Absolutely sublime. Covid 19 be damned! I cried and cried, and then I cried some more. But let me tell you what happened about 24 years ago. It happened in Fortuna, California. My wife and I ambled into a thrift store. When I noticed what an employee was playing on CD, I had to do a double take. I mumbled half under my breath. "That sounds like John Prine". Suddenly, I heard someone from behind the counter, shocked, ask: " WHAT did you say???" I wheeled around, turned toward the employee, and repeated myself. Well, sir, her eyes lit up, and with an ear to ear smile, we instantly, but briefly connected, as only devout musicians will do. She said: "Because it IS John Prine!"
I'm 51 years old and this is my first time listening to Emmylou Harris....Talk about regret... All those wasted years. She is mesmerizing. Thank god I'm a huge fan of Mark Knopfler, I may have never listened to her.
She's always had a beautiful voice but somehow over time it seems that it has matured into something beyond perfection. Bowls me over every time. Soul, spirit, love and a lifetime of living spills out.
I am from that part of the world, and I have seen the world, and that damn Red Dirt (clay) is as much a part of me as anything else. When I get to missing my people back in Alabama, I can count on this song to take me back there to walking barefoot down an old red dirt road with my brothers and friends. This song really gets the desperation, the fear of being left in a small backward world, but a kind of lingering appreciation for from where one comes . Much love to all!
This IS country. Nonetheless your comment is vitriolic and useless. She considered herself a country music artist introduced to the genre by Gram Parsons
i've seen Emmy Lou 3 times. Once I stood backstage when she played at Interlochen. I've got to buy this album again. She breaks your heart and fills your soul at the same time.
Just her voice and guitar picking sounuds like angel singing. But Mark and guys with their numerous instruments gave additional magic to this stunning tune. That I love so much. The whole Knopfler & Harris project is such a God given thing. I've heard the album, saw two of them performing together on YT what can be seen. My only regret is that was not able to see them live. THAT would be ultimate magic. Cause it can be felt here...on this video. And on Shangri La...and others. The reaction of the audience....All of it. So, so beautiul. Dear Mrs Harris and dear Mr Knopfler...thank you so much for the beuty you've created. You've heared it surely million times...but here's a million and one - thank you for the joy you give to my life.
Emmy is so accomplished in this song that she can carry this song as a solo effort. She needs no one to accompany her to tell her story. This version is outstanding.
My Daddy would say some time,s ...The Rich get Richer and the poor stay poor,that...just the way it is...unless you sell your soul...it,s a Way of Life for so many poor boys and girls❤️always the hardest on the kids🌹
The secret is to get out of those red dirt states. Go the pill and you don't always need a man. You can do a Euro tour like Jane Austen suggested . If you don't know what it means look it up.

