Context: at the beginning of the film, Keanu took the recess and came back to defend his teacher client because he wanted to win at all cost. He wins the case but demolished the girl. After the trail, he was hired by the devil himself. Keanu goes through his character development (bulk of the film) and realizes that there is more to life than just winning.
The devil sends him back in time and he gets a do-over, but this time around, Keanu decideds to not defend his teacher client in keeping with his moral code.

you almost have the plot. At the recess, he goes to the bathroom and takes off his ring. Then, he goes into the day dream of all the crazy events. He then wakes up, puts his ring back on, the recess is over, and goes back into the courtroom. He then no longer represents the client.

He didn't get sent back in time. The entire movie was a visionof the consequences of his choices. He was being tempted through his vanity but ultimately rejected it.
You also missed the most important part.
When he chooses to reject the temptation and betray his client, he is then tempted AGAIN with the interview and promises of being a star.

One day you will learn EVERYONE:
Protects & Serves means: the institutional-industry will protect itself from all extinction and the the paycheck earner (you) will serve that institution's paycheck for which your paycheck stands.
      The paycheck receives #1 loyalty.
      Even you.
Number two (I hope you will not personally experience:)
"The law is not about truth, justice, or the American way."
It is about justifying paychecks at all costs to reason and Reality.
For example: "To tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?"
      * The law allows the truth to be "stricken from the record."
      * YOU are under an oath regarding the truth -- and the institutional-industry is capable of causing you consequences.
You, however, CAN NOT strike the truth from the record NOR can you impose consequences upon the institutional-industry.
      "Your" truth becomes "their" truth.
That means, Their Opinion is your truth.
      * The Modern, Western court system hasn't changed since it's Medieval creation.
90% doubt STILL goes to the higher caste.
That means the King (government) and Royalty (Corporations) can compete with each other.
But the Nobility (rich class), the Tradesmen (middle business,) Landlords (small business,) Peasants (working class poor), Serfs (family dependents/children,) and Riff-raff (diabled, orphaned, homeless, unproductive, etc.) ALL have to "Remember you place!" and suffer the higher caste gets the 90% doubt.
      No change.
If you don't think it does, ask every Father regarding "Custody Court." SHE gets the 90% doubt.
And HE can get even HER punishment to keep the institutional-industry's knob-polished.
They are certainly NOT going to punish the Mother and cause the child's home to be in upheaval!
The "Law" is only about just-us -- not YOU, just-us.

I saw this film in theaters, and it ended my friendship. I started having a panic attack after the girl on the stand said, "I didn't want to be the only one" and tried to leave the theater as discreetly as possible. My so-called best friend got pissed, tried to physically restrain me, and screamed about how she was "sick of hearing about [my] trauma shit (even though I'd said nothing)" and then demanded I reimburse her the price of her ticket because I had apparently ruined her time. We'd snuck in and therefore paid nothing to see the film, so I don't know what she was on about. Little did I know that Keanu Reeves and Heather Matarazzo had just given me the greatest gift: Freedom from one of the most toxic friendships I'd ever have. To do so in the middle of the trial with a witness on the stand is malpractice.
It screams "yep. He's guilty, alright. I give up" to the jury.
This is a miscarriage if justice, regardless the nature of the crime. Cause for overturning any conviction.
The defendant would have a legitimate cause for mistrial and disbarment of Keanu

Incorrect. Lawyers do not have a legal obligation to stay locked in with a client. Judges can deny a lawyer’s request to withdraw, but this case falls under a specific type of withdrawal that 99% of judges would be fine with: if an attorney finds the client so morally repugnant that the attorney is incapable of representing them effectively due to disgust, then they can withdraw. This type of withdrawal will almost always be allowed because due process requires effective representation.

It's important that everyone has a lawyer who would do their absolute best to defend their client even if he thinks he's guilty. It's your constitutional right and we have it for a reason. If no later who represent someone suspected of a crime then the police gave no incentive to follow the law and gather evidence and follow the proper procedure.

But to do so in the middle of the trial with a witness on the stand is malpractice. He is way past jumping ship and crying "can't get my hands dirty" by this time of the trial.
This is malpractice, guilty or not.But to do so in the middle of the trial with a witness on the stand is malpractice. He is way past jumping ship and crying "can't get my hands dirty" by this time of the trial.
