  • The fingerprints of 19th-century European explorers and settlers can be seen all over Texas, but there isn't anywhere else quite like Castroville. Established by Alsatian immigrants, Castroville is unique with its distinctive historical treasures, French/German/Alsatian food, and beautiful public parks.
    Established in 1974, Haby’s has been baking some of the best cakes, pastries, and bread in Medina County. Located in historic Castroville, it’s the best place to buy quality baked goods, including French bread, croissants, and other heirloom recipe-produced delicacies.
    For over 30 years now, Dziuk’s Meat Market has been proudly serving customers their quality fresh cuts, famous dried meats, and utterly unique (and delicious!) raw meat parisa. They also offer processing services for hunters, as well as lots of groceries and deli offerings.
    Established and run by Louisiana natives and Alsatian descendants, Paris St. Po’Boys offers the best and freshest cajun cuisine in the area. Their po’boys are made with authentic New Orleans bread, and they also offer boudin, alligator, and other creole specialties.
    Landmark Inn tells the story of migration, industry, and preservation in Texas. The site is very large and you can easily spend a whole afternoon exploring the museum and all of the old buildings.
    The Steinbach Hus (house) was originally built between 1618 and 1648 in Wahlbach, France, in the Alsatian style. It took four years to dissemble, relocate, rebuild, and restore the Steinbach Hus. It arrived by truck in Castroville (as a gift from the Alsatian French government) in 1998, and is now open for visitors.
    Castroville Regional Park consists of 126 wooded acres on the banks of the beautiful turquoise Rio Medina (Medina River). The park is surrounded by a walking trail and includes lots of amenities like grills, picnic tables, sports fields, and pavilions. And don’t forget to head up the hill to take in the overlook over the city!

    I grew up in west bexar county literally 10 minutes from the Medina county line. And even with 10+ years of life in that area I had no clue castroville was French

    My mom actually broke her foot at Castroville regional park right along the river a few years ago. My husband and I had to help her to the car and then we had to pack up our fishing gear. My mom's home is right along Potranco in Bexar County and we just pick her up and take her to Castroville at moments notice. My husband and I live on 281 towards Pleasanton.

    Just gonna clarify, I know he says it once, but Alsace is on the border between France and German so it's not just French like he says a couple times. Also too many people have been visiting lately so if you go to the bakery the earlier you go the better, yes it's open late however they run out of all the good stuff, including donuts, by 2 if it's a busy day. Also please don't pronounce it Alsauce 😅

    • @TheDaytripper
      @TheDaytripper  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You've got some points for sure. I always said "Al-Say-s" but it's correctly "All-Sauce.". I know strange. And it's in France but on the German border.

  • @mikekifer1665

      @Av-vd3wk ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You didn’t listen - he mentions clearly starting at 2:14 - it borders Germany.

    • @TheDaytripper
      @TheDaytripper  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Alsace is a region of France, but it borders Germany and the Alsatian language is closer to German, from my understanding. They told me it was "Willkomme" as opposed to "Willkommen"
