- in today's Bali Sanur video vlog I share some very sad news that 12 beachfront businesses at the Duyung beach location in Sanur have permanently closed.
VIDEO CONTENT: Sanur Bali 12 businesses permanently closed
Absolutely ridiculous!!!!! Bali doesn't need another resort hotel, it needs to listen to what tourists and ex-pats want. As mentioned, the restaurants concerned were filled daily with patrons enjoying themselves. We are steadily losing the things that attracts us to Bali. Don't complain when nobody stays at your new, fancy resort..... because they choose another country for their holiday destination, as all of the places they love are one by one disappearing.
Agree 💯%
unfortunately the tourist demographic is changing for Bali. The number one is still Australia but I think in the next year it will be India. China and Singapore also bringing in then solid numbers...and sadly these tourists dont seem to be interested in Balinese businesses or accommodations/eateries - they want clinical, fully serviced package tourism - as we see in many european holiday destinations which were taken over by the Brits and Germans in Spain, Greece etc.
We will sadly see more malls, more hotel complexes, more chains and less personality commercially. And the government doesnt care, the bigger companies pay more tax, are easier admin...
sad...but its happening allover Bali right now
Totally agree...@@nisnga147
Unfortunately, overdevelopment will kill off the ambience and hence the main reason people go to Bali, in this case, Sanur.
Very well said. The fact Sanur is largely low-rise and reltively quiet is a huge attraction. Further development will be a big turnoff.
Hello Gary. I’ve been binge watching your channel lately to plan for our vacation next month. Your videos convinced me and my partner to choose Sanur for our week-long stay. This massive change irritates us as these places were among the top reasons why we chose Sanur. I understand that these landowners will always choose the bigger profit, but this is starting to get out of hand. It seems like they want to turn all districts into either Canggu or Nusa Dua. They can’t keep thinking ALL tourists want the noisy loud music instagram-able beach clubs and cafes . Nor 1000+ dollars per night hotel rooms. A lot of us are from middle class, work our asses off 9-6 and get a couple of weeks of vacation a year if we’re lucky. Do they think the middle class tourists would want to spend 500+ a night on rooms and listen to headache inducing music at lunch? In an ideal situation there would be an association to protect and speak on behalf of these independent businesses to the investors. But as an Indonesian myself I just know you can always buy the law with the right amount of money. In the end, money wins. I guess we can start looking at the other islands for our next holiday.
Ke Lombok aja kak, bisa juga Sumbawa, NTT.. bener2 masih asli murni. Kalo nyari pantai Indonesia Timur g ada lawan.
@@ranidenkaa2656kayaknya next mau milih lombok kak, dulu pernah kesana sekali makanannya enak semua jadi pingin lagi 😋
Would be interesting to know the name of the resort chain.Which I will never support again. Not that I would ever support or stay at hotel chains This is so destructive.
I will always support small businesses.
I seen a lot of faded, mouldy and generally run down businesses. Replaced with something new might not be a bad idea. If the businesses relocate, I hope they get everything new and thrive.
@@garrysmith4454 They were nothing like that when they were operating. Very clean and nice.
Those are my favorite places in Sanur and it’s gone now. So sad.
@@me16-bh4om yes a very sad day
Gary why are i guess the government so hell bent on ruining what we love about Bali and why we go to places like Sanur . Is so sad, those poor people and there businesses.
I won't be going to another resort. I love going to the local places meeting the local people.😢😢
So much for my visit in March😢😢
@@ChatSafetybigger places is more tax which = more $
@@balibygary9718 Someone is recieving a donation, it happens where i live in Oz
@balibygary9718 true Gary but I think it could back fire, .
Good people from around the world and the locals which have made Sanur what it is might leave, then they will get the type of tourist they don't want .
Just look at Canggu.