God I love this song. Invokes a cascade of emotions, memories, and lives lost that somehow are still with us. Thank you Emmylou for a lifetime of joy and tears and thankfulness.
I saw their concert in Barcelona. I went because I love Mark Knopfler's music. But when Emmylou started singing I realized who the legend is. In live she is different, you feel different and you stay hooked on the song until she finishes. Does anyone else agree with me?
Welcome to the reality of Emmy Lou. Check out some of her other work. She has been so great for many years. Check out "No Regrets" " Till I can gain control again" "Pancho and lefty" "If you were a bluebird" and on and on. Just a few of my favorites
My mother was a red dirt girl, from the back o Bourke. Married a railway man from Albury or some such. The railways have figured large in my life, even when asleep.. a magic that underlines all our realities ‐ 24/7, night and day
I had never heard this until I got into ‘First Aid Kit’ and You tube put the song up, their cover is amazing! Beautiful song. Whilst in the states when married to a Missouri gal i realised the power of country songs, they all tell a story! Emmylou is the Queen of country! Always brings a tear to my eye..................
As a 19 year old, I got to see her several times before she was "discovered", playing at the Childe Harold in D.C., near Dupont Circle, in the very early '70s. There were about 30 people in that little club, and, of course, all of us guys had a crush on her. My buddy lived near her parents out in Howard County. Still go see her when she is on tour. She's gone a long ways from that little club, as have all of us.
The years pile up quick, don't they? It really floors me sometimes, when I think of an event like you mention, that I remember so clearly that it seems like yesterday, then start adding up how many years it was since it happened. ...then of course I see a video like this one, and the time is obvious, and written on people's faces. Getting old sucks, I don't care what anybody says.
Got way too drunk at Childe Harold many years ago, but it closed for good more than a decade ago. It lived from 1967 to 2007, not bad for a restaurant, most close in fewer than five years.
memories memories! I was a regular at Childe Harold - loved that place - lived up on U street and used to hang at CH and Stetsons...long gone days, but wonderful to hear Emmy Lou here - fan of hers for decades! (so many!)
I saw her at the Child Herald in 1971...when she was unknown. Sitting at a table with a friend, I heard her singing folk music..it was a Buffy Saint Marie song. She sounded like Joan Baez and with her long black hair..so beautiful. I asked someone what's her name and found out and remembered. A few years later I heard her sing on an album with Gram Parsons and I said...dammit...its her. I went out and bought the album "Grevious Angel". Now I have most of her albums and have been in love with her since 1971. I saw her once more after that and hope to see her again so I can tell her my story. She is awsome.
From Emmylou Harris herself - the background to this song on her website: "I am very, very inspired by the sound of words, and the names of places are so melodic and beautiful," she said. "I was passing through Meridian on my way down to record in New Orleans and that's what started it." "But what really took it over the edge for me was on a night off in New Orleans we went to see Boys Don't Cry," Emmylou continued. "It unnerved me, not only because of the violence and homophobia, but also because of the underlying theme of how trapped those young people were. We all come into this world with so much potential and so many dreams. Who knows why some people escape and other people don't? The key idea is in the lyric, 'There won't be any mentions on The News of the World.'" Emmylou told the story of the song to American Songwriter magazine: "I had driven to New Orleans with my dog Bonaparte and I passed the sign for Meridian, and I started making rhymes in my head. So I had this rhyme scheme but I didn't know what it was about. You get crushes on words and then the rhymes come. Anyways, right after I got there, I went to see the movie Boys Don't Cry. This story about the lost lives of these young people with nowhere to go and it turns into such negative things …" "I've had this incredibly blessed life, but I created this character who'd had all of these hopes … and I just made this story up inspired by my remembrances of the south. I also imposed the lives of these kids from Boys Don't Cry. Who knows where these songs come from? It's such a mystery to me. Sometimes, I think, 'God, I really wrote that?'" A stunning, sad song, about everyday life in America.
Met Emmylou from 8 years ago. I will never forget it. She was so friendly.. had time to talk. I could hardly belive. She is a great legend. Her music will never die. Proud to have met Emmylou Harris.
Emmylou's voice is absolutely timeless, but she is one hell of a songwriter too. She has these little lines that are just absolute punches to the gut. One of my favorite lines is from Boulder to Birmingham (a song about Gram Parsons death) "Well you really got me this time. And the hardest part is knowing I'll survive." Such an amazingly haunting line about grief and mourning.
I can not help it... I hear this song, and I get all teary-eyed. I suggest that if it makes you the same way, then you shouldn't drive while listening to it.
Well I have been playing folk/bluegrass all my life and at 70 they are one of my favorites any way very nice job young people as usual thank you so much :)
This song made me cry tonight. Emmylou has been my "go to" singer ever since I was introduced to her in the early seventies. I have seen her perform three times, and I treasure those memories. Now, I am so thankful for TH-cam. It is almost like being there!
...My eyes water every time I hear this song, especially this version with Emmylou and Mark. Full emotion submersion is what good music is all about. (This coming from a mostly heavy metal music fan).
The honest intimacy of Emmylou's songs is so expressive of the human condition, the human emotion, and the human heart. She saw this in many of Gram's songs and became closer to her audience even as the "country radio moguls" dismissed her. She is so genuine in her writing that you feel like a close friend whom she just shared with a most personal secret or feeling. In this day of division...isn't it nice to find someone you can share this life with? (And Emmylou Harris is always there for you...singing her song "just for you.")
The song, like this is like story of once life, the more You want to run away the more You dig a hole to make Your self stay......You want to go far places and end up not going anywhere......dream big, but never end up to put that hammer down with the nice sound. They dont make songs like that anymore, song with a soul, so nice. BRAVO. TH
I once heard Emmylou talk about this song as it relates to her. She explains...I was not a red dirt girl myself. This song brought up memories of the south ( Alabama), where she was born. But she came from a military family, her father was a Major in the Marine Corps., and her parents moved a lot. She was a small child when they moved and lived in NC, VA and Md. As she states, she got the words in her mind while driving by Meridian on her way to New Orleans. She proved yo be a great song writer.
One of the loveliest ladies on the planet. A wonderful artist, songwriter and such a hauntingly beautiful voice. This song just pulls your heart strings until they break and cause you to burst into tears. Yes, it is a story that may not be true, but I suspect there are many Red Dirt Girls in real life.
@@briane5706 thank you. Life just seems to be too hard for some people. She and I were best friends as children, and even on similar trajectories. I managed to get off it, she didn't ...
I truly loved this tour of Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris. Emmylou is so talented, and good looking, that about says it all.
This is a song that crushes you to the soul, yet you can't stop listening to it. Over and over.
Kind of wonder if this is really about someone she knew. Probably not, but you never know.

