Because the creation of parliament itself was based on the Treaty Of Waitangi. Then almost immediately after the signing of the treaty, the crown breached its own agreements and those effects are still felt today.

People whose whanau were either forced to side with the British for fear of Raupatu, or those whose whanau were shamed into forgetting themselves, their reo, their culture, their identify and their mana, and that way of thinking has been passed down through generations, and is now you. I used to be like you, until I educated myself. I learned my reo, i learned who I truly am, and thats PROUD TO BE MAORI. All you have to do is educate yourself. Oh please! There's certainly no love lost between Te Pāti Māori and Labour either! Rawiri isn't interested in any partnership - even if it was mentioned in the Treaty (which it isn't). He wants Māori to be the sole government of the country.
