    I have had this lens for a year now. I am always blown away by its sharpness every time I use it. Owned Canon EF 85 f1.8, 85 f1.2L, 85 f1.2L II, EF 85 f1.4L IS, Sony GM 85mm f1.4 and honestly this lens is the best I ever had. Small and sharp and f1.4! It is crazy!!!

    Genuinely one of the best portrait lenses I've ever seen. The bokeh is creamy, the colours dazzling, toggleable click, minimal technical issues that would bother me even with the test cards. Excellent review Christopher. It's always a good day when you've got another lens review up, if only to dream about which lenses to buy and enjoy your always breathtaking photography.

    Wow, ive been very impressed by pretty much all the Sigma Art lineup but this is above and beyond. Making it smaller and lighter but with equal or arguably greater image quality is no small feat. Im especially impressed by the lack of color fringing at 1.4. I love the choice to have an optional aperture ring too.

      The GM might be getting outdated, but the performance of the lens is impeccable. This sigma is great, but has many issue still that may make a bad option compared to the GM. 1) focus breathing 2) pretty bad pin cushion distortion 3) poor vingetting and fall off.
      Super sharp indeed.. but you gotta give it to sony for producing such quality glass like 5 yrs ago.

      @@jaschana2220 other than the distortion, I don't think the GM outperforms this lens in any category. Not to trash on the GM - I know rendering is a pretty vapid comparison, but I preferred the GM in side by side testing from some website - still, it has to be admitted that the Sigma generally outperforms the GM on a technical level.

      Well, other lens brands only love making lens for Sony because Sony is the only camera brand that opened source code for lens brand making products for them while Fuji, Canon, Nikon don't do that. This is why Sigma, Tokina, Viltrox and Tamron are making many very good lenses for Sony while it is too less for other camera brands.

    Sigma clarified during the presentation that they were deliberately leaving vignetting and distortion for in-camera corrections as the optical elements required for handling these aberrations lead to a significant weight increase. I'm personally a big fan of this approach and hope more manufacturers do the same and make lenses lighter without really compromising more important aspects like sharpness, bokeh, CA, coma etc.

    Sigma has nailed it finally while still choosing to not fix aberrations that are easier to correct. This lens with the 35 1.2 would be an amazing combo. Currently I am running the 35 1.2 and 105 1.4 and totally loving it. If sigma jumps on the RF mount (highly doubt they will just like nikon Z mount), it would be incredible. They would need to redo their lenses possibly unless they release the adapted versions. Literally what makes sony mount so attractive to so many are the 3rd party lens options. Sigma is just killing it! I am sure I will end up getting me a copy of this awesome lens to carry around easier. Glad I waited and didn't buy the GM. This almost makes the GM obsolete now at this price point IMO.

I know that full frame is better in bokeh but considering the compression we get from the crop factor on apsc in the 85mm distance will that result in more bokeh than using it in full frame body?

    Very nice indeed :)) Been looking for this lens, really love that they added the aperture ring. This is really a mirrorless standard 85mm 1,4f that, not the bulky heavy outdated DSLR designed lenses they were selling before. The big and heavy 85mm ART was one of the reason I sold it and bought mitakon 50mm 0,95f, although different lenses with different purposes, but that 85mm was damn heavy, shooting weddings or other occasions, you could really feel its tool on your wrists and that awkward weight distribution when you mount it on Sony A7 series body... nah hat design was purely for DSLR shooters... And this one looks very appealing.

    There is a now a new game changer when it comes to lens choices. lightrooms new upgrade for noise reduction. Why does it effect lens purchases. ? . Well for most photigraphers lightroom is a most have . I purchased the older sigma 35 DG art lens to use on my z 7.2 camera. I have the 24-120 z zoom but really i love prime .I was not impressed with the sigma 35 lens it does not perform well till you get over f 5 .6 and dies again after f 11. However the lightroom noise reduction when applied made a difference to some of the final picture quality.I Will be keeping the 35 for now and learn to work with its limitations. I know you only test lenses . However this new feature in light room does in a way a add on upgrade to picture quality, enough I would say to give some less expensive lens a step up. May be after or along side picture quality chat review a test via using the up graded noise reduction function , this would improve the lenses performance ..... I have personally seen some photos I would not normally have thought of using turned into nice photos ... After all it's the finished item in the end of a production line we are all after this new update is a means towards an end not a end in its self. Thanks for reading this.

