Unboxing the Infamous Manix 2 in 15V! It Has Some Issues.

After unboxing this knife, I asked around the knife community pretty extensively about the Manix 2 15V. I found that every person that got one had the same issues I had with the knife. I realize that Spyderco usually doesn't have perfectly even bevels, but it usually isn't this bad. As for the centering, most people I asked said theirs was off center as well, but all were able to fix it with some fiddling.
In summary, the centering is fixable, and the bevels are uneven but that doesn't really affect the cutting performance. It just bothers my OCD. So if you are fine with these issues, don't let this dissuade you from getting a Manix 2 15V. It's a fantastic knife aside from these small problems, I just wouldn't feel right if I didn't make you guys aware of them. Thanks, and I love you guys!

My two BBB 15V Manix2’s are extremely well built. I coulda snagged 3 of em, (and was tempted to do so), but figured the third should go to someone who hadn’t gotten one yet. They drop shut, have centered blades, and no blade play. The edge bevels aren’t literally perfect, but they almost NEVER are, on production, (as opposed to custom), knives. Still, they’re sharp AF, and I consider them to have excellent factory edges.
Tbh, the edge on yours looks fine to me. Cut some stuff with it. I bet it’ll do the job for quite awhile before it actually needs sharpening. 😉

    • @doodysdaggers
      @doodysdaggers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Glad to hear you got some good ones! Mine looked much worse in person, the show side bevel was twice as wide as the other one. I ended up sending it off to get freehand sharpened to fix the bevels. I know it would have cut just fine, but it was something that would have bothered me. 🤷🏻‍♂️
I’m so exited to get it back and put it to work!!

  • @pateralus9
    @pateralus9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hey there! I got mine a couple weeks back, & my bevels are mostly even. The show side bevel is ever so slightly wider than the clip side, but not by much. My blade centering favors the clip side a bit, & I have not been able to fix it as I usually can with most knives. It's also not too bad, though, so I'm not going to worry about it because I plan to use mine as well. I'm sure with some use & natural flexing of the handle, it will likely change a bit over time anyway. The action on mine was not drop shutty initially, but I polished the washers & added Gunny Glide, & now it drops shut instantly. I'm really happy to see how much they milled out the liners on this version, making it weigh only 4.2 oz as opposed to the 4.8 oz my last stock Manix 2 weighed.
I bought a Flytanium brass ball cage for mine & installed it along with a Lynch clip. The only thing from factory I dislike about the Manix 2 is the plastic ball cage. I've heard some people have had them snap, which is a shame because the knife is otherwise one of the strongest-locking knives you can buy in this price range, or really probably any price range.
The heel of the blade edge, though, looks like this on every Spyderco I've ever bought, so that looks absolutely standard to me. I think it'd just because since there's no choil of any kind, you end up with a really small unsharpened portion. I've owned dozens of Spydercos & they've all been this way, so I've gotten used to it. I actually sanded down the plastic edges of my Wicked Edge stones so I can reach inside to sharpen blade heels such as these.
The other knives in the 15V series will all be American-made Spydercos, according to the paperwork. I would imagine the "family" would start out with a PM2, Para 3, Shaman first, then maybe a couple other Golden models. But I'd be shocked if they don't start with those three after this Sprint run. They should all also be 1200-piece runs, just like this 15V Manix & most of the Sprints in general.
I'm really glad they started with the Manix 2 though, because after selling mine last year I really wanted to grab another one, & this one came along at the perfect time for me. And I was lucky enough to grab one on a drop a few weeks ago. And that's definitely not the case for everyone, as I'm still seeing people lamenting over missing out on this one. This is definitely the most highly sought-after Spyderco Sprints I've ever seen in my three years of "serious" knife collecting.
Anyway, good video & I hope you enjoy your 15V Manix 2! I know I'm impressed with mine so far. I've done a moderate amount of cardboard box breakdowns & haven't even had to strop it even one pass yet. I think it'll be a while before I even need to think about it. :o)

