Thank you so so much for repairing my train. I realised how many problems there were as soon as I watched your video and had an endless grin on my face watching it going around your track. I am excited to receive my train and watch it going around my circuit - Tim 😀😀😀😀
Good on you Bill! You went the extra mile to make sure it's going to perform for years to come. We all need to do everything we can to assist and encourage the younger folks with interest in the hobby.
I have one of these Loco's. It hasn't moved a wheel since 1976 and has been moved from box to box and house to house ever since. But this year I have a cunning plan! The 37 was always my favourite loco and it would have been the first choice to run again. Having seen this thorough strip down and reconstruction, I'm not so apprehensive if, as I expect, it refuses to splutter back to life! Thank you OOBill! The prospect of taking everything apart to get the beast running again is not longer as daunting as it once was! 👍
Hi Bill, enjoyed this service on this model,I have just reconstructed one from a box of bits. I found it easier to drop the wheels out and fitting the brushes from underneath, much easier than trying to hold it all together!! After a good service and greasing it now runs lively and not too loud. Keep the good work up, thanks for your videos, I can't wait to see them. Pete( a young 77!)
Great to help a youngster out and keep his interest in the hobby going. Watching this channel has made me realise I always ran my Hornby type 2 diesel in reverse in the 1970s, I assumed the motor should be at the front 😄
Loverly to see you getting this loco up and running for Tim. All looks very familiar as have just completed a strip down and rebuild on my very old green Triang class 37. A very treasured loco of mine as I can remember going to the local model shop with my father to buy her so important to me she still runs. I am still modelling and 65 in a couple of week so hope another Triang R751 does the same for Tim!
Very well done Bill, a thorough service for young Tim’s locomotive……..and from his own post, clearly he’s delighted. I absolutely love watching your videos and the organised and methodical way you go about your repairs. Always a very clear explanation and excellent outcomes…..many thanks.
Great repair. Amazing actually! As an aside running improvement modern controllers give these old locos is astonishing considered how they used to be with old fashioned controllers. This was a huge revelation for me when I finally splashed out on a top end DC controller.
Another great video; renewed life in the class 37. Step by step; always great to watch and listen to. Another few more years of joy in this model. All best to you Bill and thankyou again. Marc from Leighton Buzzard
Thank you OO Bill for yet another entertaining and instructive video - I've got a 1970s Hornby Hymek and DMU, both of which use the same motors as in your video - I may have a go at rebuilding them now I've seen how you tackled that one. A great result.
I've 3d printed replacement traction magnets for old class 31 with the same motor. Seems to run better and doesn't pick up metal bits anymore to cause shorts.
A well deserved Revival for this old Classic, with Awesome Results. Old Growlers don’t Die, they are an Enigma with the Capabilities of Carrying on Forever 😁 Cheers Bill 🔥🙌🏻
Sounds like my 8H22 is slightly older than yours, as it has no rear bogie pickups & plastic wheels (it's an original Triang version). My class 31 has an identical motor, but 1 power bogie has a split base keeper plate, so until I can find a replacement I have to keep swapping the bogies, depending on which loco I wish to run. It's great to see these old girls repaired & running again.
Blimey, your diesel is expensive! I am very impressed by your work on improving the smoothness and quiteness. taht is very skilled and a great lesson for us.
Great video and great fix! Layout getting better and better; I wonder where the golf course is going, and when the price of petrol is coming down. You frequently use the ammeter in the repair process, and as Track pins seem to be a common cause of disaster, do you recheck the current drawn after their removal? The ammeter seems to be a valuable tool.
That black puller you used is obviously popular - I had to do quite a bit of searching to even find out what its was. Appears to be MODEL CRAFT - Gear & Pinion Press & Puller MCPTK4000 and it is sold out on many sites.
Excellent helpful video! Do the green & black wires solder together in the same spot? Mine have been disconnected for over 30 years and I can't remember where they solder - I thought the green wire was on the right and the black on the left, but my 37 still doesn't work! Everything else appears ok
My first loco was this. Sadly mine is just a dummy loco now as mine suffered the same as this and i could not fix it, requiring new bearings and gear puller etc.
i watched this a few days ago and managed to get mine going but needs new plastic bearings any idea where i can get these and what did you use to clean these items thanks i do not know if you answer these comments or how to get in touch with you to get the information i require again thanks
well done matey - can i ask a question? i was a big lima fan with many of their locos - then, by accident, i got a brit outline backmann, the crab loco and then later an a9 - i just couldn't believed how much better the backmann locos ran.
youtube.com/@oobill - Hi. I have this very loco and it runs nicely on DC - is it possible to convert it to DCC? and if so, how difficult is it to do..? Cheers…!

No problem Tim it will be back with you soon.
Now that's a satisfied customer
You are a true Hero OOBill. You will I am sure always be remembered by many, hope you realise what this does for the next generations.
Good on you Bill! You went the extra mile to make sure it's going to perform for years to come.

That's Brilliant, Bill.. you went the extra mile with the bearings to ensure the wee boy has a perfect locomotive. Kudos to you for that sir !
Amazing how that motor has the throbbing sound of so many prototypical British diesel locos!

A very comprehensive strip down and repair, well done Bill 👏👏
Great to help a youngster out and keep his interest in the hobby going. Watching this channel has made me realise I always ran my Hornby type 2 diesel in reverse in the 1970s, I assumed the motor should be at the front 😄
It tends to run better with the motor at the back when pulling a load. Otherwise it doesn't matter.
Well done bill you went all out to make sure the young lad received back a minter 👍

Great job bill 👏 the loco runs well . And reading the chat the young lad is very grateful to you for repairing it .Well done bill 👌
Excellent job there, that lad will be well happy that now works, 👏👏👏

Another one brought back from the brink well done Bill
Brilliant Bill, I'm having trouble putting mine back together, so this video might help. Thank you.
Another great video; renewed life in the class 37. Step by step; always great to watch and listen to. Another few more years of joy in this model. All best to you Bill and thankyou again. Marc from Leighton Buzzard
Great job Bill, that will be one very happy 10 year old
The hobby needs all the new young enthusiasts it can get and I hope your excellent work has helped make that happen. 👍

I have done exactly the same and agree they run a lot better with the magnets replaced. The magnets are useless anyway on non steel track.

Good work Bill.
Another happy customer 👍
Another great repair I have a couple of old 37's which one day I hope to put pick ups on the front bogie

Your modelling skills are first rate.

Great repair, before you took out the motor I said to myself Track pin, I always think that power bogie was not hornby's best .
hi Bill, another job well done. a great power bogie when set up correct.
I agree initially a master at work

Love a 37! Nice one Bill!
thanks for this, now where are my 37s.
My first loco was this. Sadly mine is just a dummy loco now as mine suffered the same as this and i could not fix it, requiring new bearings and gear puller etc.
Quick question. What do you use in your ultrasonic cleaner? Isopropyl alcohol or some other type of cleaning solution?
How about putting the armature in the drill to clean it with wet and dry paper
I hate working on those motors , very fiddly. XO4 anyday for me or the old hornby dublo motors , buillet proof. Nice one Bill .
