When the geese are close to laying even the females will lower their heads and walk toward you while hissing. The males, no matter how friendly they are to you now, will get aggressive. Hold your ground and walk toward them just talking to them. They will, hopefully, walk away. Watch your back though. Provide a nest of deep hay in their coop area. They will like a clean area for laying eggs, although their dirty feet will dirty the eggs. They bury their eggs under the hay so you’ll have to dig through the hay around the nest area.
Hello Sarah and Kevin. I raised hundreds of Standard Toulouse geese and had a large Sears red wood wet hatch incubator. My geese started laying in mid February at one year old. I put a magic marker dot on the first one and left the first one in the nest. Mine did lay in a cushy hay nest they rearranged. They lay every other day. Then I started collecting them in a cool place, covered by a damp towel. When I had enough, I wrote the date on the side of the eggs. 28 days for a hatch. I hand turned the eggs twice a day ( dates up > dates down, so I knew I had turned them. The goslings have an egg tooth and will start tapping on the large end on the 26th day. If I gently tap on the shell and say, "VEE!" They will answer and start tapping like crazy! Pretty cool. They will bond to you when hatched. Make sure you candle them up to two weeks. A bad egg can explode in the incubator. Best of luck. ~ Diane
@ritamcartt-korton283- You are welcome. I really enjoyed raising geese. Another tip. They do not see well after dark. Be sure to get them inside, as they will just plunk themselves down and be a target for predators. Mine mated for life and protected other goslings in the group. Have fun! ~ Diane
BTY! My biggest complaint with this kind of site is that not many say where n the hell they live ! If I'm in zone 1 I sure can't benefit if I'm in zone 6! You do a fair job , thanks for that. LOL. Like I said I'm only 73 shit almost 74 years old and I hope I live long enough to know what , what is shit I don't know🤣🤣🤣
Raspberries need to be able to plow around them to control the spread of the runners. Our raspberries are all over our yard because we have no way to control them in our small yard. Just warning
They start laying around 9months old. From April until September. Give them more protein if they don’t start laying soon. May wanna worm them with daematcious earth food grade or Cayenne pepper. Best of luck!!
Most breeds of geese start laying around 9 months starting in spring season. However, fertility rates in young geese tend to be low not much above 20% in their first year. Geese mature around two years old and from 2-4 years old are their best laying and fertility years. Laying and fertility drop off significantly after year 5 even though geese generally live 10-15 years and longer in some cases. Commercially we cull our flocks at the beginning of year 5 unless they are a rare species or a species that is difficult to reproduce. Good luck!
The ones who get the tick bite that makes someone allergic to red meat can still eat ostrich. So instead of cows, you'd just change to ostrich. Lol my step brother has that.
You should check out Cog hill farm and how he did his berry bushes on a trellis system and dedicated vines or shoots. It's awesome and the maintenance and harvesting is so easy.
I use dog crates in my coop and my ducks lay inside those crates In fact my ducks will run back in the coop if they need to lay an egg My geese are Pomeranian saddleback Stella was born April 4/2023 She was raised with a few ducklings. Shortly after those ducks started to lay eggs in November my stella also started ti lay eggs. She also used one of my bigger dog crates She laid through dec. Then it got really cold and she stopped. Stefano Creatini did a video on youtube about a gentleman growing in the high desert of Colorado and he has amazing grapes, he says the plants, grape vines don't like the metal structures for support. He uses wooden structures for support. He says the metal gets hot and the plants vines do not like the hot metal. If you get time I would watch his video! "Permaculture garden in the high desert"
Curious about your raised bed containers that you set up on top of your ground cover fabric. Great Idea! Keeps the weeds from growing into the beds. Wondering about moles, voles etc. Can they get through the fabric? I have seen Doug on Doug and Stacy off grid homestead lay down hardware cloth in the bottom of the bed to keep burrowing animals out. Also, any concerns the ground cover fabric may create an anarobic condition at the bottom? Especially if you use kugaculture (spelling is wrong I am sure) material such as logs, branches, leaves etc to partially fill the bed so you don't use so much expensive top soil or compost?
Don't blame you for not wanting to pick wild berries with all of the ticks! Where we are in Oregon lyme disease is carried by ticks...a very serious infection as well.