A gentle man. A giant of a musician.
Emmylou has to be one of the most beautiful women ever. Not just her looks.
She's a beautiful soul -- a true artist.
She is! The beauty of her soul exceeds even her physical beauty, which is no small feat.

I’m not what you’d call a ‘country fan’, but you can’t beat a bit of Emmylou. She’s absolute class 🥰🥰

Wow! Emmylou Harris is a national treasure. This song is perfection.
One of my favorite Emmy Lou Harris recordings. Dan Lanois is a master. Thank you ELH for your beautiful voice and storytelling.
@Radbod Egal You should add its only your opinion.
One of the zillion things we have to thank Danny for is sitting Emmy Lou down and saying: "Baby, your songs, your way". Fuckin' genius.
Daniel Lanois produced the album where she sang "Here I Am". Feels like he pushed her to sing a little out of character, and they hit a home run.
A heartache, captured by Emmylou and the musicians. A heartache.

This song made me cry tonight. Emmylou has been my "go to" singer ever since I was introduced to her in the early seventies. I have seen her perform three times, and I treasure those memories. Now, I am so thankful for TH-cam. It is almost like being there!
I get tears every time, but I keep coming back
I adore Emmylou 's voice !!!
Was für eine schöne Stimme und Mark gibt Emmylou alle Ehre 👌
Wow.this is the most I've replayed in years please dontsplt. awesome .. sound together is just bliss ..
...My eyes water every time I hear this song, especially this version with Emmylou and Mark. Full emotion submersion is what good music is all about. (This coming from a mostly heavy metal music fan).
Thank you. Good morning to all. Thank you Emmy Lou
Her voice is as powerful as ever...Lord I love her voice.....
My angel and Mark can't say enough.
BRAVO. TH
A sad song sung with the voice of an angel....
👏👏👍👍❤️❤️🇨🇭🇨🇭

She's still amazing. I love the compassion in this song.
The haunting, heartbreaking beauty of this song. It is America.
Although EmmyLou wrote very few songs, this song is one of the finest anywhere.
Love, love, love Knopfler and Emmylou together.
I have listened to this perfect woman for to many years to count…. A will continue sweet lady, God bless.
I ❤❤❤❤ Emmylou. She is just MAGIC. I grew up in the late 60's 70's 80's. That was my music era but Emmylou just reaches in and grabs your soul 😊
Just wonderful. Mark sitting on the background and give this amazing lady the space
Yes, there are. My childhood best friend ... ☹💔

Thank you for sharing this. Love and best wishes to you and your family.
@@briane5706 thank you. Life just seems to be too hard for some people. She and I were best friends as children, and even on similar trajectories. I managed to get off it, she didn't ...
