Hi. Good tips. For the aluminum oxide powder, does it matter which grit # to use? Also I’ve found the strops but don’t see two different roughness sides. Thanks
Mine doesn’t say what number, but you will want a “fine” grit for sure. I found I prefer working with a small bit of sturdy leather rather than with a strop. I need to make an updated video. I put together a cleaning kit to make it easier for people to find what I use. You can get it at this link… Coupon code SAVVY gets you a discount too: www.bearwood.com/product8339.html?aff=14
I cannot find aluminum oxide powder in the Netherlands, but I do see cerium oxide powder. Would you think that’s suitable as well? (Apparently that’s mostly used for glass or stone polishing)
Possibly. I imagine it will far gentler, which means it would take more time but might be worth it. Then again, it might not be effective enough. Since aluminum oxide is a knife sharpening powder, I would see if there is a different knife sharpening powder abrasive in your country. If not, I’d give the cerium oxide a shot
The aluminum oxide label doesn’t say how fine the grit is, but I do know it’s a polishing grit, so it’s likely up in the thousands. And the leather strop doesn’t have a grit, but it does have a smooth side, and a rough side.
Here’s what I use: Aluminum oxide powder amzn.to/3I7aaLg Leather Strop amzn.to/3VVcavH The leather strop comes with wax compound, but I prefer the powder. Hope that helps!
I noticed in this video you mentioned using aluminium oxide powder instead of the wax and the powder you use is white. I use aluminium oxide 600 grit powder for my glass etching but it is gray not white, can I use this or do I have to get the white powder which I can only find in 100 gram bags ?
If it is a fine grit and powdery abrasive, you can use it. If it is more like a sand abrasive, it will be very rough on the nibs and wear them out faster. The powder I use comes in a much smaller package. Here’s the powder I use: amzn.to/49gmZOy Hope that helps!
Where can I get my steel wood ? I think 🤔 I need it because my writing ✍️ tip is so bad that I thought I have to buy a new one when it happens like this . Thank you so much for teaching me how to renew my tip ❤️.
I really appreciate if. You can tell me the size of the model number p1339 burning tips,or the size of that wire where you can make your own, I really need help, thanks
Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with that model number. I do have nichrome wire in my Amazon shop that I recommend, but they are differently sized gauges… but in case it helps, here’s the link: www.amazon.com/shop/burnsavvy/list/2E4MPTUD6ZUVI?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_s_ofs_mixed_m Try looking at the manufacturer or supplier’s website for wire gauge info so you can get one in there size you need. Good luck!
Hi my Pyro professor 🤗 you mentioned in your video to use Aluminium Oxide Powder. Im going to order this from Amazon; 250g Bag Aluminium Sulphate. *. 17% Iron Free Alum ~ Is this okay to use for my Nichrome tips please? Thank you ☺️
Great question. I don’t know much about sulfate other than you need it in the garden. 🙃 Look up online if they use sulfate for sharpening knives. You want to get a fine grit so it doesn’t chew up the tips. Or, if it helps, the powder I use is sold here - coupon code SAVVY gets you a discount: www.bearwood.com/product8339.html?aff=14 Or you can get it on Amazon here: amzn.to/3XH3JqB
Good morning my Pyro professor 😊 wow I’m so glad I checked with you. You da best. I looked it up and Aluminium Sulphate is actually used for water purification. So I will order from you. Are you willing to post to England please? 🤗
Excellent tutorial. I feel confident that I can clean my nibs now!
Happy to hear that!
Great info, thank you! I’m curious if zinc oxide powder would also work? (I happen to already have that in hand.)
Good question! I’ve never tried it. If you do, you’ll have to let us know how it goes
Very helpful demonstration, great info as always!
You’re welcome! So happy it’s helpful! 🙌
My new burner has some of these specialist tips and I was wondering if it would be an idea to do a pre uses polish on them ?
Absolutely. They will definitely burn easier if they are polished. Often nibs come pre-polished, but wouldn’t hurt to polish again.
Thanks,
You’re welcome!
Where do you get your aluminum oxide, and what brand is it?
The brand for mine is “wood is good” and here’s a link. amzn.to/43cNnH3
I was already polishing with a strop. And I pick up the steel wool trick in your last live on Facebook.
Perfect! 👏

What grit aluminum nitrate do you use and is there a grit on the leather strap?
Oops aluminum oxide.

What kind of aluminum oxide do you use
A fine powdered aluminum oxide

Hello I have a question ? Where can I purchase a small amount of the aluminum oxide powder so I can polish my wood burning tips and nibs.

I use a brass "tooth brush"
Yes that’s a common method for getting the big stuff off. The leather gets the fine carbon build up off of there though
Where do I find the cleaner?? It’s not easy finding products
Here is a link to what I use: amzn.to/3ODway9
@@BurnSavvy Thank you so very much!!
Happy to help!
Carbon build up is so annoying, definitely affects shading alot, great vid and tips 👍✌
No kidding! And thank you 😊
Aww I don’t have those kind of tips :(
This should work for any nib - all solid points and all wire nibs. Give it a try!
@@BurnSavvy I did it and it worked :D TYSM
