    I hired a guy to paint my garage and do a stripe, he used standard tape and the stripe bleed badly, I found this video and redid it with frog tape and clear caulking, all I can say is WOW, I mean WOW, came out like a pro...best tip ever, and my garage has a rough surface. Looks like a vinyl decal.
    Thanks Chris....

    Hey Idaho Painter, you probably don't have any of these but us non-pros have old brushes without the taper and sharpness you talked about. I just took my beard trimmer and trimmed the brush! Now I have a nice taper and cutting it shorter has made it stiffer too! Thanks, helpful video!

    I’m just a girl that lives with my cat. I tried just tape before and the paint bled then I painted the wall white agin with primer and followed this trick and managed to get a caulking gun and this really works! Thank you so much sir! I’m painting my whole house with your tips after paying almost 7 thousand dollars to have my house painted and they did a horrible job. I’m repainting one room at a time. They don’t respect girls and honestly I thought about going to small claims court bu I don’t blame the workers, I blame the contractor that disappeared. Lesson learned! Since I’m out of that money now, I’m doing myself with all your tips! Again thank you sir!

      I just paid 15K to have a new air conditioner put in, and they screwed it up. Can I play the identity card and say they hated white, English-speaking, American citizens? After all, not one of the 10 men in my house spoke English (although, strangely the sales rep was white and spoke perfect English). Do you think they did a horrible job because they’re racist Hispanic, that (if I had to guess) probably weren’t even in the country legally?

      I'm "just a girl" too and most of the painters out there, in my area, don't give a darn when they think they can fool a woman. I hired one and he did one room and I fired him. I'll do the rest of the house myself. He did a horrible job. I've learned more on youtube (by real professionals). I'm so sorry you lost $7k. Ouch.

      Sorry to hear that :/ But I will say there are A LOT of shoddy tradesmen out there it does not apply only to women they try fleece guys too. In my country Ireland at least they are completely unregulated and I think it's the same in most countries. Unless they come personally recommended I try my best to keep tradesmen out of my house, unless they are personally recommended.
      Only yesterday I had a plumber out to clear a slow blockage, I suspected he was telling me nonsense about what the problem was. So I said I would pay half on the day and half if the slow blockage stops I would only know for sure a few days later and I would pay him then. It was enough to scare him off, he never came around, he prob knew the job was unlikely to work. He was hoping to get full payment and if it didn't work vanish never to be seen again. I did the checks on what he was supposed to do today, and I know for certain it would not have worked.
      I will also say that if you do jobs in house yourself, be prepared to invest in some basic tools (which is a fraction of the cost of the tradesman though). But you will learn so much more that you can then in turn apply to other jobs if you do it yourself :) And if you ever need to get a tradesman out, you will be more clued in to what they are doing to make sure the job is done right.

    The edgelock in frog tape is activated by the water in the latex paint. Just simply wipe a damp rag over your tape edge to activate the edgelock. Laser lines, with no sheen or flashing from the caulking. And can do two coats without removing tape between coats.

    • @johnbonham617
      @johnbonham617 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So I can use the frogtape, paint, let the paint dry, re-coat and pull the tape without a problem? I was unsure about the process of using tape and whether or not to pull the tape before the paint dries or not as with taping before multiple coats.

    • @woodstover
      @woodstover 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you don't want the paint to still be wet when you pull the tape off. If it dries, you can/will pull the paint off the wall when you pull the tape.

      Christian Vale I use frog tape daily and I dont pull it off until Im done with the second coat even if im using eggshell, or lowsheen paint on the walls, you just have to bacareful not to load to much paint over the tape and be carefull when yo I do your first pull, pull away from the wall not upwards

    The caulking can distort the texture of the wall best way is to seal edge with existing color. Then paint with new color, pull when wet. Really like your videos though. I work for a GC and am the paint lead and I learn a lot from your videos keep Em coming

    • @BrianHawkinsJ

      Peter Sedrak Tape is less than 6mils thick. If excess caulking is wiped off correctly, what remains should be even thinner than the tape. The stippling of the paint would cover up such a thin line of caulk even on a smooth wall, and on a textured surface there is no chance it will be visible.

    • @BrokenRRT
      @BrokenRRT 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Hawkins - does the latex caulking change the sheen of the paint such as where the caulking line is will it dry shinier than the paints lily of shine? Does it work on flat latex paints as well?

      After you seal the edge with the existing colour, do you wait till this dries before you paint with the new colour, or paint right away with the new colour? (I know you seal the edge with very little of the existing paint, so I think that maybe it's ok to paint over it when still wet...)

    great video. I have never used frog tape, I use a blue in color brand from a Sherman W. store. When I tape wall lines I place the tape as straight as possible and then using my flexible 2" putty knife run the blade over the tape ensuring a better seal then using my hand pressure. When removing the tape I pull down and away. So far it seems to work for me on smooth walls or walls that are somewhat old (painted to death). I have never tried your technique on baseboards yet. I like it.

