    One of my favourite cars from the tail fin era. The Fury in the two door model looked fast, even standing still !! And the front end/front fender body styling looked every bit as good as the tail fins. And the dash instrument cluster and steering wheel continued to tell you that this car was something very different than everything else on the road.

  • @steveanderson6353

    These Exner era Plymouths are beautiful. Almost 20 years ago, I picked up a pretty haggard but solid 1960 Plymouth from an old farmer that bought it when he was a teen and used it for cross country road trips. It was a slant 6 with a 3 speed. When he used up the best years of it, he delegated it for farm truck duty, then it was retired to parts car. I saved it from the crusher. Not wanting another average finned Plymouth in the fleet, I took a '68 Power Wagon chassis, shortened it 9 inches and put that car on that 4 by 4 frame and put 36 inch military rubber on it. The project got sidelined a decade ago by other Mopar crusher rescues, but is still sitting in the yard. This may be the inspiration needed to get it done.

    No VIN, can't win, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 3 for Plymouth V8, 3 for Fury, 0 for 1960 model year, 3 for Lynch Road, Detroit, MI assembly or 9 for Windsor, Ontario Canada assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Lynch Road facility operated until April 1981 and now has a powder coating business on that site, among other uses of the property. The Windsor, Ontario facility still operates today under Stellantis. That's an old "Flying A" gas station service sticker on the driver's door post. Flying A became Phillips 66 around 1966. That's a four door (not two door) sedan.
    No tag, can't brag, but can be figured out, no doubt: 334 for Fury V8 four door sedan, 121 for Blue interior trim, W for White Oyster exterior paint, among other codes. The address where Wright Motor Company was now appears to be a bunch of legal offices and the actual address appears to have been combined into other ones in use now.

    Whenever I see these big mopar sedans of the late '50s and early '60s I always think of an old guy from California named Norm Thatcher. He owned a Chrysler dealership and I remember him running big Dodge sedans on the Bonneville salt flats, big aerodynamic bricks that he got up to near 200mph back then.
    I also remember reading a big Chrysler ad in BOYS LIFE where their engineers drove a new 1961 Plymouth from Detroit to Chicago and back without a battery connected in the car. The as was to tout it's new alternator, the first of it's kind in a mass produced automobile. A very effective way to introduce their new feature.

  • @johnhpalmer6098

    As nh5er237 mentions, Scott of Coldwar motors took a very rusted out derelict 2 door and totally redid it, but found a good, running pillared 4 door Dart sedan that had a bunch of work done to it and looked "straight" and ran (primered), and had a good, running 318 and auto in it, drilling out the welds where the body met the frame, left the A pillar/cowl/front clip behind and grafted the 2 door Fury hardtop to that working chassis and gradually rebuilt it. Again, he did the Dart the same way and just lifted off the body and plopped the Fury HT to it.
    It's now almost fully complete, plated and is street legal, is blue with white top, that is, light metallic blue with white in the front fender area in front of the front wheels, blue the rest of the fender. It took him a full running chassis, and 2 donor Fury's to make it possible. The car now sports a period correct 318 poly, but not numbers matched as the original motor either was not running, or was replaced long before he got it as it got destroyed in the late 60's or early 70's before being left in a horse pasture for about 50 years to rot. He also has an original, well kept survival '59 Fury 2 door in a light yellow that is absolutely cherry.

    • @corvairjim1
      @corvairjim1 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I noticed that too. Steve has so many details to remember daily about whichever car he's highlighting that day that minutae like that can slip under the radar. That's the way the Petty family worked numbers within their family race team: Papa Lee started off with the 42, when Richard came along, he adopted 43. His son Kyle started his career driving the 44 until his son Adam was killed while driving his #45 in practice at New Hampshire. At that point, Kyle put Adam's 45 on his car in his son's memory. I admit to never being much of a Kyle Petty fan (and I have no idea why), but that was a wonderful memorial for his son. That and building the Victory Junction camp for children with disabilities in Adam's honor. Maybe I ought to rethink the way I feel about Kyle Petty.

    Since my grandpa sold MOPARS from 1946 to 1977 a '58 Fury {just like Christine} was my first car that he sold me at 15 for $300 {same price Christine's owner was asking in the movie years later} because it had been sitting on his lot for quite some time {it was a trade in} & I had been eyeballing it every time I went to see grandpa at work as I would check out all the new cars! I put around $1200 into it {brakes, dual exhaust, seals, new carb, shocks, etc} & it was a great ride until a year later when a drunk ran a light & Tboned my passenger door & she wasnt able to pull herself back together so off to the crusher! My 2nd was a '73 2dr Fury III 360 4bbl that I got from my dads buddy {original owner} when the '58 got totaled ironically for the same $300 & then I got my dads '72 2dr Fury II 318 2bbl when he passed in '79 ✌💖☮

    • @corvairjim1
      @corvairjim1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's something that Dodge and Plymouth returned to a decade later with the Charger Daytona and Road Runner Superbird. Their wing uprights served a dual purpose: not only to get the horizontal "wing" up above the greenhouse and into the airstream, but also to stabilize the car at high speeds. It worked so well, of course, that NASCAR revised the rules to penalize these aerodynamic homologation specials to the point where they were no longer competitive.

    Great job, Steve! Perhaps, at some time, you could discuss "What makes a fin in a car design?" Obviously, the Mopar "Forward Look" involved prominent fins, but in places, might the term be used too loosely? Take the 1957 Chevy - a great design of course, but in the 1950s it wasn't (usually) considered to have fins because they didn't "rise above the beltline" of the car. They had very evident extended rear fenders that gave the impression of fins. I'd like your opinion on this, if you ever get a chance. Thanks for giving me something to look forward to every morning!

    Steve, could I have some model car information, please? A few years ago, I noticed that the chassis of the AMT '57 Chrysler 300-C kit looked the same as the Jo-Han 1960 Plymouth Fury wagon. How could that be correct if the Chrysler was body-on-frame construction and the '60 Plymouth was unitized? I kitbashed the two models to create hemi-powered Fury wagon for an online group build contest (build the car you would enter in the Cannonball cross-country race if it had existed in 1965). The AMT chassis fit the Jo-Han body perfectly. Not wanting to waste anything, I used the leftover Chrysler body and less detailed Jo-Han chassis to build a "what if" 300 Ute. Playing off Chrysler's New Yorker, I dubbed the 300 pickup the "Texan". Neither one ever got finished because other projects came along, but now thai you have me thinking about them again, it might be time to jump back into them. So tell me, if you have these kits, which is right and which is wrong, or are they both correct? My amateurish guess is that, since Jo-Han was a much smaller company, they reused a chassis whose molds they already had from a ChryCo model from before the Unibody era and pressed it back into service beneath the Plymouth. But thats just an uninformed guess.🤔

    The people that claim the 1962 Plymouths and Dodges were hideous clearly never looked at a 1960 or even worse, a 1961. The 1962 was very normal looking compared to those.

      Just plenty of rust in progress. Chrysler products were infamous for being rust buckets as soon as you parked it in your driveway.

    • @rickloera9468
      @rickloera9468 ปีที่แล้ว

      @shootshellz By 1960, the rust problem was pretty much taken car of with the seven step drip and spray. This brought rust inhibiting primer up to the top of the wheel wells. There is a channel called Cold Water Motors. This guy took a 1960 Fury 2 door hardtop out out the woods or wrecking yard and restored it. When he cut the body off a 4 door Dodge that he had, he showed how high up the primer was and how it helped protect the body. Chrysler learned a whole lot after the 1957 model year, which were rusting as they went down the assembly line.