@@ChatSafety something is working in canggu to atrract so many tourists so I guess they are using that as a guide for the way to move forward with the future development for Bali. People now seem to want nicer accommodation, better quality food nice beach clubs and it seems like they don't mind to pay more to get what they want. You will see big changes to Bali in the coming years they are even talking about an underground metro being built
Heartbreaking for all them staff now without jobs! I hope they all find new locations to keep the businesses going… thank you for your video to alert us of the situation! Very sad
So sad. I’ll be giving Sanur a miss from now on - used to be my fave 😢
@Cori-P there's a place called Warung Amphibia and other nice local Warungs along Sindhu Beach , these are nice local places. I hope the same thing does not happen to them, as the are 5 min from icon mall.
Stupid, stupid move! Pantai & Coco’s were my favourite Warungs along with Nest Spa. Sanur does not need another massive resort closing off access to beachfront! The reason people choose Sanur is because it IS NOT Canggu! Let’s hope they leave Northern Bali alone
@@janettemitchell6864 it's very sad news for Sanur
This is awful news. They are ruining the area. There is enough resorts. Or transform the old resorts. This beachfront will be so boring like Nusa Dua if they keep going. Agree with you Gary, some of our favs too.
Even though it is sad, they knew for years that they will be closed. Don't blame the developers, but blame the local government and Banjar, who sell .. Euh.. already sold Sanur's soul. I lived there for plus 20yrs, and saw this all coming, and moved out a bit more east of Sanur. Interesting is what will happen with the big plot next to Santrian, which is absolute prime, and is for sale at $75million. And especially what will happen with Mertasari within 10 yrs..
I was told this was happening a couple of weeks ago and I was so sad for the businesses and staff. I’m upset for myself too as they were the loveliest collection of restaurants and my favourite spa The Nest. We stay close by to be able to enjoy them and this takes the shine off the area for us. We avoid Nusa Dua as we are not interested in resort after resort in the beachfront. We loved Sanur as it was so different from the busier tourist areas. It’s changing, and not for the better unfortunately 😢
After 25 years going to Sanur this is surely the nail in the coffin, so many changes chasing the big $$ the best little strip of Sanur gone !so many people now out of work , must have got in before the moratorium on new hotels , sad day for Sanur
Awesome 👍- have you thought about beaches on Bintan island (Close to Singapore) with clean and white sand ?😇 not so many tourists go there though but it is awesome
Definitely a sad loss for this iconic part of Sanur. I spend 2 months every year just down the lane at Asoka Homestay, just to be close to this group of restaurants and cafes (will be February and March this year so only in a few weeks, looking forward to catching up with you again). As I passed the large vacant land behind these places I often wondered why nothings been built … well now we know … that’s progress for you! I always knew these places didn’t have a future, anyone developing the land behind them would want the beach frontage as well but I will miss them all, having eaten there regularly for years. See you in a few weeks … but sadly, not at Cocos or Lilla Pantai!
I was really looking forward to Lilla Pantai and Coco Bistro 😭
The romatic cafe lilla pantai....so sad😢
You're right. End of an era. And an end of an era for my visits to Sanur. I liked Sanur because of the beach front restaurants and the vibe - resort and beach clubs is not where I like to spend my time. Farewell Sanur - your were awesome until they ruined it.
Yes so sad. My family and friends have been enjoying all these wonderful places since 2015. 😢
Thanks for showing this footage Gary. We knew that this was coming, at least 18 months ago. These businesses have not closed because of the Icon, the restaurants were all on rented properties and they have known the development was coming. What I’d like to know is if any of the restaurants are reopening around Sanur.
@@SnL-2012 i have heard that Lilla Pantai is moving to the semawang beach area i will show the new location in tonights video
@ thank you, I’m looking forward to seeing your new video. 😊
The beachfront restaurants were the magic of SANUR . How did this happen
So sad that quiet Sanur which we love has to become resorts 😢
I’m devastated these were also my favourite restaurants in sanur very sad day for all the employees and sanur it makes me so mad when great places are destroyed for big resorts 😢😢😢
Very sad. Sanur is slowly being ruined.
