Last summer, a wine blogger titled a post "Vicky Osterweil: The Worst Person In The World!" (that's his capitalization and punctuation, not mine). This seems like overreach. However, this “tough talk” featured some of the worst ideas and interpretations of history and society that I have heard in quite some time, and they typify a certain irresponsible, self-indulgent parochialism that may land us in a backlash that makes Trump seem like the good old days. Kudos to the Hannah Arendt Center for giving a platform to speech as offensive as this, all the same; for the best response to dangerous proposals is not to silence them but, rather, to allow them to be heard so that they can be countered by better, more rational ones.

Incredible discussion! The Q+A was exactly what I was looking for after reading In Defense of Looting and Osterweil's answers are very passionate and really motivate me to join the fight! I hope to meet her in an anarchic space of encounter some day. Also fuck most of the comments under any video she is a part of, Osterweil deserves so much more respect and I'm glad that the people in the video engage with her ideas with real curiosity and not vicious dismissal.

These arguments are essentially the modern equivalent of Malcolm X and the Black Panthers who saw violence as the only means to achieve short term goals. The reason Dr. King is so revered is because he achieved long term goals that many considered impossible, through an unwavering commitment to nonviolence. Osterweil has selectively taken Dr. King's off-the-cuff notions when speaking with journalists toward the end of his life and bent the context to fit her narrative.
Although I do agree with you that many of the people in the comments are simply resorting to ad hominem attacks instead of thoughtfully considering what Osterweil has to say.

I thought it was against the law to incite violence? Shouldn’t this person be arrested and before a court for doing so?

A "professional agitator" who critiques non-violence... but of course! Cant wait till he uses his twisted reasoning to beat up women who refuse to affirm his delusions.

Why is the Hannah Arendt Center not deleting transphobic comments under this video?

It's actually embarrassing seeing comments like this, looking to get comments deleted under a video called "tough talks". I think you should grow up.
