I carry my Glock21 concealed appendix style, and keep it as my nightstand gun. I’m 6’6” so it fits me well. The accuracy of this gun is amazing. But it also fits my hand like a glove. Where it may be a tad to big in average size hands. If you love 45acp and want a full-size gun, I highly recommend this beast.

Colion, you're assessment of the G-21 as an ideal home defense weapon is thorough and informative. I would like to add that in recent videos of MARSOC, the sidearm their deploying with appears to be the 1911. Once again, it seems elements of our militarys special operations are relying on America's caliber, the venerable 45acp. You're in good company.

I own several firearms including a blue label Gen 4 Glock 21 with Glock night sights. I have it paired with Underwood Xtreme Defender +P ammo. The primary wound channel from those rounds is larger than any fully expanded hollow points in the same caliber. The solid copper projectile is barrier blind but does not over penetrate. Because it is a solid copper round, it is a lighter projectile that has less recoil but much greater velocity of around 1,400 ft/s to 1,450 ft/s. I use that ammo in every handgun that I own but in a .45 ACP, it is unreal. I love that gun and I love that ammo!

  • @johncarewjr

Great video and information! Partly due to this video, I chose the Glock 21 Gen 4 for home defense, with a TLR-6 light/laser combo. For a pistol, the stopping power of the 45 is hard to beat and the 13 rounds of the G21 is the icing on the cake. Added to that, it has a rail for a light/laser, because you should not blindly shoot at noises in the dark. You need to identify your target. I prefer pistol over a shotgun, because I have a young one and I figure, worst case, I can aim high and I'm not worried about hitting the kid if she happens to be behind the target.

My first .45 ACP was a Colt Government Model, Series 70 (and I still have it), but I recently picked up a G21SF to compare the younger generation to the older generation. Both would put a major hurt on an unwelcome visitor with a Mozambique response. Former Marine here. Nice video. Carried the 1911 and the Beretta 9mm on duty. I always liked the stopping power of the. 45 so I purchased the gen2 21 in 1994. I was 22 at the time. A couple mos later I purchased my dessert eagle .44 mag. I still keep these two trusty guns at my bedside for home defense. I've never upgraded either of the two as I mastered both at a young age and have always been blessed with a talent for accuracy. Now I'm going to make some mods to soften the kick on my gen2 21 because that's always been the issue with that piece. I may sell it for a gen4 but dang thing has sentimental value. The older I get the more I cling, I guess. Semper fi

It has been upgraded by the factory to correct feeding issues, and their service dept. is second to none in my opinion. I use Corbon 230 gr JHP as well as Remington 230 gr JHP as defense rounds. I was a police officer in Atlanta for 8 years and my department used the Glock 21sf as our primary service weapon, which is probably the best handgun you can use as a law enforcement officer. Very nice review, good points and well put together.I tend to reccomend the Gloock 17/19 to newer defensive shooters mainly due to to cheaper ammo. Thought being typical person will spend about the same amount of money on ammo regardless of caliber, thus with the 9mm they will tend to fire and train about twice as much as they would with the 45 (as 9mm's roughly half the cost of 45's). Could be faulty logic on my part though ;)
Still you make an excellent case for the G21.

I recently bought a used (never been fire) gen4 21 for 350.00 . It did take me about 700 rounds to learn how to shoot it . Once I figured it out I found it to be very accurate. Now I have well over 2,000 rounds through it, not one malfunction of any kind .
This pistol eats anything, cheap ammo, defense rounds and hardball.
    This is an awesome pistol.
As for home defense it would serve as a backup to a shotgun.

I was trained by Col. Jeff Cooper back in the 70s. As you probably know, the Col. developed the "Modern Technique" for defensive handgun use. The 1911 in 45 acp turned out to be the best gun/caliber to meet the DVC balance, Accuracy (combat), Power (high probabilty of a one shot stop), Speed (how fast can you get the it into operation and controlled follow on shots). The Glock 21 did not exist at the time of his research but I do believe the Glock 21 is a worthy successor to the 1911 and I have made the transition myself. I use a 21 for home defense and feel quite well armed to handle most any situation where a handgun is called for.