Hey buddy! Thank you for this highly informative comment!!
I haven’t been able to get mine centered either, but I decided to not let it bother me. I installed a Flytanium titanium blue anodized ball cage as well, and really like it. It honestly doesn’t feel much different than the plastic one, but I like knowing that locking mechanism is much stronger now. And I like the blue coloration.
I ended up sending it off to a freehand sharpener to fix the bevels and put a semi high polished edge on it. I decided trying it on the fixed angle sharpener would make things worse, and I’d be taking away too much blade material. I can’t wait to get it back and start using it!!
I am debating getting some AWT scales for it as well.. maybe sometime down the road. But for now, I’m liking the brown G10, Ti ball cage, and MXG deep carry clip.
I feel really lucky to have one! Like you said, most folks haven’t been so fortunate. Damn scalpers.
Well, very nice to meet you, I hope you stick around! 🤠

Well yes, the 15V rusts fairly easily. I already have a few rust spots on mine. I don’t care too much, gives it character. But I always wipe it down after use. There are coatings/oils for protecting your blade from rust but I’ve never tried any. 🤷🏻‍♂️

15% vanadium is over 3x as much as S30V. Which some claim is hard to sharpen. That uneven bevel is Sal, Eric and the team at Spyderco saying, if you want production models, you sharpen the damn things yourselves if you want a decent price.

Uneven bevels side to side and wider tip bevel, narrower at the bolster on each edge. Perfect centering on mine. I agree on the ergo, a knife you can grip with authority. The other Spyderco that fits like that is my Native 5 in Rex 45. The difference in G10 versus the FRN is a plus on the Manix Sprint run. Edge sharpness was OK, stropping on successive diamond paste to 0.5 micron put that razor edge on. Not as sharp out of the box as my Spyderco Chaparral in CTS-XHP, but that came from Taichung. The Rex 45 (Colorado build) also needed out of the box stropping. Easy enough to do. Time will tell as the edges of these three steels wear and I have to sharpen them.

Yep of 9 manix-2s I've purchased several had blades off center. Not bad but, it's an issue. My original S30V model and 2 others have the original pivots but all my others have the bushing pivot and a few have a tiny bit of side to side play.
I stoned the bushings on 2 to eliminate that side to side play. Blade centering can be fixed with just a tweak of the handle btw.
The manix-2 is one hell of a hard use folder imo even with its minor issues.

@@doodysdaggers - all Spydercos used a standard pivot which could be adjusted to provide the tension you prefer. About 8 or so years ago Spyderco began using a bushing pivot (pivot barrel/bushing and 2 screws)in which blade play and tension and action is pre determined by the length of the pivot barrel/bushing or its shoulders. Both pivot screws are fully tightened and no pivot tension adjustment is possible. It's a way to insure consistency of action. All Golden Colorado Spydercos have it now as far as I know. The manix-2, PM-2, yojimbo-2, native-5s definitely have it.
The bushing only allows about .001" to .003" of clearance which is perfect for most but if you prefer zero blade play you may have to remove a tiny amount of material from the bushing to close up those tolerances. Or from the pivot bushing shouldered hole in the liner where the shoulder meets.
Easy enough normally but on most Spydercos that dimension is set by the shoulder of the pivot barrel/bushing, not its length so you have to carefully remove material from that shouldered section. It's tedious but very possible.
My manix-2s and PM-2s were like this and had just .001" of play.
I adjusted 3 of them. The others were already perfect from the Factory.
You have to be careful though. If you remove too much material the pivot will be too tight. But then, I suppose you could then adjust tension with the screws but I'm not sure. I was very careful to only remove .001" from mine.

It was a sprint run, as it was available at numerous retailers.
    They probably made 5000 units.
I’ve not handled a Manix 2. I might pick up one some day.
If they release a PM2 in 15V, I’ll likely pick one up.

Ah okay. Sprint run is multiple retailers, exclusive is one retailer. I should have put that together myself. Haha
I bet they will do a PM2, if I were to guess. Honestly the Manix is a bit more ergonomic though, and it’s got a bit more of a slicey blade. But you gotta have a PM2 in 15V for your collection for sure.

Not gonna lie, it's kinda depressing seeing all these folks buying these knives with absolutely zero idea of who Big Brown Bear is and the work he put into this steel. Dates back to Spyderco forum between him and Sal in 2018. Limited supply yet folks scoop them up with no idea what they are purchasing and the story behind it.
