The chorus… it sounds like anguished sadness. Those moments that, especially in the earlier stages of heartbreak, leave you on your hands and knees. You’re violently grieving. Tears are just raining. You leave behind a literal puddle as you watch snot hang half a foot from your nose. It really feels like those deeply painful moments.
Felt that way at the end of my last relationship, we both did, and holy moly yeah that hits. Sufjan’s art just gets better with age, but not that my experience ever was lesser, just it continues to wizen.
Such a deeply moving and original breakup song. No revenge, no hate, no "baby come back"... Just understanding, empathy and sadness. Almost all songs are about love and yet it is so rare to come across something like this.

His voice is so beautiful, so soft spoken and calming. His lyrics and music are so meaningful and melodic, they harmonize with one another in every song and bring on such strong emotions. So sorry for your loss. I had a similar experience - I rediscovered Sufjan Stevens (specifically Carrie & Lowell) in 2020 after my dad passed away. His music is so cathartic during grief. Hope you’re doing well now :)

I'd just failed a job trial and was walking to catch the bus home when I saw this had come out. I listened to it on the way back to my place and felt like I wasn't alone.

I'd just failed a job trial and was walking to catch the bus home when I saw this had come out. I listened to it on the way back to my place and felt like I wasn't alone.
I hoped I would never really understand the lyrics to this song, so it may remain just a beautiful thing, but I've been glad I know of it because it helps me let go of the tears I gather living through what happened.