    If this lens had been available when I purchased my Sony 85mm f/1.8; I would have selected it. The Sony G-master or older Sigma 85mm f/1.4 are too large or my tastes. However, since I own the 85mm Sony f/1.8, I think that I will remain with my present lens.

    • @vivalasvegas702
      @vivalasvegas702 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sigma must update or further refine their AF algorithms to match Sony, not the other way around IMO. I highly doubt, it’s the Sony phase detect problem, especially if it works fine with native glass. If that is fix, Sigma has a winner in its hands, hopefully RF mount gets it too.

    It's nice to see you doing pre-release testing as other bigger reviewers: it means you're gaining reputation in this space. I believe it's well deserved.
    For what concerns the lens, I like it a lot, although being on APS-C I'm probably not the primary target of this lens.
    Anyway, distortion corrections may degrade corner sharpness, so that's a thing I would have liked to see better explored/clarified in this review.
    The optics look fantastic, and I like they reduced purple highlighting. I believe that this lens will be a great fit for a Sony a7R IV, but I'm wondering why they're not pushing out F/1.2 stuff (especially considering they are native on L-mount and need to compete with native RF glass).
    I believe they'll also redesign other full-frame lenses, but as an a6100 user, I mostly hope that they'll pay more attention to the APS-C market: their 16mm F/1.4, 30mm F/1.4 and 56mm F/1.4 for APS-C are great lenses, but we need more options, especially talking about zoom lenses.
    For example, they haven't revamped their 18-35mm F/1.8 on mirrorless mounts, and there are no 16-55mm F/2.8 or 55-200mm options. I'd also like something wider than 16mm and longer than 56mm (like 12mm-equivalent and 105mm-equivalent).

    Yesterday I've tested Eye AF and focus speed on the SIGMA 85 1.4 DG DN ( Sony ). I have to admit I am quite disappointed. When the subject walks slowly towards me ... out of 10 photos, only 2-3 were in focus (all shoot on F 1.4). I've tried the lens on 3 different Sony bodies (a73, a74, and a7s3) and everywhere the same thing. I also tried it with different AF settings and speeds, good lighting conditions, backlight, etc. In comparison... the Sony 85 1.8 with the same settings ( shoot at F 1.8 ) and the same conditions missed only 1 photo of 10. Does any other Sigma owner have the same case?

      @@bentierney-morrison5881 I still hope they release a new 35mm 1.4 dg dn, because that 35mm 1.2 is a monster - it's closer in size to the old 85mm 1.4 dg hsm than this new one. That's even more imposing when you consider that in a given line of lenses (Sony 1.8 FE, Nikkor 1.8 S, Sigma 1.4 DG HSM Art), the 85mm tends to be considerably bigger than the 35mm. Other metrics like price aside, the sheer weight of that 35mm 1.2 is prohibitive in a way neither this 85mm 1.4 dg dn nor a potential 35mm 1.4 dg dn could ever be.

      Be aware that third party lenses are often limited by using only EF lense registry numbers that basically lead to those lenses behaving like old EF lenses. Depending on which number is used, they can even be limited in focus area and other things. Not to forget that features like high speed viewfinder, focus stacking, lense corrections or firmware update via camera won’t work.
      Inder this circumstances I would better wait for forthcoming cheaper native RF lenses like the new 85RF IS

      They would need to reverse-engineer all the X-mount electronics. Wouldn't be easy.

    • @trym2121
      @trym2121 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TerabitTech Wrong and 'figured out' isn't the correct term. E-mount has been open from early days. L-mount is sigma own alliance.
      X-mount recently has been opened again as well. Officially, open for other manufacturer which probably translate to licensing. The first proof is Viltrox/Tokina 85mm for x-mount and recently the 23/33 1.4 lens. Sigma doesn't need to do reverse engineering if they want to adopt their lenses to xmount

    The AF performance is unacceptable. Hopefully it will work substantially better with final firmware and a newer camera otherwise that's a deal breaker. The focus breathing also looks really bad, and that is something that will not improve with firmware etc. I don't think focus breathing is a big deal for a lens like this but it's worth looking into further to see how bad it really is.

However, after using the A7III so long now, I think I've forgotten how far Sony has come, haha. Anyway, sorry the comment came across negatively. A better way to state it would have been to say that the AF didn't compare favorably to it's competition, but after seeing it perform on newer bodies, this is clearly not the case.
