We played this beautiful song yesterday during the funeral of my dad. He passed away way to early. During the last months of his life, he daily watched the liveshows of Harris & Knopfler. And said to me: "I want 'If this is goodbye' to be played at my funeral". This song will always move me to tears.
This would have to be one of the best combinations there has ever been. Her voice, his voice, and how his hands can make that guitar sing, just superb. He's a master.
Never mind who is the greatest of all time no one can touch your heartstrings like Mark Knopfler. Privileged to have gone to school in the year below him at Gosforth Grammar. Love his music.
A fantastic song which could not be improved in any way. The tune, lyrics, singing and guitar playing are all of the best possible quality. Truly one of the best and most moving performances of any song I have ever heard.
This is a song that is crystallized in our memories on that horrific day when we all lost our innocence. For those of us closest to the scene, we will NEVER forget the sub base here in Groton closing and all subs sent to sea, the children of these brave men and women ending up in our house as they feared for their lives, the sirens sounding off as Armageddon was upon us, and how we all looked at life a little differently after this day. It was not goodbye for us, as the song suggests for those on the planes, but we all felt the sorrow, horror, and no tomorrow on the 11th of September, 2001. Let’s hope we NEVER forget this time in our life.
+shane oprosky Not only in our backyard, but a mere 7 years after this most horrific event carried out by Muslims, we showed our gratitude and indifference by electing one of theirs to the WH. Unbelievable.
@@buckshotbeulah - I agree with your interpretation of Rachel's words, but wouldn't you say that Knopfler has received so much credit over his career that he will be one of the immortal legends of rock music?
It's all these jumped up 20 and 30 somethings stating about greats out since the 60's 70's etc that are "underrated". Of course they are sure they weren't around when these gems were adored and in their prime to appreciate them. They probably found this song after burning out a computer listening to emminem and other shit that will pass as "underrated" in 35 years time....FUCK OFF
Awesome!! is not the word to describe this song and the feeling that this song gives me. Maybe the word "overwhelming" is a better word to describe it because it just brings tears to my eyes. Emmylou Harris has always been one of my favorite singers,. I must admit I had never heard of Mark Knopfler but this guy is awesome for writing a song like this and the guitar playing just had a lot of soul in it. Thank you Mark and Emmylou for writing and and singing this beautiful song and for sharing your beautiful gift with your fans. Heidy and the band "Optimus"
Danny Cummings, Mark & Emmylou, Glenn Worf, Richard Bennet and Guy Fletcher..... Such a beautiful song about the worst atrocity ever since Pearl Harbour in the USA, I see people already know what inspired this song, but not what happened when Mark and Emmylou had rehearsed it 30+ times, he didn't tell her what the song was about........ when he finally told her "its about the phone calls made from the Fateful Planes from the passengers on 9/11 to their loved ones"..... the week before their 1st gig........ she broke her heart crying...... and in the few gigs of the Tour you could see the tears rolling from her eyes, you can hear the passion in her voice, for me Its 1 of the most Beautifully sad songs ever, and only a man that is MK could write such a song.....Emmylou also said about the album All the Roadrunning, which took 7 years to finish, "When you combine two unique voices it creates a third, phantom voice" and the live harmonies still make me shed a tear or two......God Bless all the Broken Hearted people on that awful day :(

A man with an enormous heart. Sometimes I think he's all heart. One of my favorites from "All The Roadrunning," one of the best country albums I've ever heard. They sing beautifully together. I've listened to it countless times.
I held my wife in my arms to my chest as she slipped off to heaven This last melody we shared together I sang her to sleep in Heaven. RIP my Queen December 13 2016
I wish I could give this 10,000,000 likes for the beauty of the singing, the songwriting and guitar playing by, who in my opinion, it THE greatest guitar player in the world. Not just the number of licks, but the emotion displayed.
Marc is what my guitar teacher said thirty years ago ---- just amazing TASTY !!! Marc IS the best guitar player in the world, though that crowd is plenty thick with amazing players. I think no one has the nuance that Knopfler has. So many many greats....
Tina, That's why classic songs are written Tina. So we can all take a small bit of their love with us. I'm hoping the Great Spirit will be with you to the Place Where The River Meets the Sun....

My son also died in August, 2021. Life will never be the same.😢😢😢💝
A beautiful and haunting tribute for those who suffered and are still suffering, sang with true feelings from two fantastic music icons ❤ 🌹

Well said Sir
I love this song, and it's a beautiful tribute to the lives lost. Mark Knopfler is an underrated songwriter.

LYRICS:
My famous last words
Are laying around in tatters
Sounding absurd
Whatever I try
But I love you
And that's all what really matters
If this is goodbye
If this is goodbye
Your bright shining sun
Would light up the way before me
You were the one
Made me feel I could fly
And I love you
Whatever is waiting for me
If this is goodbye
If this is goodbye
Who knows how long we've got
Or what we're made of
Who knows if there's plan or not
There is our love
I know there is our love
My famous last words
Could never tell the story
Spinning unheard
In the dark of the sky
But I love you
And this is our glory
If this is goodbye
If this is goodbye
If this is goodbye
If this is goodbye