I had White Chinese geese years ago and they were never aggressive toward me but would chase my teenage sons. The gander was better about that after I gave him a soccer ball to play with. When they started laying eggs, it was always in the corner of their shelter and they covered them with bedding.
I don't recommend weed fabric around grapes and berries. I did this in texas and regretted it because the grass grows right up through and the little sucker plants have a hard time growing. the grass won't hurt them; you can put a tin can around the base of the grapes if you want to weed eat around them for asthetics
I agree. Once the grapes become established and are tall enough, pasture the geese in them. Wait until the vines are thick enough the geese can't chew them to pieces.
The best thing we ever did was plant a row of blueberries over 30 years ago. We get tons and some for the neighbors. It was only 10 plants but they spread underground and sent up more shoots.
My son-in-law got a tick bite that caused him to be severly ill and he found out the hard way that not only is he allergic to red meat (including wild game) but also sea food....he has to carry an epi pen with him at all times in case he accidently eats something at a restaurant that is cross contaminated. that has happened several times and one time he almost died from the allergic reaction. Your little Waddlesville area is ADORABLE....! Your farm is SO PRODUCTIVE and SO ORGANIZED...! The new chicks are SO CUTE and a GOOD ADDITION to the farm...! I can't wait to see how your NEW GARDEN area works out ...! Thank YOU for letting us tag along with you today...! ❤🐔❤ Shelly
As you know, ticks love berry bushes. Chickens like to eat ticks. Could you let your chickens into the orchard area occasionally to clean up the area or are there too many hawks and owls?
Geese are goog watchdogs when they got noisy and you checked for eggs possibly they noticed the raptor that showed up at .51 and 5.37 in the video , just if you missed it. Precautions to be taken.
Sarah, I have one Crested Polish that I got from a neighbor last year. I named her Tina (Tina Turner) and I call her TT. She is The funniest chicken and is Always so happy to see me whenever I am outside.
Great to see the upgrades and getting ready for spring. Always seems to come like a speeding train , always gets there quicker than you think. Always seems like gardening, you have everything planned out, then bang, your 2-3 weeks behind. Anyway guys, looks like ya'll are getting things in hand, ready to go. Kevin, chiggers love me as well. When I know I'm going to be at risk, the clothes I'm going to wear all get soaked or sprayed down heavy with Pine Sol, it really seems to help. Good luck guys, keep an eye on the clock, it always runs faster when you get a little behind. God bless ya'll and stay safe out there on the homestead. You don't need any delays.
My geese laid their eggs at all hours And they hid their nests, or tried to. At one point they were even laying along the edge of the water in our pond. And like others you have heard from, some of my geese began laying at around a year of age. I've had them lay in the Spring and all through the Summer. I have new geese now, (an Eagle took my female Toulouse 🥵) I have African Grey Geese now and they are young so it will be fun to see when they begin to lay. I got these geese as 2 week old goslings just before Thanksgiving last year, 2023, from a lady a few miles from me. She was shocked that her goose was laying in November.
I had heard that they don’t make good companions due to their different soil needs, thriving typically in different pH. Planted together in the same type soil, it wouldn’t surprise me if one grew better than the other.
Have you thought about guinea foul joining in waddlesville? guinea foul have a favorite food and you will be very happy to hear it is ticks, they love to eat ticks and clear out areas very well up here in canada.
Up here in Iowa,(council bluffs area)I drank buttermilk and I also eat alot of pickled foods( pickles, saurkraut), and I haven't had any issues with ticks or chiggers, maybe that will help? The chick's are soon cuute!!!😊❤
I remember my Mom and stepdad planted 6 tame blackberry plants in a small bed about 15 feet long and provided a simple wire fence for them to climb and run. They tied the branches as they grew to the fence. The first year was ok productive and after pruning at the right time, the second year provided 26 gallons of blackberries! And they have exploded from there. Unless you plan to sell the berries, I would limit the plants. They are prolific. And I agree about the chiggers. The tame blackberries with their lack of thorns and open growing to not encourage chiggers, they are great! It's nice to pick gallons of the wonderful very big berries without scratching your skin raw from chiggers as a result.
