    It's kind of like Cointreau discarding "triple sec" from their branding even though they claim to have created the category and hold the first trademark.

      Exactly! And I spend a lot of time telling people that it's the same thing. So many bad margaritas made with cheap triple sec, sometimes when there's a bottle of Cointreau in the liquor cabinet, and they just don't know that it's the same.

    The branding decision has always struck me as weird. I thought maybe they were forced to go away from "amaretto" because of some EU regulation like amaretto can only come from a certain region or must contain more than 10% bitter almonds. Just because they wanted to seems like a bad call.

      I'm pretty sure it's because their branding people decided they had lost control of the name/category and it diluted their name recognition. Discarding the now-generic name is a strategy to strengthen their brand's name recognition.
      I'm not sure it's a good one, though.
