Bridgeport pt 6 - Electric Chat - 3 Wire 1HP motor, Huanyang 1.5kw VFD

  • In this video of the Bridgeport I chat about the electrics and how I managed to get it working. The old English electric 1HP motor only has 3 wires unlike most three phase motors, which have 6. Using the 7A Huanyang 1.5kw VFD I managed to wire it up very easily and it runs perfectly on 50hz, and using the original start stop buttons to make it run.

    You need to earth the motor shaft itself if your using a VFD because the PWM pulse wave modulation will cause capacitance on the shaft and build up voltage up to 70volts before it discharges back to earth thru your ball bearings..destroying them..frosting /fluting the ball bearings in as little as 720 hrs of use..ask any HVAC guys using a VFDs on equipment and they will confirm this fact..most home shops never put that many hours on their machines to find out this..but even worse it can also destroy spindle bearings too.. you simply need to add an earth wire to the motor shaft to prevent this..Myself was looking at a spring loaded motor brush riding against the motor shaft to an earth wire so the volts never build up to a level it could discharge randomly back to earth..

    Good video, I have just purchased a Bridgeport with table feed and coolant pump. Would this VF power them aswell?

      Interesting question, I will say the VFD output amperage would need to be able to handle all the components its drawing from, this is something I have been thinking about for the Harrison lathe. Further research and calculations are required. First thoughts are it should be possible. All the best, Matt 👍

    Hi, I have fitted one and set the display in freq mode and turned it to 50. Hope that is ok? What can I now do with the travers as it needs 110 ac. thank you Patrick

      Think you will need a type of transformer for the 110ac. Having not done that as I don't have powered traverses, I'm not sure what you need. All the best, Matt

    I really like those vfds used loads of them on woodworking machinery. What is the voltage of the motor, I would of thought it would be 380v delta with the 3 wires coming out of it. I've had my motor guy bring out the star points of the windings before to make it low voltage. I'm surprised at the motor only being 1hp

      Yes it’s 380v. My aim was to swap the motor out for a 240v one, but Bridgeport have a longer shaft length than you can buy off the shelf. You can get one for a Bridgeport but you them pay the premium because it says Bridgeport. I was surprised to at it being 1hp, but it does what I need it too, so all is good. All the best, Matt

      @@MattChiversWorkshop I would be careful. It sounds like you are running a 380v 3 phase motor from your household 240v single phase via a vfd which changes your household single phase to 3 phase. Unless your vfd also changes the voltage from 240 to 380, which I dont think those vfd's do you might cook your motor. I thought it was weird when you said you couldnt use it for slow speed. When you ran the motor it didn't sound very happy.

    I have a 3hp KBC bridgeport clone, I purchased a 3 hp/2.2kw vfd. This should work or will it overload? I bought a 5hp/4kw unit for my 5hp lathe but now I'm questioning it all. I could always use the 5hp one on the mill and then buy a larger one for the lathe. thoughts?

      Hi, Its always advised to get a bigger hp vfd than the motor your using it on. As long as it is not a lower rating it should be fine. You can always set the VFD lower on parameters so it's not working on full power. The two lathes I have are both 3hp powered by 3hp VFD's and I've had no issues. All the best, Matt

    Hi Matt. Has the motor been rewound 3ph 230v? The standard inverters you get that hook up to a 230v 1ph supply, output 3ph 230v and not 3ph 400v. Rob

      No the motor has not been rewound, these are unusual motors, no star or delta configurations. The motor states 3ph but has input 240v or 400v. I spent a long time looking the motor up and solutions to make it run from a VFD. What I mentioned in the video was the result. The machine has been in operation and performed as it did on 3ph, obviously tweaks and mods can be done overtime if required, but I needed it operational. You will see it working in upcoming steam engine build project videos.

      @@MattChiversWorkshop I've just been having a chat about this motor with the technical team at interdrive. They think it may well have all the normal 6 wires but they are hard wired to star inside the motor. This would be due to the fact the when it was made they never envisaged it being reworked (VFD hadn't been invented). I'm going to have a gentle did this weekend on mine and see if this is the case

      I've just sorted the very same motor. It was as I suggested in my last comment. The motor was hard wired in star. Three of the windibg ends are joined together inside the motor. It was a simple job to separate these and bring all 6 winding ends up and connect in delta. Motor now runs fantastically on the vfd with no loss of torque.     Matt, thanks for the great video. I have just bought the very same mill as yours, a 1964 britush made bridgeport so I'm very glad you are pushing out these videos! How are you getting on with getting VFD? Do you think you would get more torque if you were running it on 440V?

      Hi Colin, the VFD has been fantastic, only thing I’ve noticed recently is the cold weather is effecting the motor, it’s not getting up to speed straight away, it’s taking 2/3 times longer. I’ve also noted a definite slowing when it’s starts cutting, so I’m not sure what’s going on, would definitely get more torque running on 440.
      I’m not taking huge cuts so I not currently worried, I’ll be looking at getting the motor rewound, or a replacement if things decrease further as I think it’s the motor not the vfd.
