    Fun Fact: After the 1974 draft concluded, the Steelers signed an undrafted safety by the name of Donnie Shell, the same Donnie Shell who was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year! Making that FIVE ROOKIES the Steelers signed during the 1974 offseason that went on to become Hall of Famers. Bill Nunn was a god-level scout.

I attended AL with his son Mike and my close friend was his backup QB. When I asked Coach how Mike was doing he literally opened up to me for the next hour. He was so genuine and seemed really glad I wasn’t there to bother him but actually related to him. RIP coach.

    While the Steelers' 74 draft was unreal, it's also unreal that in Chuck Noll's six drafts from 69 to 74, only ONE of them - 1973 - failed to produce a Hall of Fame player. They got Joe Greene in 69, Terry Bradshaw and Mel Blount in 70, Jack Ham in 71 and Franco Harris in 72, in addition to Swann, Stallworth, Lambert and Webster (plus undrafted Donnie Shell) in 74. That 1974 roster had ten future Hall of Famers out of 48 players.

  • @NightmareGPG58tREX
    @NightmareGPG58tREX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Six player's from the 1974 draft class have been enshrined in the NFL HOF, Raiders drafted Casper... Steelers drafted Swann and Lambert and Stallworth and Webster with Shell an (UDFA). These five men went on to help the club win it's first ever Super Bowl plus three more in five year's... No Super Bowl Era team better than the Steelers and the 1976 team was better than the other four year's, no RB's very hard to win. Other Defenses may be better in a single year or Super Bowl, but none of them had the sustainable level of excellence with higher quality of more year's than the 70's Steelers... the HOF committee still is committed to keep L.C. Greenwood out and he should've been inducted a long time ago! Whatever, Steelers will always be the greatest Dynasty ever!

Best one season D however, were the '77 Falcons. With a halfway competent O, they would have probably won the Super Bowl that year. That D was that good.

    Billy Parks could have been another Biletnikoff. Was leading the NFL in receptions for the Chargers as a rookie until he broke his arm about midway through the season. One of Parks's legacies is that he was one of the first NFL hippies, his curly blond locks billowing from his helmet. Decades later, an old-school Dallas assistant coach said Parks had had hands like velcro. But the coach remembered that the Cowboys were having a military color guard present the flag & anthem during pre-game while the Vietnam War was still going on. The coach noticed tears on Parks's face. Billy said something like: How can we be doing this when people are dying over there? Decades later, the coach said something like: Now just what do you do with a guy like that?

    I did not know Pittsburgh had an internal Swann/Stallworth debate in the first round to the point they were seconds away from losing the pick. If that stalemate hadn't been broken, the Cowboys might have been the team of the 70s. I mean Staubach having Swann and Drew Pearson to throw to?? Of course you don't how different things would have gone. But if they somehow still added Dorsett a few drafts later, that offense would have been really unstoppable. Amazing how a few seconds can affect history.

    You're not telling the whole story about the #1 pick. Houston had the #1 pick the year before and selected John Matuszack and he was a massive bust, so they probably didn't want to make the same mistake twice.

    I love hearing "This draft changed how people felt about being too small etc" what bs!! Doug Flutie was treated poorly because of his height and I'm sure there are heaps of other players you've been overlooked because of their stature.

      QB is totally different. You are correct but i think he was referring to other positions.

    • @robertandrews6915
      @robertandrews6915 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are always outliers but typically a certain height weight is looked for at each position. You wouldn't select someone that is 5"8 170 lbs to play as a lineman. Qb height is important because they need to be able to see downfield over people who are well over 6 foot. You can certainly make up for being "short" in other ways but typically qbs need to be at least 6 foot.

      @@haroldmccoy6748 I understand your point. I can name several good players that are in the hall. He had well over 100 sacks, but only about 60 were recorded because the NFL didn't start recording those until 1982, which was 8 years after he was drafted. I feel having well over 100 sacks makes him great enough to be in the hall. So, after sacks were an official stat lines...from '82-'89 he averaged 8 sack per year. But, I'm going to increase to 10 because of the lost years from '74-81 which by estimates would be anywhere from a total if 120-150 sacks over a 15yr playing period, which does not include the year he sat out to box. Those are HOF numbers, unquestionably.

    A lot of people assume just because you draft a great player he will wind up in the Hall of Fame in fact many of the Steelers players would have wound up in the Hall of Fame if it was not for Chuck Noll's ability to develop them to their fullest potential much like Lombardi did in Green Bay

    The NFL Network really needs to scrutinize the information it presents its viewers. TWICE in this film I heard that the Steelers took Lynn Swann with the 20th pick, when I've known for years that it was the 21st! This is not the first such mistake I've noticed in the Network's productions since it came to being, but it is too blatantly incorrect to ignore.

    I have a hard time believing that Ed 'Too Tall' Jones really thought that he had the makings of a Professional Heavyweight Boxing Champion - the guy is herky-jerky and looks uncoordinated, even when just hitting the trainer's hand pads.
    BUT he was a phenomenal Football player.

    I remember the pundits saying that this was a mediocre draft after a rich senior crop the previous year. Swann went late in the first round because he was thought to not have outstanding speed and Lambert was a completely unpublicized player who did not make any All-American teams. The Steelers not only were shrewd drafters but knew how to develop players. The top picks in the first round were superseded by some players who were drafted in later rounds.

      Wish the Steelers could recapture this success.
      Now we get guys like Pickett and Green. Hey, at least they’re still good at drafting receivers.