Either paint your fruit tree trunks white or put the white wrap around them. That will cool down the tree sap and keep them from flowering before it really gets warm. I don't know what type of paint but here in apple country in the Central Washington State we do this for our fruit trees.
Our wild berries grow beautifully where I live and I love picking some every year. Last year I didn't get to them in time because not only are you at the mercy of mother nature but you are also at the mercy to all the birds. Lol. I'm hoping I can get to them this year before the birds have their feast.
As a fellow goose lover...Maybe the conflicting info has something to do with laying/going set to full hatch/successfully parenting. Laying eggs could definitely happen at a year. Going set - maybe...as well as varying levels of success as well as parenting to varying levels of success. Best chance for geese to successfully accomplish a full step by step process from lay to gosling independence from their parents (typically) is by 3 years old. Geese are extremely family oriented. Your entire flock will actually work together to protect the goslings.
My husband has Alpha Gal.. We have 1.2 acres and most of it is woods. Luckily he is not super reactive. As long as he stays away from the meat he is okay. He still eats cheese and is not fume reactive. Missouri and Kentucky are in the top 5 states with Alpha Gal victims.
I live not too far from you in Illinois near St. Louis. Watching your video this morning, Saturday, when you posted it looking out my window with the 4 inches of snow we got yesterday I had to chuckle because I know that you are likely experiencing the same yo-yo weather we are. Yesterday morning it was nice and clear then the heavy snow came giving us about 4 inches of snow. Good thing you kept the baby chicks in the house for a few days. I always enjoy your videos. 💕💕
Good luck, I'm pretty sure you'll get eggs ... I received 4 Embden geese and 4 Buff Geese last year in May (born 8th May 2023). They are separated from the ducks right now as they went a little crazy (breeding season - they're constantly mating in the kiddie pool). They've started laying eggs on the last day of January 2024.... So far we received 20 eggs from them. I'm not 100% sure but I believe we got 3 geese of each breed and 1 gander. So if you have geese, you should be getting eggs soon! :) I got the eggs in the incubator and hoping for them to hatch, all the new eggs being laid from now on I will let the geese sit on them to hatch some goslings. I'm based in Arkansas, Ozark Mountains. The freezing temps didn't deter the geese so far :). Best of luck!
Good morning! You guys are taking advantage of the warm weather, and I took advantage of the cool weather to get my stuff done. It only took me a few years to learn that laziness leads to gardening in the heat. 😆 So, this year, I worked on my garden a little at a time, and got all of the heavy work done, before the spring heat sets in. I already have a few seeds in the ground, and the Lord has sent rain for us this weekend. So now, I can sit back, relax for a couple of days, and enjoy these fruits of my labor.
I am grateful for a father-in-law who prunes and ties up my grapes each spring! The warm weather coming to Michigan means that it's time yo tap the maple trees and make syrup.
I raised French Toulouse Geese for 20 years and they would lay in one nest only and only at a certain time of year, breeding season. My ducks layed every morning and didn't need a nest, they layed in the coop. I loved my Toulouse Geese, they were wonderful and produced great babies that grew quickly and were ready for harvest quickly. French Toulouse will hiss but never attacked anyone. I had Chinese Geese and had to give them away as they would attack my children. You may want to put out some straw for the geese, my geese would not lay on the ground, they only laid in a "nest" of straw or hay. My Toulouse mated for life, I don't know if your geese do that.
We love our raspberries. Fabulous fresh and then all winter from the freezer. Next time I will add some golden raspberries so I have berries later in the season also since they are fall bearing.
"Happy Valentine's Day Sarah...T.U.Kevin, they are adorabley cute& so excited to watch them grow with you into beautiful Silkie's. Such a wonderful gift indeed. Stay inside little one's. 🏠We have snow and it is too cold at night also. 🥶 🐥🐥🐥 🏠 take care🍇
Good morning guys. Has the new baby chicks come in yet? Cant wait to see them. Our weather here in southern Az as you know is crazy too. One week is in the 50’s during the day, then next week its 70’s. Crazy stuff. Our nights are still in the 30’s and 40’s. Had some nice rain a week or so ago. I love winter out here. The desert is crazy. As they say, “you can suffocate during the day and freeze to death at night”. The ducks and geese are so vocal. Love to hear them. I miss having my farm animals. Right now its city life. I cant wait to return to the farm life. I need animals in my life. Lol. Love watching. 💜 God bless 🙏🏻. Awe, the new babies are so cute. Enjoy them. 🌻🌞

