I knew my father was brilliant and compassionate but at age fourteen and in the throes of losing the first girlfriend, even I dared not ask in 1968 whether a fourteen-year-old heart could physically "break." It turns out that there is a kind of heart attack that presents just that way, no other symptoms present, no history, just a deep and prolonged feeling of love lost in the recent history.
