the confederates states yeah, but it's just what i said, it's a french weapon so

It is very strange why the best and most famous revolver of the wild west, Colt 1873 “Peacemaker,” was not presented.
And instead of it, the Colt SAA 1872 is shown.
Although these are different revolvers!
The single action army is the peacemaker. And Colt never called it the peacemaker, the public gave it that nickname

I'm not really sure why.But a lot of your dates are just not true like you could look it up.The lemat was made in 1856 the colt 1851 navy was made in 1851 not 1850 there are also a couple others that are wrong 🤔

I own a model 1849 colt action still works and numbers match on the colt website my dad left it to me it's a 31 caliber has a stagecoach robbery scene etched on the cylinder the person my dad obtained it from said it was a family airloom and had been used in the civil war anyone out there can give me a honest opinion on what it's worth I may have to sell it to help pay for my wife's medical bills unfortunately
heartily sympathy
The 1849 Colt Pocket Revolver was the highest production cap & ball revolver made by Colt from 1849 (when it replaced the Model 1848 Baby Dragoon) to 1873, with 340,000+ manufactured. With numerous variations and conditions, it would be hard to guess at a value, but likely in the hundreds or thousands of dollars, with particularly fine examples of some rare variations worth tens of thousands. Blue Book of Gun Values or Flaydermans Guide would be helpful books.
