If I've got this right, the cathedral organ was out of action during this recording - and the organ part is vital and not 'ad lib' as a lot of organ parts are. So the organist played his part on the organ of a local parish church using primitive CCTV at the same time as everyone else performed in the cathedral and both venues were recorded simultaneously!!! Extraordinary achievement!!
Having seen the original broadcast (late 1968 or 1969 I think), I hoped this might some day appear. It is absolutely wonderful, and it is lovely to have it. The sound on the full DVD is better than here on TH-cam, not surprisingly, and quite passable.
I HAD NO idea this still existed, i had assumed that it had been wiped along with the other 90 percent of BBC 2 colour recordings from 1967-70, from memory i think this is from about March 1968
The 'ICA Classics' DVD from which these excerpts come was issued in 2016. The booklet gives the filming dates as 27 & 28 March 1968. The DVD catalogue number is in the description under the video.
@@adam28xx i've been doing a little research since i posted this, one review questions the dates of the recording, amazingly just last week i acquired an April 68 Copy of the Radio Times & saw this screening listed & fumed about another lost bit of history with a loss of another early colour recording, little did i know that last night - a couple of days later - i would blunder into this by pure accident because i wanted to watch Bakers Dido's lament again from 1965 so finding this was a real unexpected joy. It was aired at easter april 1968, I understand it says this has recording has been restored within the limits of the OB PAL colour recording tech of the day , i do not know if this needed a colour restoration but from the full poorer copy of this recording on youtube the colour seems like it was still intact ( many BBC 60's colour recordings exist as 16mm black & white prints for export but can have their colour restored - restored that is not re-colourized ). 25 quid seems a bit steep to buy a copy of this but i'll be keeping an eye on that !!!
I don't know why a reviewer should question the recording dates. Michael Kennedy's bio of Sir Adrian Boult gives the same dates as the DVD booklet and he wouldn't have got them wrong! ... Amazon UK shows a few copies a little cheaper but not much ... ie: about £20.00.
