As a kid I learned pretty much the whole Clapton Unplugged songbook, including this great tune! And then over the last few years, playing with Rodney Crowell, I had the honor of meeting the great Ramblin Jack Elliott a handful of times, he would come and see us play when we were on the west coast. There are so many great versions of this tune, so much fun to play it!
You don’t cover it though. You made it yours. I like the way you do it. You made a cowboy honkytonk song out of it. I love to play this too. I first heard it in a coffee house in 1962. I used to take the train on the weekends from the suburbs to the Philadelphia center city coffee houses. That is when I discovered the delta black acoustic players that were at the ends of their lives. I just caught them and my life has been so very much enriched. I sat at the feet of people like John Hurt. A few years later When I had a drivers license I used to use my parents’ car and take Sonny Terry back to his motel because he was fighting with Brownie. What magnificent days. I became a businessman but the acoustic guitar finger style has been an armature around my cultural and spiritual life and I am grateful it found me and I found it. I had four sons. Not one is particularly moved by music. Not one is interested in playing anything. I feel sorry for them. I dreamed we would all play. C’est la vie.
Hey Joe turning 60 in a couple of weeks my life’s goal is jam out to this turns before I die I’m up to the second break is there a tab I can buy to speed up the proceeds ? Cheers thanks in advance
Wow! This is the first time I've stumbled on this great artist! That performance was nothing short of perfection. I already play this song and this has given me a ton of great ideas that I must steal and attempt to learn. Thank you!
Super picking, flat picking beaucoup d'idées intéressantes dans vos improvisations et un chant agréable... tout y est! Que de bons moments passés en votre musicale compagnie. Merci.
Dang Joe!!! You never cease to amaze me!!! Love your covers, your originals and everything you do... Appreciate your most recent guitar/chord tutorials... Keep it up and if you're ever near Chicago.... Let's set up a sweet House Concert! I got a great venue for you!!!! Best to you Man!!!!
Hi Joe, started learning this terrific version of yours. Could I ask iif you have a backing track’ running start to finish in the performance- or just during your great solo’ sections..Many thanks.
Hi there Joe, London UK wishes you well. Exquisite tone from that guitar. Sweet. Precise. Elegant. Thank you for sharing with us. Very best wishes, Les.
Joe how can you play like this ? Like your playing is so fluidic very smooth, no mistake at all. Please guide me how to play like this ? Please any suggestion
I think fluidity comes from training the hands to be really relaxed when playing, accuracy, in my case comes from playing a lot of solo fingerstyle guitar which can be quite unforgiving! And the freedom in improvising comes from knowing scales etc all over the fingerboard. Hope that answers your question! All the best with your playing, Joe
Excellent cover! But wait......no kazoo...lol. I remember Phoebe Snow covering this song and she slowed it down but you my friend killed it! Thank you for sharing!
