It’s a big deal when someone as gifted and revered come and play one of his many hits with you and your fellow musicians. Paul Simon, one of the greats. I’m happy he’s still here with us.👍👍🇨🇦

I feel sorry for those of you who say such disrespectful things about Paul Simon. When we get older our voices change. He is one of the best and brightest singer songwriters of our time and you expect him to sound like he did when he was 25? I had a really good voice until a health problem took it away.
Now I cringe when I hear my voice in a phone video. I would venture to say it will happen to you. Listen to Lenord Cohen. He can't sing a lot of his older songs but he knocks out the ones he can. RIP, Lennie.
You guys need to give respect to what he did and try a little tenderness for what he does now.

Some of Johnny Cash's best performances were done not long before he died and the roughness of his voice lended extra truth to the songs. You just have to listen with your heart not your critic's mind.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with Paul's voice. Yes, we lose control as we age but he's better than so many younger guys out there screaming and screeching. Those who don't remember Simon and Garfunkel should really take a trip through music history to see what real music and harmonies were like with lyrics that told stories of life in ways we could relate to. Disrespect shows ignorance. That's all I can say.

This song is truly a sequel. It isn't supposed to be the same song as the original. Listen to the words that Paul added to it. It is a beautiful, soulful, poem to the past. A Boxer who's now an old man. What a gift. Thank you Paul Simon. You are an American legend and a treasure.

Check out Pauls recent audio book with Malcom Gladwell, talks a lot about how he has adapted his lyrics to who he feels he is at various points in his life rather than when he wrote the songs!

Really have absolutely no idea what all the whiners on this thread are cribbing about? this is a stellar performance by one of the greatest Maestros of our times. He's not 22 anymore folks - don't expect him to sound like he is. having said that this rendition was as flawless as it could be. don't forget it was probably captured on a small handheld device from someone in the audience. Not the best way to capture and reproduce what went down.
    Immense respect and gratitude....

with all respect ot the musicians involved, it’s the accompaniment that isn’t needed, except maybe the chorus. Paul’s voice and expression is fine. He’s expressing the great original mood of the song. The other guys are just doing generic, if accomplished, musical decoration, which is really not needed in a song with a singular point of view.

Glad I stumbled across this video. I've revered Paul Simon's unique music and distinctive songwriting since I first heard him in high school, in 1965. His music was the soundtrack of my early adulthood. I heard The Boxer and Bridge Over Troubled Water while on leave from Vietnam, and secured an open-reel (!) copy of the album which I listened to over and over again. Simon's music later accompanied me to college. I learned to play guitar in part because of this music. What a treasure, and Jerry Douglas and the band show such care for the music and respect it is truly heartwarming. Thanks for posting.

  • @EricRoy42

What is so cool about this video is that Paul has reinvented his own song here and I love it! I'm so used to the more epic sound of the original, but this version has a more mournful, lonely and soulful, country feel to it. He is a true artist. I also love the Mumford & Son's version (with Jerry). They're all brilliant. A true homage to Paul's original. Good music is good music.

Paul Simon has more music in his little finger than most of you collectively have in your whole bodies. He's forgotten more about music and arranging than you'll ever learn. I just watched his concert and this tune with Jerry from the Hard Rock Calling concert in Hyde Park, London from 2012 and their performance was hair-raising.

Total magic. And how great to hear the original "missing" verse:
    ~|
"The Boxer" was originally written with a verse that is not present in the Bridge Over Troubled Water version:
Now the years are rolling by me
    They are rockin' evenly
I am older than I once was
And younger than I'll be; that's not unusual.
    Nor is it strange
    After changes upon changes
We are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same
This "missing" verse was performed by Simon & Garfunkel when they went on tour in November 1969 (this version of the song is included on the Live 1969 album), and Paul Simon when he performed it solo after the duo's breakup. Simon & Garfunkel also performed the "missing verse" on Saturday Night Live in 1975 and when they reunited for The Concert in Central Park in 1981, and on Late Show with David Letterman. (Wikipedia)

It IS on their 'Live 1969' album, and their 'Concert in Central Park' album from 1981. Paul has since performed it that way many times at his concerts...seems fitting when you really listen to the lyrics :)

your on you tube, consider looking to find out who these "dudes" are. Jerry Douglas is one of the finest musicians on the planet. Love Paul Simon for all his fabulous song writing and contribution to music. With all due respect, his musical (instrumental) talents can't hold a candle to JD. IMHO

+mtchair4me That's what I love about live concerts - Paul was able to do a take on the song that wasn't what you've heard a thousand times. And really only the person who wrote the song can riff on it like that so you really hear it in a non-habitual way. Great job guys.

Wha? Did I miss something. I think his zipper was up. Hmmmm, guess I just ain't as observant as I once was, but that's not unusual. After changes upon changes I am more or less the same. after changes I am more or less the same.

This was terrible paul! not singing... more just whining and a little bit of talking your way through the song!

+walkernick86 this song is theatre; it's not just about how he sounds, but how he feels. Top of his game there.
(also, the song is adapted from a harmony, so it's never going to sound the same as with a duo.)

Paul Simon is a legend. You can't expect him to sing like when he was young, everyone's voice changes when they get older
