STORYLINE:
Queen Elizabeth II invited royalty from across Europe to a service in Windsor on Monday to make her second cousin, King Harald of Norway, a Knight of the Garter.
Britain's highest honour was awarded to King Harald V at a service in St George's Chapel, in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
In the morning, the Queen held a reception and lunch at Windsor Castle for members of the order, including former British Prime Ministers Baroness Thatcher and Sir Edward Heath.
The Queen, a contingent of European Royals and members of the British Royal Family, then processed through the precincts of the Castle to the Chapel for the ceremony.
The Knights and Ladies were dressed in dark-blue velvet robes, adorned with the Garter, Star and Collar, red velvet hoods, worn on the right shoulder, and black velvet bonnets topped with swaying ostrich plumes.
Adding to this year's pageantry were so-called Stranger Knights from foreign royal families at Windsor to celebrate the Queen's 50-year reign.
With the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Princess Royal, Duke of Gloucester and Duke of Kent, were King Harald, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, King Juan Carlos of Spain and Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg - all knights or ladies of the Garter.
The Queen and King of Belgium and Sweden's King and Queen were due to arrive after the ceremony for a Jubilee dinner to celebrate her 50 years on the throne.
Originally, the order of the Garter served the double purpose of bringing together the sovereign and 25 senior Knights who were the country's military leaders as well as establishing a new fellowship in religious worship.
