Alright, I’ve been playing guitar now for literally 26 years and I’ve avoided learning this, largely due to me usually playing rhythm guitar and/or acoustic…but now that I’ve grown older, I really want to enhance my soloing/scale work, which I feel is my biggest weakness at this stage in the game. Anybody else feel like they can crank out any and all chords like a rock star, even weird funky ones, but can’t seem to master all the different scales to solo efficiently? Maybe I’m alone here but I’m done avoiding the elephant in the room and finally want to tackle this. I appreciate this video, I’ve got the positioning and technique down but it’s still sloppy.

In the same boat my friend, i found playing to a click really helps with tidying it up!

I'm your opposite hahaha, I'm having a hard time learning how to do the chords, but I can play as fast and accurate as he does, but when it comes to chords I suck, this path is way harder than learning how to be fast, also it hurts a lot.

@@SlayeCohen I’ve never met an opposite of me in that respect, interesting! Yea the chords I find to be muscle memory more than anything

Yep! I’m 49 and finally jumped into the soloing . I love the sounds of sweeps know I can do a couple arpeggios. That was a big scary word in the 80’s but all it means is a broken chord.

I was always using the elbow and wrist but I would always do it in a way to minimize stress and maximize performance.

This will improve my next attempt on John Sykes’ Still of the Night solo.

I'm no shredder -- LOL, far from it -- but I'm no idiot, either. And I see guys like Rusty Cooley who are incredibly fast and yet play with lots of elbow. Batio has a very unusual picking technique, as he acknowledges himself. The lesson here is to do what works for you.

I’m not a fast player but I like to listen.

One thing to remember about all of these techniques is, they can be done at any speed. Michael can play in excess of 200 bpm. Most players find it challenging to play at half that speed. So start off at 80 bpm and gradually increase speed. 6 months from now you might not be incredibly fast but you'll be faster. And doing this technique accurately at any speed is probably an improvement.
