Utterly sublime. Hints of many of Elgar's haunting motifs from other pieces including Enigma Variations and Sea Pictures If you're English this reaches to the very depth of your soul, in an indescribable way. My late dear Mum first introduced me to Elgar, just when Ken Russell was making his brilliant films about great composers, and I remember the scenes (black and white?) on TV of the young Elgar riding over the Malvern hills to the accompaniment of Enigma Variations, in the days when the Beeb was still a great (British) institution. What genius!😢
Elgar brings something spine shiveringly spiritual to a poem which is somewhat unpleasant on its own, humanity being whipped on by ambiguous movers and shakers, relieved only by the line about "but on one man it broke a light that shall not depart." I wish Elgar were a light to our contemporary composers blazing trails very few want to go and being rewarded for it by a one wing of a divided establishment.
This is one of my favourite poems. O' Shaughnessy wrote it when still quite a young man. Whilst I'm not well read, maybe I enjoy it more than you for that reason. These musicians and vocalists do Elgar a great service, because this was by no means one of his best works. So you see I don't believe Elgar quite does O' Shaughnessy's words justice. X
Does anyone know which actual performance this is, and who conducted it? Just sung the piece this week, and realised what a difficult piece it is to bring off. To get the accuracy you need, and also the flexibility of beat that gives the necessary expression.

What a wonderful voice, perfect, just perfect. Thank you Janet.
Virtually a lost piece. With this grand rendition and the Sarah Connolly version (with the great Sea Pictures), maybe it will risecagain.