    Nice tip.
    What I sometimes do, is that I - in a similar situation - first paint over the edge of the tape with the colour that is under the tape, filling the small pockets under the tape with it. (That of course requires that you still have paint in that colour.)

    Great tips. I usually paint the trim first. When good and dry. I tape the trim. I then go over the tape and wall with the trim color on a brush. Any bleeding would be with the trim color. Go over the tape and trim paint with the wall color on a brush. Laser lines every time.

      If you waited for the second coat, the paint and caulking would dry, and it will peel the paint. It did happen to me painting door sidelight windows, so now I'm planning to light sand the area, do the caulking trick with the paint with one coat, and remove it right away.

    I'm a carpenter by trade and worked for a painting company so it was nice to have steady work doing trim packages etc, of course some time i would get caught up so I would help painting, this was a technique that we would use all the time. I once had someone make fun of me cause they said "I couldn't cut in a line" so I told them let's have little race to see who was faster. .... not only did I finish my room first but the quality was in the prof of the laser straight lines.

    I'm only hesitant due to having to remove the tape before the caulk and paint dries. I need that tape to help keep the second cut in on point too.
    🤔 Hmm... It is a very good tip! As an inexperienced DIY painter I could still mess up that line during the second pass. Yikes!!!

  • @jdthomas1984
    @jdthomas1984 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another version of this is to paint some clear paint glaze onto the tape edge and let it dry. The advantages are less mess, smaller ridge on the paint line, lower materials cost and faster application. The downsides are having to have an extra material on hand for an occasional need (no small problem for many professionals) and having to wait an hour or so for the glaze to dry.

      You put the caulk on second coat or way before you paint just do it all first same thing this is just used when your trying to knock the job out all together at one time . Or if you want to put caulk on prime coat prime it pull tape then when you paint get as close to the corner as possible without going al the way in and it should be fine also aslong it’s tinted primer that’s iffy though with certain colors so best bet is to prime then in first coat caulk pull your tape and in second go close as possible being you coated the inside when u pulled tape you won’t have to go all in but when just priming and rolling one coat using this method use tinted primer same color . Sometimes you get lucky sometimes you don’t depends on the job

    Instead of caulking I have used gel medium in matte finish, you get it at the art supply store like Aaron Brothers and I believe Michaels has it as well. I apply it with a sponge brush and my finger. It works with all paint types. Just make sure you don't apply too thick. You just need a little bit. You don't have to worry about the paint drying...its all good.

    Looks great. This looks like a great idea if you only need to use one coat of paint but what about if your priming the walls and then doing 2 finish coats? If you tape the baseboard even without the caulk and let the paint dry then do a couple more coats won't the tape pull the paint off with it?
    I guess my question is, if you tape anything (ceiling to wall, wall to base) doesn't the tape need to come off before the paint dry's? If so it seems like taping is only good for a one coat job???

    Thick mineral based paint will push its way under the frig tape. The caulking is a must for actually perfect lines.

    Extra tips: Make sure the caulk is paintable and not 100% silicone (which won't allow paint over it). Brush the dust off the trim before you tape it. No tape adheres to dust.

    Hey guys I love your channel and I have used your technique before on a previous home it work great. So, on the new home I am going to have to put two coats on every wall and before I didn't, only one coat to cover. My question is will I need to re-tape and re-caulk after each coat because I know you cannot let the caulk dry or is there a different technique for using two coats or more. Thanks so much for any info.

      When you cut in for your second coat, just don't get as close to the trim. The second cut in doesn't need to be perfect, the first one is where you get your money.

    Very good video I just don’t understand when and how to use the caulking and just how that works. Don’t you see the caulking bleedthrough through the paint even though it is a latex or doesn’t it make a hump if you will where exactly would you use this I just don’t get it but love the video.

    I’ve done this method around door frames, for example, and let it dry fully. But before pulling tape I just use a new razor blade and get the same result as pulling it wet - saves me having to tape it 2-3 times

    It’s very hard to find clear latex caulk. Am I missing something? Can you use silicone sealant?

    @paint life tv can you do this on trim edges as well? Seems like it would work great. Im a professional painter but i have never liked how door and window edges look painting free-hand. Ive come to the point where i want to have perfect lines everywhere, especially on trim.

    masking tape peels the top layer of sheetrock off sometimes. frog tape sometimes let's the paint bleed. I always use the 1.5 blue tape. but again I've never used the clear silicone trick. also I don't use the blue tape with orange writing on it. just the plain blue tape. is my go to but eveybkdy is different. nice videos btw. painter here for over 16 years. they say I've learned the old school way. whatever that means. lol

      Yes, I highly recommend using the caulking if you are having trouble with the paint bleeding

    Great Tip i've been using this method on occasion for certain jobs, but I do have a question what do you do for second coat? Do you just retape it and do it again or what process do you use for this?

    we do the same thing when painting walls after we have already painted the trim. but any time we are just doing walls we use the white tape and usually get great lines.l I've Tue Cid's Jeep up the great work.

    • @Idahopainter

      We just just go back through and do touch ups instead of re masking
