Very chilled out, very funky. Your mixing/mastering process has always been super interesting to me, like on this track especially it feels like your vocals are mixed pretty far back. Was that a conscious decision on your part (or whoever your sound engineer was)? Regardless, I'd love a future video where you talk about the parts of music-making that come after recording, as I think it's something not oft-discussed. Much love!

That's a great idea! John Schroeder (the guitarist) actually did it this time, we've sort of been taking turns with all our songs :D
The vocals were a weird process for this one. I literally just rolled out of bed and recorded them before eating or drinking anything. So they sound super raspy. And I actually hadn't noticed them being further back in the mix. John mixed this one so he'd be the one to ask...FEEL FREE TO CHIME IN, JOHN!
After relistening, you don't sound especially far back at all, so I'm not sure what I was on about the first time :P

I just rewatched this video and saw this comment! I don't remember consciously mixing them far back but I see what you mean. I think they're probably further back than usual for a handful of reasons. 1. There's so much cool little rhythmic stuff going on in the band on this performance that I wanted to shine through. 2. The vocals on the original recording of this tune sound far back to me. 3. The melody is all over the place range wise on this one so different sections of the song cut through the mix better than others. Hope that's helpful

Man... Nataly... I've been listening to your music since I first heard your cover of My Favorite Things, The Book of Love and then your work on My Terrible Friend. I pre-purchased How I Knew Her, and thoroughly enjoy your voice and music. I almost got a chance to see one of your Pomplamoose shows back in 2014, but it didn't work out.
How you are not a top-40 name yet is baffling. You have all it takes, and have done so much more than many top-40 performers already.
One day, when your music is getting major air-time and you are bigger than the likes of Lana Del Rey or Lady Gaga... I'll have a little pride in knowing how I knew of you way back in the mid 2000s.
P.S. Is there another album from you in the (near) future possible?

The mic in the video is a Telefunken ak47, then we overdubbed with a Shure ksm32 as well :D

Oh! Well if it's for your wife's vocals I HIGHLY recommend a Neumann TLM49. This is what I use for all my own stuff. I love it.

I agree a bit. This song may have be a bit too relaxed in pronunciation and vocal characteristics. Getting some professional voice lessons at a nearby university did help my vocals for clarity, range, and longevity (when I sang 30-40 years ago). Many professional singers get them to help protect their voices for a long career. Warming up with exaggerated chewing motions and exaggerated yawns were my common exercises before recording or performing. It really gave my lips and voice a readiness to sing with more energy and dynamics ... even in the gentle parts of a song. The relaxed vocalization is a style (a la Billy Holiday), but there is a point when it detracts from the art of the song. Having said all that ... I still love the new take on the song (one I used to sing), no need for a retake -- it's great.
