"...and did you think I'd love you forever?"
    That line really gets me.

This song is so beautiful to me but the way i hear the lyrics makes me so sad. he seems remorseful for leading them on, causing them pain, being selfish, but at the same time he accepts those traits and tries to move on even though they still exist and could potentially still cause pain. He apologizes but reaffirms those faults, while trying to make the relationship work. It seems doomed to fail, but the feelings he expresses will always be there

A crushing piece of catharsis after having ended a long term relationship. I don't regret anything, but many times I wonder if I'm being selfish, and sometimes I think the weight I carried that lead me to end things for us could never be as heavy as the weight I gave them as I left. It's hard to listen to Sufjan sing "Did you think I'd love you forever?" without wincing a little bit.
Still it's something that had to happen, I couldn't keep pretending, that would only make more pain for both of us. I'm glad we ended on good terms, and I know we'll both move on and find people better suited for us. We both deserve nothing less than pleasure.
Still, we made such a mess together. It was really beautiful.

I had the exact same experience listening to this after breaking up with my long term partner just a few weeks ago. Thank you for making me feel seen

So beautiful... he definitely channels the souls of Elliott Smith and Nick Drake in this three minutes.

This is such a crushing ending to an album of structured emotion...

i think it's hard to acknowledge when relationships end, especially when one clearly wishes to move on and the other is begging them to stay. pleasure principal nurtures my heart like a long needed closure, a long needed hug from a close friend. it sucks because sometimes, you wont always love forever. you wont always love the person you swore to love forever. but it's good to acknowledge that you loved when you did. the awkwardness of announcing you're leaving a relationship when mentally, emotionally you have already left.

Thank you. I love the entire song, but it's great to have it sectioned out for sharing purposes. Some people just can't handle the pure and painfully perfect whole that is Sufjan. AT least not at first. ♥

I wasn't really a fan of Age of Adz. To me, Sufjan's voice was always meant for these types of songs. But Iove his attempts at trying something new. This was my favorite song on the album.
