  • A short film I've been forgetting to get to for a number of years now. During a two week trip to the Kruger Park, South Africa in 2016, we were fortunate enough to also spend time exploring the incredible landscape of Blyde River Canyon. This video is one of my first attempts at a cinematic aerial experience, though too be honest I was very inexperience back then. Little did I know about the importance of ND filters, 180-degree shutter angle rules and my piloting is anything but smooth.
However, the beautiful landscape of Blyde River Canyon more than makes up for some of my film-making shortcomings, and allowed me to get a couple of truly fantastic shots.
It's difficult to compare canyons world-wide, however. Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons on Earth, and it may be the largest 'green canyon' due to its lush subtropical foliage. Unfortunately during 2016 the region was experiencing a major draught and resulted in a very dry, hazy and yellow environment. Though, still very beautiful in its magnitude, but a little less green.

This video was produced using the original DJI Phantom 4, and unfortunately no ND filters were used.

Thank you for this, it was lovely to watch. I visited Kruger Park a few years ago, though I never went to this part, and the fantastic colours and lighting are what I remember most and I think you captured that really well.

A great bit of filming, I miss the country and people very much having spent 17 years living and working in Jo-burg,really like the mood you captured.

Very nice. Like your pacing, which means I need to slow mine down. Thanks.

Thanks, I've started to use the tripod mode on my DJI M2P, which has helped a lot!

Hi Jeremy. Came across your video through iKopta's #Mail. Thought you asked a very relevant question and appreciated the answer. Loved your video. Guess it was taken early morning as the light is spectacular. I am visiting South Africa in February and would like to take a DJI MP2. Can you give any advice about taking a drone through Customs, please? Did you need to obtain prior permission from the SACAA?

Despite the fact you were a relative novice at the time, impressive work Jeremy! Its always cool to have older projects like this to watch back and see how far you've progressed.
I just saw your question on Ikopta :) thought I'd swing by and check this out for myself! Really like it. I'd love to visit South Africa some time - I was in Cape Town as a kid but can't really remember any of it. Keep up the good work! One thing I've been experimenting with recently to make my drone videos more cinematic is simply adding the classic black bars top and bottom - it does a lot!

      Thanks, appreciated!
As far as drone videography goes South Africa has some of the most incredible and varied landscapes available. I plan to visit SA again next year and will be taking my drone again.