Thank you SO much for sharing this information! I have Geese that should start laying soon. Wonderful information! GOD bless

the country of Poland, deserve the Nobel peace prize for helping their neighbor. Glad you picked up chicks home safe!
We notice in the first of the video you had an eagle in the background. Here they are hard on yard birds.
I was told red raspberry and black berry bushes shouldn’t be near each other because of cross pollination
Those little chicks are so cute. Kevin gave you a wonderful Valentine’s Day present.
Adding straw will induce the geese to build a nest. They need lots of it to build it up nice and big. Shavings won't cut it for a goose nest.
You should check out Cog hill farm and how he did his berry bushes on a trellis system and dedicated vines or shoots. It's awesome and the maintenance and harvesting is so easy.
I use dog crates in my coop and my ducks lay inside those crates

I got her a gander in dec who is almost 2 years old
They started to mate within 2 weeks and are still in mate mood
I did see her eating the oyster shells yesterday
Maybe she will start laying again
She was very young when she started to lay egg as well as way out of season
I believe her being brought up with ducks is why she started when they did
Putting in some kind of covered area in the coop or pen area maybe help to encourage egg laying for nesting area
They like bedding they can build up to make the nest and cover the eggs
One thing I have read is the first year eggs often don’t bring in babies
I did try to incubate the last 4 eggs and none started
Maybe to young yet
My sister-in-law runs embden geese
Her last year babies are also starting to mate now and the female has started to lay eggs this past week
Just want to add I found a goose egg today
So I was correct on why she was eating oyster shells again
I’ll incubate every egg I get abc hopefully we get some offspring !

I LOVE the look of the raised bed garden. Really beautiful!
A tin can? What a good idea!
@@darlajohnson2020may be a split section of 4" Pvc pipe would work too.
I would have a 3 foot break in the middle of the berry lines so that you don't have to walk all the way to the end to get to another row.... :)
Great idea!
How about goats for the chicken moat? You can even rent goats to eat down vegetation
The best thing we ever did was plant a row of blueberries over 30 years ago. We get tons and some for the neighbors. It was only 10 plants but they spread underground and sent up more shoots.
Consider growing some elderberries also
Yes you have a need for very acid soil for blueberries. You are not really in blueberry country. 😊
I can't wait for these babies to grow up and show off their goofy cuteness!!!

You guys are awesome week after week we share morning coffee time ❤
In two shots, there was a large hawk or eagle checking out waddlesville, you probably saw it, but might contribute to some of the noise.
Kevin, I’m begging you lol , do an updated storm, shelter video 👍🏻
🌪 Tornadoes will be coming soon
I wonder if wild birds 🦅 will fly in and eat up 🆙 all the berries and grapes 🍇 just a question we’ll good luck 🍀
Fun video to watch. I think we’re all starting to dream of spring. God Bless!
Was that a Hawk or a Eagle checking out Waddlesville?
Love you guys so much!! It's always a joy to watch you out and about on your land showing us how things are going. Thank you
God bless
Great job everyone and the new Silkies are going to be a lot of fun to watch. Stay safe and hope the geese start laying eggs for you . Fred.
I saw two hawks fly over Waddlesville on this episode, Might watch the silkies. just sayen.
Is that a hawk I see flying around in the background 😮?

