  • More than forty years of Steeler frustration melted away in the final seconds of Super Bowl IX. For years, they had laid the foundation for this moment. Yes, some of the pieces were in place going into the 1974 season.
But look at the draft. There has been no draft in the history of the NFL, by any team in any year, that was better than the Steelers' draft of 1974.
Lynn Swann (1), Jack Lambert (2), John Stallworth (4) and Mike Webster (5) (plus undrafted free agent Donnie Shell), were each taken by the Steelers in the '74 draft... and each now resides forever in Canton. A staggering 17 rookies made the team in 1974, and amazingly, the team went on to win the Super Bowl. With the veterans sitting out training camp due to the NFL Players' strike, Chuck Noll was able to pay special attention to his prize crop of rookies. And the rest, as they say, is history.

I'm a Browns fan and the '74 Steelers draft will never be duplicated. I ❤ the narration of Jeff Kaye.

Agreed, Jeff Kaye was always my favorite voice of the NFL.

The story behind Stallworth was they "lost" the film on him when other teams asked about it. Bill Nunn was fantastic with finding talent in the small schools.

They literally got 5 hall of famers in this draft when you include undrafted free agents.

I am a Cowboys fan to the bone all my life. But l tell you this, as much as l hated the Steelers in the 70s, they were some bad mofos. You gotta respect. Swann and Stallworth in the top 10 favorite wide receivers of all time.

I am 53 and these guys were my heroes growing up. Today I wouldn’t piss on the NFL to put it out if it were on fire

That’s abs absurd, four Hall of Famers in one class. Then on top of that the class they had with Bradshaw and Blount which also included a burner who made the Pro Bowl in Ron Shanklin. Unbelievable

Would enjoy seeing the complete 1974 playoff game against the Bills where the Steel Curtain squeezes the pulp out of "The Juice".

That's is at the top of my list of missing games I'd like to see. Even higher for me than the Immaculate Reception game. I do have a radio broadcast of it on cassette tape somewhere.

Thanks again. I agree with you. The "Immaculate Reception" game came down to the last 22 seconds, but during the 1974 playoff game against Buffalo, the Steelers defense held the NFL's four-time leading rusher, O.J. Simpson, to just 49 yards for the entire game.

Great memories of my youth when the Steelers were kings of the NFL. There was one league for the the Steelers and another for everyone else that played pro football. Does your site still have full games, or do you have dvds available for sale?