Never met Col. Cooper but have read much of what he wrote about the 1911, 45 ACP & self defense. I've taken these lessons to heart (try to, anyway).
Fired the 1911 in basic training & was hooked but didn't buy my first handgun until 15 years after I was discharged, which turned out be a 1911. Shot & carried it everyday since so a 1911 function is second nature to me.
Heard mixed stories about Glocks, not sure I ever wanted to own one. Had a chance to shoot a G17 some years back. I like the simplicity of a Glock but I'm not a 9MM fan. Bought my own G21 this past summer & have since put about 700 rounds downrange with it. It's a good shooter & even loaded, it's still lighter than a 5" 1911.
But a Glock trigger sucks. Not nearly as crisp & clean as a 1911 trigger.
I will always carry a 1911 for self defense outside my home, but the G21 has become my HD gun. I like the idea of extra capacity without having to fumble for extra mags, not to mention having a rail mounted light. I keep it right next to my 12ga coach.

Thanks for the reply email. I have been a dedicated 1911 person since the 1970s however, in 2010 I decided to expand my horizons a bit and purchased a Springfield XD45 Compact. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the gun shot as well as how comfortable it was in my hand. My future wife (now my wife) had a Glock 23 as a result of her last husbands death. Being from New York City origionally she had no interest in guns so I traded her some tires, a stom door, etc for the G23. I also have very large hands and the G23 frame was just too small for me as well as being chambered in 40 cal so I traded it for a G21. When I first shot it,I had exactly the same reaction to the trigger as you but it only took a dozen rounds or so to re-adjust my finger position on the trigger to compensate. Since Col. Cooper drilled his students on the importance of the front sight, I found that concentrating on it made the trigger shortcomings just go away. I had also found that shooting under heavy stress, I really don't hear much, feel nothing, and have to continually fight tunnel vision. I think I could bend a piece of 1/2" rebar with my trigger finger under that kind of stress so the G21 trigger pull is nothing. Now I find the G21 to be a joy to shoot and it has become my home defense gun and I too have a streamlight attached to the equipment rail. Because of it's size it is not my daily carry. I found the XD-s in 45acp to be perfect for me for concealment and comfort. It has replaced my Commander for this role.
Best wishes and enjoy the holidays.

Easy, Glock G20... All this talking about calibers and HD/SD capability no mention of 10mm Auto??? The G21's best feature is the ability to run a 10mm (and litteraly every other caliber Glocks come in for that matter) conversion first and as a .45ACP second. There's an AR close at hand in my house, but the 10mm G20/TLR-3 is a cream-puff to shoot and a monster waiting to be let off the leash.

I agree with you on your choice of the Glock 21. I have a Glock 23 for carry, but for home, I want something a little more substantial. I do have a .44 mag., but that is a bit much. I prefer a .45 a.c.p. and, or a 12 ga. shotgun. 00 buck sounds macho, but have you ever seen what number 7 shot does across the room? Even across the yard. What ever you have, practice with it. Practice a LOT!

I strongly agree I carry a Glock 30s as my daily carry however, for home defense and nightstand gun you can't go wrong with the Glock 21. It may not be perfect for an individual with smaller hands but give it a try before ruling it out for home defense. From a cost factor and round capacity of 13+1 you can't go wrong also you have many options to tune and customize your Glock 21 to make it the perfect tool for protecting your home and loved ones. Nice job on the review!

Late to the party. Sorry. Before the CV shutdown, I owned a .45 from Ruger that I loved. It blew up in my hand (fortunately no damage to said hand). I was (before this CV stuff) going to attend a fire-arms course with the .45 as my back-up weapon. When it blew up, (after realizing that I still have all of my digits, face, and such) I realized that I still needed a .45...At my local gun shop, I held a Glock 21 and a Springfield XDS. In case you don't know, the Springfield XDS is a concealable weapon. The Glock 21 is a full frame weapon. I chose the XDS. I'm going to go back and buy the Glock 21 Gen 4. The XDS is a fine fire-arm, but after shooting it and comparing the trigger to my Gen 1 Glock 17...I'm becoming a Glock enthusiast (sweet trigger action). I just hope my gun shop still has that 21 gen 4.

Why do you think our troops are asking for the old 1911s to replace their issued 9 millimeters? The 9mm just doesn't have the stopping power that the big .45 does in combat!