This was our absolute favourite area ! So sad. It’s what made Sanur unique 😢
its bc of icon mall many of those smallshops have closed very sad all big buisiness killing everything the same thing is happening in sydney
Gary will the beach path remain open during construction?
@@JohnSmith-cu1jo yes i think si they will put fencing up th hide the site
One of my favourite places to the right at the end of Jalan Cemara closed down during covid. Was such a great place for a beer and lunch with awesome staff, I really miss it.
Bloody Icon monstrosity! What we feared would happen, happened😱
Don't blame the icon, blame the customers.. When I travel I avoid places like that and stick to local shops/eateries etc
Oh ...gee ..so sad !! Really has taken the shine , off of strolling along the path ...hopefully all staff were able to find other employment ....
Makes you wonder , with The Icon and now this .. what's Sanur going to be like in the future 🤷♀️
So Gary.. you know the area.. if we're staying at that end of sanur, where do we visit now for best meals? And are the places to stay on jl duyung going to be too noisy with development?
@@cathydearnley6632 still many good beachfront restaurants La playa cafe, Seagrass by the beach, Lemo beach cafe, soul on the beach, kayumanis seaside sanur, Moreno, Tapha sanur, costa by monsta, stuja di pantai, pier eight, byrd house, nalayan sanur, there are many new fabulous restaurants at icon Bali on the beach and inside the mall
The soul of Bali is in the hands of big ressort contractors, so sad
Just unbelievable and so so sad.
Just awful … everyone loved Sanur that’s why they think they need more expensive hotels and shopping centres .. but Sanur lovers will now move to somewhere quiet , it will be too expensive to visit there ! It will lose its charm what a shame
Oh my god this is so sad
We are staying at parigata soon
So only 3 restaurants still open
I can’t quite catch the names of them
Greed is horrible
Shame on the big brand new resort I would never stay there

@ thank you so much. We booked our accommodation from watching your video 12 months ago
@Tr3vnTrac3inOz this has being talked about for many years I was never sure if it would happen or not as many things get talked about and never happen in Bali. Nothing sad at all with this. Old crap places will turn into something new and beautiful. Just retired people in Sanur who can’t take any changes complaining. The guy who owns the land is free to do what he want with it.
You can mix Greed in there somewhere for sure.😎
Gutting really! Been coming to Sanur for decades now, from travelling here from the UK & then settling and moving to Australia and remembering Sanur was a great place for families & brought our family of 5 now to these restaurants for a few years now & devastated to see them go. We are here in Sanur now & just went past and it's so sad. Spoke to the Lila Pantai guy and they are relocating a bit further south on the beach so good news there but so sad to see this all go!
I have been going to Sanur for 40 years, and I am so, so disappointed with this news. Another big hotel taking over the beachfront.
This has been my favourite restaurant area on the beach... Lilla Pantai, Oomba, Coco and Izakaya.
Lombok is beginning to look more appealing.
I would not want to stay at the Hyatt Regency in the near future..
Perhaps the restaurants and shops at the new ICON shopping center, with very large underground carpark absolutely full with hundreds of cars. Restaurants full . ??? Big business destroying local Bali businesses. 😭not coming back again
Absolutely heart-breaking, all because some rich tossers want to build yet another wanky beachfront hotel. Some of my favourite beachfront restaurants were within this stretch, now closed forever. I just hope all those businesses affected either have found somewhere else to trade from, or them and their employees are taken care of somehow. Noticed one is moving to Kuta - that has got to suck given how far away it is :(
@@mrdevil01 coco bistro has being open in kuta square for a while now. Lilla pantai has already found a new location still on the beach
@@balibygary9718, absolutely devastated by your latest video re the closures. We are due to arrive in Sanur in 3 weeks and so sad about what has happened.
Feel so sorry for everyone who has lost their jobs and businesses.
Villa Pantai was our favourite restaurant to go.