Kevin, chiggers love me as well. When I know I'm going to be at risk, the clothes I'm going to wear all get soaked or sprayed down heavy with Pine Sol, it really seems to help.

Maybe stupid question. When you get rainy weather, do you do anything to keep your birds feed dry? I don’t see y’all fermenting feed.
I’ve heard that you have to put raspberries and black berries 100 ft apart to prevent cross pollination. Might be worth checking out
No,just row apart is fine.
Just keep different varieties of raspberries apart because they will cross pollinate, red , black, and gold. Blackberries and raspberries don’t
I had heard that they don’t make good companions due to their different soil needs, thriving typically in different pH. Planted together in the same type soil, it wouldn’t surprise me if one grew better than the other.
Thank you Kevin & Sarah. Prayers. God Bless you all in Love. Maranatha ! ( shared to f/b )
Enjoyable video! Well done. The fruit trees look great.
❤ I love baby chicks! They remind me of my childhood in Puerto Rico! Just the cutest things you can see!❤❤😊
Nice hawk flying by at the 50 sec mark !
We are expecting a double batch of cicadas this year so you may want to think of some sort of protection for your young fruit trees.
Cuteness overload baby chicks 🐤

So excited about the berries you will be growing. Such good jam and pies coming up.😅😅
Yum yum❤
Are you covering your orchard trees with netting to protect against cicadas coming?
I just love your channel and I have been here for a minute or two. (smile)
Kevin and Sarah thanks for sharing giving us the updates about some things happening on the farm 😞 continued prayers peace and blessings 🙏
I'm only 73 years old but it looks like you are doing a lot of good things!😅
You need an area for asparagus
Why don’t you go and dig up a few wild plants to add in to your row?

Our wild berries grow beautifully where I live and I love picking some every year. Last year I didn't get to them in time because not only are you at the mercy of mother nature but you are also at the mercy to all the birds. Lol. I'm hoping I can get to them this year before the birds have their feast.

I love that you're keeping it real! Weeds and watering are a never-ending battle. Your animals are such a joy to watch!

Yesterday morning it was nice and clear then the heavy snow came giving us about 4 inches of snow. Good thing you kept the baby chicks in the house for a few days. I always enjoy your videos. 💕💕
Get a couple of goats. They cut grass very well
Sheep more than goats.
I used to have Sebastapol geese and they liked to lay in the water. Don't forget to check the pool for goose eggs.
How far is town? Perhaps you should get a little rake to find the eggs.
Only concerns about the compost pile is the chickens will eat all the worms in there 💯
Good morning!
Those chicks are so cute!!!
I am grateful for a father-in-law who prunes and ties up my grapes each spring! The warm weather coming to Michigan means that it's time yo tap the maple trees and make syrup.
Won't the Polish and Silkies cross-breed? Just curious whether it matters to you. The progeny could be very interesting.
Always great and interesting videos you two have. Excited to watch your berrie plants to get going
Sarah, what kind of tree is that behind you in the chick brooder room?
can't hear him but can hear her better, just wanted you to know that. love watching.
what bird is that at around the 50 min. mark flying by behind you?
So exciting to look forward to so much interesting new things.
Blueberries, huckleberries, honeyberries (haskap), and seaberries !!!
Good Morning from snow covered east central Indiana, Brrr
Your new babies are so cute. Can't wait to see them running around with the Silkies! Have an amazing weekend.
Mine laid at a year old last year, so last year's should lay this year ...usually start mid February
I love Waddlesville!!!!
The geese are beautiful. Next time you process ducks can you bring us along? I’d love to learn.
Thank you from The Netherlands

Enjoy them. 🌻🌞