Exterminence Hey, imagine that, so am I. 39 months in Iraq, as an MP, with an M9 among other weapons. How many times did I use my M9? Not once. No need. I carried an M4/M203 and had all sorts of other weapons in and on the trucks. Do they get used? Yeah, sometimes. But the hardware is not as important as the software (The shooter). I could go into a big long rant about how I'm a pistol instructor with the MP school and how I see hundreds of drill sergeants come through every year telling their privates dumb shit that doesn't work as well as the stuff we teach them, and that no matter what gun you give a soldier, that soldier is typically not well-trained enough to use it to its maximum effectiveness and therefore the opinions of soldiers on what makes a good pistol is largely irrelevant, but I won't say all that, because it'd just turn into a short-arm inspection.

Good job with the vast amount of combat experience you have with the M9. I don't give a shit what war you were or weren't in, or when you served or didn't serve. I respect anyone who puts on the uniform and consider them my brothers and sisters, even to the point that my son calls my buddies aunt and uncle when they come over. Being in the military doesn't automatically grant someone knowledge on the subject at hand. I would defer to your wisdom if we were talking about patriots or avengers. For the M9, I'll take my 14 years as an MP carrying and shooting them, three years as a pistol instructor using the M9 in all weather conditions, and the fact that I've owned one for over ten years now.

This was back in the days when you could get a 100 round Winchester value pack of 9mm for 11.34 at Wal-Mart. I"m sure I had malfunctions in that time, but the only two I remember were when I fired Simmunitions rounds through it without an adapter kit. I have a Glock 41 and that is the softest-shooting .45 I have ever fired. My main purpose for the 43 was hiking and kayaking the first shot I use rat shot in most areas for copperhead snakes and if your in the ocean it is great for bullhead sharks. I hope to never need it for self defense . However keep shooting and hopefully we will add to our gun collection, I keep looking at a 17L I sold my 24 years ago wish I still had it.

TEN YEARS LATER - The Glock21 is my only Glock and it is indeed my nightstand handgun and I too am a 45 guy with four of America's Caliber in my arsenal. Love Your Stuff, Sir!!!

I have a FN FNX .45 ACP which holds 15 in the magazine for home defense! It's by my bedside on my dresser in the holster ready to go in case of a home invasion. I love it and feel extremely confident with it being my self defense weapon. But, I'm picking up a FNS 40 "compact" for my CCW.

Have you had any issues/gripes/complaints about the FNX 45 Tac?

Brandon McKinley I don't have the FNX 45 Tactical but I haven't heard anything negative about it so far.

militantx0660 i had owned a fns 9mm twice. ok gun. grip are to bulky with all the large dots and shit on it, trigger is average. sights were terrible, trust me ive owned just about every brand on the market once or twice each. its an ok pistol but if shtf and i have better options i would leave the FNH behind. go with a glock 26 if you want carry. glock also has subcompact everything, and fuck what people say about glock. they are so well made and smooth it is engineering perfection, glock is king in the market for a reason. sights, trigger(so nice), ergo, looks, slim. any caliber you want. other options i would say look at sr9c if you wanna a cheap but realitvly reliable piece. the best of all would be a glock 26 but.. sig sauers have good SC's. berrreta nano and m&p shield, an okay way to go. check those out before fns compact. your choice at the end. but thats my opinion. im a good shot too.

RedNosePitbullMT Here is what I love about guns...the "best" handgun is the one that YOU like regardless of what others say. I own the HK VP9 and I absolutely love it! I also have the HK 45 compact for my conceal and carry weapon and will be picking up the HK 45 next. Yep! You guessed it! Just like YOU like the Glock....I like the Heckler & Koch. And, I doubt that a bad guy trying to attack you or me on the streets or in our homes would be overly concerned with whether he was shot by my HK or your Glock. The key is....he got shot! Lol! All of this...this gun is better than that gun talk is pure trash, useless and a waste of breathe. Shoot what you like!

Since I live in New Jersey, handguns are becoming increasingly more difficult to obtain so I wanted to make sure I get the perfect one and I think you just sold me on this one. Thanks for the great info.

Just bought 2 used police G21’s. Pick them up this week and am confident they will be in great shape but if not, they are cheap and easy to fix

My gen4 Glock 21 is my do it all gun. It serves for home defense at night, it serves as my conceal Cary every day (yes I do carry this beast IWB everyday) it also serves as my deer hunting pistol as long as I keep shots under 20 yards. Love the 21, I have had almost every glock and it is by far my favorite.