Any ideas where they are or have relocated too.. ? 🙏
@@poepatpatpoe1361 i think Lilla Pantai will be at Semawang beach

Oh no absolute awful news just what we need another huge unaffordable hotel! :(
Do you think this will affect the parigata villas resort?

Very sad, Gary you have the most sincere heart. Take care😢
So it was true afterall. This is a sad loss for Sanur
so nice
Very sad. I love Sanur because of those restaurants along the beach
This is very sad. Coco Bistro was one of my favourites, I was only just there in November. 😢
Sedih, sedih bangat. 😫
It's so sad, Oomba is my favorite place in Sanur. I'm just shocked to hear about it. Because it's the only place that I think I can enjoy Sanur :(
Looks like my last Sanur visit in a few weeks time with my favorite restaurants gone.
Why there place coffee ,.. close ?
Well this just sucks. I just found out about Sanur a week or two ago and it seems that it has been blown up before I could visit. 😢
Does anyone know when it will be starting. Thinking I should cancel my stay in February at parigata soon
Also interested to know staying in May
They destroy all beaches also the beaches from kuta till canggu
😢
Thats sad the small shops were inviting
Will not be the same sadly
So tragic, iconic local restaurants and businesses that are part of the attraction to Sanur closed for yet another expensive hotel that is changing the charm of visiting the slower paced Sanur. I know change is normal but leave Sanur alone and let yuppies and instagram set stay elsewhere
That's so sad
@@TeeVibes52 yes sad but let's see what is next for Sanur
Gary - in Lembok the beach restaurant owners don't pay anything to the government for rent, if it's on government land - risk being, they're could be moved on anytime. Great to know what they earn is all theirs. Is it the same in Sanur/Bali ?
Just so sad!
😢😢😢,..
Land prices are squeezing out any minor businesses along beachfront. The huge ICON mall will also kill off smaller restaurants. A lively beachfront will be replaced by cold corporate businesses. That is how the Balinese and Javanese big wigs want it.
Oh no.... Coco Bistro is my favourite restaurant.
Why are they ruining Sanur with new construction? It's always been my happy place. Maybe not now 😢
Very sad.
So my last visit to Lila Pantai Sanur was actually my last one 😢 These resorts owners are too greedy. And later they will limit the walking spot
Bugger, going to sanur in March, the beachfront might be a bit crap now
Same here, we are there for a week in April.
The greed is truly something else there! Selling themselves out! Just for what? Money 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ Probably more Russian developers! They’ve taken over there building compounds/ resorts/basically their own cities within Bali! It’s changing, losing its charm, culture and becoming just like every other tourist destination!😏💔 Sadly the love of money has ruined it!
I don't like all thos Ritch Russians buying upp everything..
@ yup! They have zero respect for anyone. So rude, so arrogant!

This is due to ex President Megawati Sukarno Putris daughter. She is the owner of the land behind and the land where the restaurants are. You don't need to be smart to know where she got her money from. Corruptly.
We were there pre new year at Bamboo and found out from staff about it..
The resort being built will supposedly have a beach club.
The whole shut down was enforced by the govt.
It's an absolute disgrace what has happened and typical of Bali process.
Supposedly she insisted the restaurants were to be removed. Indonesians I spoke to hate her and the lavish lifestyle she lives off the back of her corrupt mother.

Sad!
Soon all of Bali will be a Chinese owned highrise. You'll only be able to see the beach with a pair of binoculars from the skybar. 800,000 binoculars rental fee of course.
And what about Russian investors, who don't care about culture?
@benstaal5129 the Russians are busy buying up southern Thailand.
@@benstaal5129yes the Russians are worst..
I don't understand all the negative comments.
Why keep all the small restaurants and warungs?
It's much better with big resorts where you don't have to talk to the locals.
Also, when you look at the beach in Sanur, they could easily build a big shopping mall or two. And a parking lot.
What a stupid comment!
